someone in a very creative midfielder role, sanchez if fuly fit will do this but we need a couple of options in the centre of the park, manny, lia and smilth are all ok but none of them terribly creative.

Queenslander 3x a year.

Herbert is hunting for an attack-minded midfielder, with Tom Biss (academy) and Aaron Clapham (Canterbury United) both options.

I thought we were looking for a striker? Especially with Sanchez about to return.

also, what has clapham done now that he wasn't doing last year, or the year before?  If he wasn't good enough then why is he good enough now?

Maybe a decent backup one - but I think Stein is the best all-round striker we've ever had. Including Smeltzy. Seriously rated the performances he's put in - flown under the radar a bit but everytime he gets the ball you know he's going to have a good touch.

don't think it's lack of strikers that is the problem- tactics and cohesion and the WEATHER for mine. Still waiting for that consistency and complete attacking performance

Couple of seasons ago he was the only bright note from Sydney's season, but just seemed to disappear last season. There was a Malaysian club interested in getting him on loan. Isn't an out and out striker, more a wide striker and we already have a few of those.

Clapham doesn't fit the no cocks policy. Thinks he is a lot better than he is, attitude is not there. My mate works at a bar in CHCH and has gotten into a few arguments with Clapham when he says that he deserves a pro contract and pulls out the "How many World Cups have you been to" card. Tbh I wouldn't want him here.

If I was confronted by some dick in a bar and he was annoying the shit out of me, I would probably say the same too.

My mate is the barman there, not some confronting dick in a bar annoying the shit out of people... and all the other staff I know that work there agree.

AC is a good guy, and probably more down to earth than most national league players. Why is your mate getting into arguments with people paying to drink at his bar?

Just hope the owners get a break with the dire weather. See it's lucky dip for the weekend as well. No matter what we think, families won't take their kids to a game with 150k + gales howling thru the city. Phoenix deserved the breaks in the lottery game anyway. Can't get a fix on where they are at home really until we get a fair weather day. Outside Melbourne and CCM's - think anyone else is fair game for the Phoenix, and that includes Adelaide, whose long programme will take its toll in the New Year. Think there's more improvement in us. If Sanchez can spark up the creatives, it could be interesting.

Ball at feet Stein is quality. Can't remember him coughing up possession at all last game. Really good technique and passer of the ball, don't think he suits the targetman role Ricki has been playing him as but out on the wing he looks good.

Definately good and Im all in favour of what he does for team..had a chance on Sunday to take ball further and into penalty box..as did a couple of others and take a player on and maybe draw foul (not dive).  Not doing so takes away one of the goal scoring opportunities from striker.  Team also needs to work on always having someone running to edge of circle to get cutbacks.

Also we need to work on our movement when we have throw ins (same with All Whites) we always cough up possession here.

I know Marco should be good enough to get a gig in Europe next season, but if not, I hope we offer him a contract.

I don't think he will ever come back to Wellington until he is over 30. He has so much ahead of him, why would he want to come back?

I agree with you he will get a big gig soon enough - although I think another season or two in the A-League wouldn't hurt him - but definitely no point in offering him a contract in my opinion.

player Leo Bertos has been linked to Millwall in the January window

Same - and his Mrs retweeted it. If he's off then what happens at RB?

For serious? Where were they 3 or so years ago when he was in his prime? Considering his age I'm rather surprised.

This has been on the highly reliable Football Rumours site since 29 November:

29 Nov 2012 00:02:16
Millwall manager Kenny Jackett is to be financially backed in the New Year to try and achieve a play off spot. Jackett is wanting three players.
Jackett is set to bid for MK Dons defender Antony Kay. Kay has played Championship football for Barnsley and is seen as a main target for Jackett.
Another defender who could join is Leeds player Paul Connolly. Connolly has been transfer listed by Neil Warnock and could sign for as little as £100,000.
Finally, an attacking midfielder is a position in need. Wellington Phoenix player Leo Bertos will fly from New Zealand to sign a contract with the Londoners in the coming weeks for a move in the New Year. Bertos has also played Championship football with Barnsley in the past.

There is no way they will take bertos. He is the most defensive attacking player ever, it was so bad they moved him to defense at the phoenix

Good move for him if he's picked up. Can't see it happening though.

Lia to RB and Biss to pick up a contract maybe, or Rowe and try to convert him to being able to play on the right hand side.

Wow... This has come out of nowhere. What sort of pricetag would we put on Leo?

Wonder what role they are looking at... if its a wide attacking player, perhaps they should have scouted Welly a little bit. Fenton offers a lot more than Bertos does now and has youth on his side (although not Bertos experience).

Would be a hoot if he gets picked up as a RB. Should have made the move sooner : )

Jokes aside we might be able to pick up a little bit of coin for Leo but more importantly it would free up some more space in the salary cap. Pavlovic's Salary and Bertos Salary gone could leave us with a nice bit of coin to play around with.

Hamish Watson to take over from Pav?  Ive only seen a few highlights in Team Welly matches but he looks like a big lad and strong in the air.  Unsubtle but someone to sling crosses at in the last 10 and knows where the goal is

Watched a bit of Millwall this season.

They are such a significant step up from A-League quality. Bertos would be a mediocre A-League attacking midfielder at best now, though slightly better a couple of years ago.

Similarly, Millwall's style of play, they need someone who can lift the ball over the first man to get to the big guys in the box.

Rojas, maybe, Bertos, nay chance

I'm happy with Leo Bertos at RB so would be a shame to lose him. Can't see why Millwall would want him. As said above, Rojas > Bertos. Hamish Watson would be my pick for a Pav replacement.

Wonders aloud if the Nux are one of the clubs refereed to...

http://www.news.com.au/sport/football/central-coast-mariners-will-fight-for-kiwi/story-fndkzvnd-1226530768102

MARINERS boss Graham Arnold admits the club could lose the creativity of Michael McGlinchey, even though the New Zealand international will be their most urgent recruitment target for next season.

Though Arnold lamented the rules that allow a free-for-all on players at the end of deals, it's understood club officials are urgently compiling a new deal they hope will entice McGlinchey to stay in Gosford for at least another year.

A-League players in the last year of their contracts having been free to speak to other clubs since October 1, and it's believed McGlinchey has had several approaches after a series of increasingly pivotal displays dating back to the World Cup in 2010.

Arnold said the former Celtic trainee is pondering a return to Europe, but he is certain the Mariners will be McGlinchey's only choice if he opts to stay in Australia.

"He's 25 and testing the water, which is every player's prerogative," Arnold said.

"He's been talking about the possibility of heading back to Europe but if he stays in Australia I'd be amazed if it was with any other club.

"They'd have to offer him a fortune to persuade him to move elsewhere. I'm pretty sure of that.

"But it's crazy. We're only in round nine and already we're talking publicly about players' futures. I know it's a FIFA rule, but there are still 18 games to go plus the finals and the Asian Champions League.

"I'd prefer to get on with it and leave it to the chairman and CEO to talk to players about their contracts."

Arnold praised the midfielder, who took the mantle of playmaker in the defeat of Adelaide while Tom Rogic was absent last weekend with the Socceroos.

"Since I've been at the club, he's been superb," Arnold said. "In two years he's been to a World Cup, to the Olympics and played a lot of games for New Zealand. So it's no surprise he's been noticed."
