Phoenix Transfer Speculation 2012/13

@ RedGed: I posted this article in the Expanding the ASB Prem thread. Asking how it compared to the cost of having an ASB Prem side. Didn't get a reply tho.

http://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/article/2012/02/25/308791_news.html

It says that the Fury were give a $350k "cost neutral" target to meet to play in the youth league.

Around $350,000 for cost neutral participation is expensive....but not that expensive considering what you get out of it. The club gets a decent amount of proper games for their youth and can have their reserve players getting regular game time. IMO NZF should come up with a chunk of the $$$......they could essentially put the bulk of the NZ under 21 team into this squad...which would be fabulous for youth football in NZ. Plus they could try and hit up SPARC or others for a grants/sponsorship.

Playing in the NZpremiership would be second choice....but the season is too short. Guys like Lindsay should be playing 20 to 30 games a year. Other wise they will never develop.

The Nix are sitting on a ticking time bomb.....the age of its squad. I would imagine Ricki will not make whole sale changes to the current side next season(they have got him to 3rd this year) So when he finishes his term next season some poor bugger is going to have to come in and take over the coaching job and renew probably about 60%+ of the squad. It is absolutely critical that the club has a youth squad playing plenty of games next season.....its probably a year or two too late but better late than never.

Moss....yes please. Moss > Paston(here we go again)

I think that $350k is what it would cost the a-league and be passed on to North Queensland. It would cost us a lot more because the government subsidy wouldn't be passed on.

Is it actually (semi)professional? I thought it was but couldn't find much information on it.

I Hear a play on a yoof contract gets about 10k a year

Could be wrong though

Sounds plausible, although this would have to be supplemented with an accommodation allowance? Interestingly when looking for information I found that injury replacement players are now supposed to come from the youth team except under exceptional circumstances.

I thought Culina was looking at 2 seasons of due to a knee injury. There was talk of Jim potentially being sidelines for 3 seasons even

When the registration period opens up you can clean that up.

Phoenix players off contract at the end of the season:

Mark Paston, Chris Greenacre, Vince Lia, Dani Sanchez, Tony Warner, Daniel, Nick Ward, Niko Tsattalios, Brent Griffiths, Cameron Lindsay

On the books for 2012-2013:

Andrew Durante, Ben SigmUnd, Tony Lochhead, Jimmy Downey, Tim Brown, Leo Bertos, Lucas Pantelis, Mirjan Pavlovic, Paul Ifill, Manny Muscat.

Thought I'd repost this. Have there been any other changes besides Manny and Ifill?

Also I've been offline for a bit, any word on the Daniel situation?

Has Lochhead re-signed? I thought I read somewhere that he was also off contract. Could be wrong though.

Cameron Linday will be re-signed. Greenacre will stay whether that's in a coaching or playing capacity. I hope Mark Paston is kept as second keeper, however I wouldn't mind us picking up Scott Basalaj or Stefan Marinovic. Brent Griffiths and Niko Tsattalios will be released for Kiwi Yoof. Tony Warner will go unless he wants to be a goalkeeper coach.. Vince Lia will stay because Ricki loves him and Daniel, Nick Ward and Dani Sanchez will be released.. Alex Smith to STAY

seems like any daydreams of a finals series injury replacement for Daniel have all but faded away

Looks like the best we can hope for is Louis Fenton as mentioned above

The in-form Louis Fenton could have a field day for Wellington. A highly promising attacking player, Fenton has been training with the Phoenix, and with Brazilian Daniel out injured, could yet get a callup into Ricki Herbert's A-League squad.

...would he want to. If he plays he wont be eligable to go down  the scholarship route in the states as he'd played in a professional league.

E.g. Musa... would have been better off never playing for the nix imho.

Musa would have had to have good enough grades to do that though

Fenton needs to answer the follwoing question...

Am i willing to give up the opportunity to live abroad, pick up a free education and a possible potential route to professional football to sign and train for a professional team, that perhaps I will never get a run on for and ultimately destroy the above opportunities (if not resigned).

What advice do you think Musa / Spoonly and Draper would give?

Spoons has a law degree and is probably reasonably paid for playing ASB Premiership football.  I doubt he's that upset.

Is Lovemore not eligible for the states anymore?
Is he good enough to come back to A-League one day?

Don't rate Lovemore at all, the A-league is a couple of steps too far for him.

I thought Lovemore was ok when he come on for the Nix that game.  Didn't he almost score??

Don't know about that. I get the impression the ASB Prem is probably too much for him.

Lovemore came on against Sydney? as a sub. He looked OK....his pace certainly got him into good attacking positions. He didn't look out of place. Nearly scored. I always wondered how he would have gone after a season learning with pros like Greenie and Ifill.

Yeah weren't him and Clapham called in.  Can't remember the reason though.  Actually I think Lovemore may have almost scored at the under 20 world cup but fluffed it somehow.

Also remember that its not just playing in a pro league that affects your eligibility; any time spent at university in NZ counts against you, so 2 years at NZ university means only 2 years [maybe 3] allowed to play at a US university/college.

Paston, Durante, SigmUnd, Bertos, Muscat, Diego, Lia, Ifill and Pavlovic were all either injured or suspended. The only available players outside the starting XI were Crowther and Toto.

Lovemore was okay for us in that brief cameo. He has pace, however, I think he doesn't have pace on the ball. He looked to hoof it in front and just chase after it. Lovemore's finish at the World Cup was enough reason to suggest he will never play at a high level..

He wouldn't be the first or last to miss a chance like that though.  Sure there have been worse misses by better quality players.

Lovemore shouldn't be judged on that chance...was ok for us in Hamilton against Brisbane a looong time ago- looked better than Kosta (before we knew Ange had a system)...heck D-mac even scored a 25m screamer...

Bruno Cazarine - thoughts?  Apparently available at the end of the season.  Not going to change our style of play or get us playing more expansively but probably an upgrade on what we have and would fit in with our current style

Personally, I don't like him. Don't ask me why, I just don't, maybe it's because he seems like he is always complaining or something.

My thoughts too.... he has that endearing Brazialian trait of falling down when hit with a feather, mid you Daniel started that way and he seems to have had that knocked out of him. He scores a few goals 16 in two years at Sydney and 3 assists , so while better than what we have at present, nothing startling. He is 29 soon so has probably had his best years, so on balance, I think we should be aiming for something a little better.

I suggested him last year, but was shot down because 'he is a donkey'. He misses quite a few chances, but at least he is getting into the position to score. Upgraded version of DMac really. With the limited import slots, we really should be aiming higher, but depends how much we are allowed to spend.
