Because by my calaculations, the only young All Whites that could be counted as youth players are Howieson, Payne, Rojas and maybe Gleeson and Myers?

Considering the age of the Nix squad, young could mean Clapham at 25. We have 2 youth slot to fill, and it was said that we were wanting a defender and midfielder. Maybe Myers for the defender slot.

What about Boxall maybe? TBH I don't know much about him but I hear he's versatile, and I don't think he's been getting first team games at Vancouver. Not an U21, but at age 23 still a young player, especially by Nix standards!

Not sure how much time he would get here either, unless he can play RB. The last game we tried 3 at the back, with North/Siggy/Dura, we abandoned it at HT.

It doesn't really make sense to sign 'young all whites' if they dont qualify as under 21 players. As the club has said they want a senior RB and striker, and a u21 mid & cb.

I'm not sure if Myers qualifies for a youth spot, although Brent Griffiths was 21 before season start IIRC.

But I would take guys like Boxall for sure

Yeah, I have heard he can play DM as well as CB so I was thinking that Ricki might look to convert him into a RB as that's an area that both the Nix and AWs look to have few options. Then if Siggy or Dura got injured/suspended he could be shifted into a central role and either Muscat, Brockie, Lia or one of the academy players could be drafted into RB temporarily.

All just speculation of course but I was just trying to think of young players in the AWs who might have a role in the Nix, and apart from Boxall, Myers and Hogg there doesn't seem to be any who might make the move because they are already in better places in their careers, or in the case of McGeorge or Gleeson, play in a position where we are already well-covered. Having said that, the Kosta option intrigues me seeing as he doesn't seem to be playing at all in Russia. Rojas or WeeMac would be good but seem unlikely, while I can't imagine any of the UK-based youngsters moving back here at this stage.

I'd love Boxall here as CB cover. Wouldn't want to see him as a mid but RB is a maybe, not sure if I can see him getting forward and whipping in crosses though.

i personally could see Boxall, Reid or Smith playing as a DM. Seem to have the distribution and go-forward abilities needed.

From Boxall's thread in the Kiwis overseas section:

reg22 wrote:
the current back four haven't yet conceded a goal this season.  they have also signed former tottenham defender lee young-pyo to play at right back, a position boxall previously covered for the team

Also in there there is some talk of him playing in midfield when he was younger too.

From the other kiwis overseas thread there's this:

abris wrote:

Joshimar D`Silva Martins (12th) and Kayne Vincent (90+4th) scored for the United SC who finished No 3 in the local league.

Kayne Vincent contract with Prayag SC is ending at the ebnd of this month

http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/kayne-vincent/profil/spieler_154538.html

If his Wikipedia page is accurate he's got quite an impressive goal-scoring record.Anyone seen him play recently?  Is he A-league quality? A possible striker for the Nix perhaps? 30 goals in his last 40 club appearances apparently. Even if the I-league is around NZFC level that's still pretty good

*EDIT: I hear the I-league is pretty crap. Not so impressive then. Oh well, the search continues...

Could he plausibly play RB for the Phoenix? If he's solid defensively I don't mind if he doesn't get forward as much. That could give liscence for Muscat or Smith to get forward more which I think would compensate some what for having RB who stays right back and lacks some of attacking aspects of we like in wing back.

Not an entirely unfamiliar role for him since he aparently played it in highschool.

I understand he's not getting much game time in Canada... This all sound fairly positive to me but I don't know all that much about the guy. Did he play in the confederations cup?

Seeing as we need a gun striker and we're not too rich... do you think Ricki might be having a quiet word with Benjamin Totori this evening? I was impressed.

Missed today's game in the end (grrr) but Totori was a class player with Manawatu a few years back - I always thought a few of those Solomon Islanders could have been professional (Commins Menapi was another one)... but I heard a rumour that they weren't commited enough in training. Dunno if it was cultural differences or it could even have been untrue. Colin Tuaa would know as he's the one who brought them out to play in Palmy I think, or at least was coach of Manawatu around that time. Maybe Ricki could have a word with him about Totori?

Came on here to talk about Benjamin Totori and not surprised I'm the second to sing his praises. Solomon Island strikers are often some of the best at the domestic levels of New Zealand and I'd imagine if he was still playing ASB Premiership then Benjamin Totori would be the best at that level too.

just had a look at his wikipedia page and saw that he actually did play professionally - for the Portland Timbers! but then he got injured and went home. Guess that disproves the "not training hard enough" rumour. Anyway, he is also younger than I thought he was (26).

Might not be a big targetman for our wide players but a combo of him, Ifill and Sanchez playing through the middle would be pretty sweet.

He gets my vote! Sign him up!

To be fair, I would be happy to have him as an option if we weren't going to fill all the import slots otherwise

Just as a point of clarification, Totori was there in the pre-MLS days, when the Timbers competed in the USL.

Yeah there should be an Asian and Oceania player slot for each club. Australia still owes a lot to the OFC and this would not only help the Oceania players, but also increase interest of the league to the pacific islands. And as we have seen recently, there is definitely a huge number of people who are interested in footy

Totori would be better than Toto and Johnny Chen.

If he had citizenship then sure but he's not half the class of the striker we need in my opinion.

Can't afford to spend a foriegn spot on him. Although if things transpire well and we end up with a rightback and striker with an import spot to spare I wouldn't have any problem with signing him. Looks decent, has an eye for goal and would push Pav way out of first team contention.

A-League should have 4 import slots + and extra Asian/Oceania non-Kiwi player but I can't imagine many Australian clubs would use an Oceania player instead of an Asian one, ACL and all that and there aren't heaps of A-league ready Oceania players to my knowledge.

But they would be cheaper than Asian players and probably appealing to us/Aussie clubs looking to stay in the cap like the Jets or Perth, maybe Adelaide...

Yeah that was effectively a summary made out of procrastination. I just like to feel like a part of things  (needs more sheepish emoticons)

Really I think everyone hammering on about signing people who score in the OFC is a bit premature but it keeps the speculation rolling and that makes me happy.

I like you sentiment applie to my comment and yours... and this reply!

Huray for procrastination!! Huray for pointless posts comments of no significance!!

Are there any trainspotters out there who could tell us how many of the available foreign spots were used by each club last year? I'm guessing there were a few spots free, in which case I would argue that there is plenty of room for a few island players in the A league.

Sure, someone like Titori wouldn't be good enough to compete with the top foreigners in the league, surely there is still room for a player like that in many clubs.

CCM is normally the only team that doesnt use up all import slots.

As it stands for next season, these are how many Visa slots each team has:

Adelaide  - 2 (3 if Cassio gets his passport)
Brisbane - 1 (2 if Adnan leaves)
Central Coast - 3
Melbourne Heart - 3
Melbourne Victory - 3
Newcastle - 3
Perth - 1
Sydney - 2
Wellington - 1 (2 if Greenacre doesn't get re-signed)

Most sides have holes to fill, so would expect teams to use them up (except for CCM)

I believe that ricki or right wing garreth has already said they are unlikely to fill all the Import spots which points to greenie not being signed. Which is a good thing in my opinion If we have a spare import spot I would love it if it went to an islander I know we are a pro team but one or two would not be out of place. Useful also politically for the Phoenix when the arguments against them being in the a league is raised by the next Asia big wig

We have said we are looking to sign a youth centre back, how did Brian Kaltack look when he was training with the club?

I would prefer the youth spots went to kiwis If however we have a spare import spot available we have no intention of using I would prefer it is used on a player from the islands If they can hold their own verses us they can probably hold their own In the a league

He is far too selfish on the ball, wants to do everything himself even when passing the ball to another player in a better position was the best option. Wouldn't fit in at the Nix

Damn. That's the perils of basic text updates: no context. Ah well, the search for the mythical striker continues...

I know we were after him until he went to Blackburn, but think Tim Payne would've gone well for us.

Ifill can be accused of the same things, often more talented players in a team back themselves more than they should.

From what I saw of Totori, he is very good at the levels he has played in. But the levels he has played at are well below the A-League. So it is too hard to judge if he could make the step up, so no one will take the risk. If he was serious about playing in the A-League, he needs to go play in the VPL. If he can shine there, an A-League club would be more willing to take the chance.

If anyone is passing by the Nix office could you check if anyone is actually there. Assuming there is might pay to check for a pulse.
