Hogg for sure but dunno about Clapham. Could be Henderson..... Keat is available until beginning of march, maybe he's open to a short term  guest deal for games etc...

Herbert also confirmed the Phoenix were close to signing a new player, with an announcement likely early next week.

An initial list of half a dozen players has been whittled down to three, as Herbert mulls over whether to go with a defender or an attacking midfielder.

"It will be in my thoughts to play the player in a couple of A-League games to make a clearer assessment on whether the player would warrant signing longer-term," Herbert said.

"It's a decision on either midfield or more of a defensive-type player."

Would think it is Hogg being given a chance to sink or swim.

If you were looking at (we assume) cheap options, no transfer fees, kiwis and 'a couple of games to see if they are worth signing long term' then Hogg and Clapham certainly fit the description...

Working on that assumption, which would be the bigger need, an LB or a midfielder? Considering the state of our midfield, it would be a fait accompli.

Obviously does not speak volumes for Lindsays ability and all those 'Lindsay needs to be bought in to start' crowd. It would not surprise me however if the season is lost, that Ricki does experience to see what others can do. Why wouldn't you if you have nothing to lose.

Interestingly, who is off contract at the end of this year? Lindsay, Paston.... This would probably dictate who we look at for next year in terms of signings.

One thing to remember folks. The All Whites have a WCQ on Friday March 22nd, a day before we're due to play the Planes in Wellington.

Would Ricki be seriously considering bringing another All White into the Phoenix Squad knowing that he will have to leave them out of either an A-League match or an International match?

My IT industry sauces have it that Paston has been recently weighing up options outside of football.

Based on previous selections, those two are unlikely to be involved.

So your saying if we had a choice between a kiwi or no one he would sign zilch? It's not like we swapping a non kiwi with a home grown talent so we would still have same amount of available Phoenix player's no matter what.

In saying that does anyone think this could be last chance saloon for HYSEGEMS? Perform or your listed? 200k to be a bench warmer is alot and if he doesn't do much tonight thats what he might end up

I'd be happy with Hogg and Keat. Think it would only feed into the interest created by Fenton and Brockie. Unfortunately you guys had to kick Ricki up the bum to take on Rojas then he didn't know what he had. Likewise Barbarouses.

Ricky knew Marco was quality.. Marco didn't want new contract because he wanted to play different position to what Ricky had in his plans.

If this is the case I certainly hope it's Hogg. I think the lad will excell in the A League. He'd definitely be an improvement on a fading Lochhead.

So I stand by what I said, Ricki didn't know what he had and only played Rojas when Ifill was injured. Barbarouses was usually on the bench too then moved to Brisbane and had a stellar season. It's no secret that both players flourished under a coach who knows how to develop talent. That's why the Phoenix have not progressed in my opinion the way they should have.

This is also why i worry for Boxall. Clear quality defender and would be easily better in place of Bertos, who in turn should by all accounts be a little further up the pitch. And I dont buy into this "hes a central defender" bullshit either, Bertos is a midfielder.

Tough call. Hogg would be the future for sure but at the moment LB is not really an area where we have major problems. Lochy has slowed a bit but he is still a smart experianced footballer. OK Hogg would provide more punch going forward but his time will come next season. Hogg can also play wide attacking mid but we have plenty of OK players in that position.

So that leaves a CM..where we do have problems. Has to be a kiwi or Aussie. Can anyone really see Ricki back tracking and bringing in Clapham. He has signalled many times that he does not rate him A-League standard. It would be a major about face if he now signed Clapham . Ricki said he would trial this person for 3 games to see if they were a-League standard and then sign them long term......which leaves out Keat.

Anyone else? Maybe they have an eye on someone playing State level in Oz

But if Ricki is not coaching next year, what does he care if Clapham is signed? Thats for the next coach to deal with... I agree with your post though.

The article on Stuff says that he will either be coach, or DoF next year. So either way he should care.

I'd go for AJ's because Boxall is actually a ("bullshit") central defender and Leo is the only one with decent pace in our defence, so we need him for that alone.

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

Box all has a lot of potential as a CB and did well in his two games. Lindsey must be pissed off, talk of signing another midfielder and giving him three games when he's yet to have one.

Maybe it's Biss and he's thinking ahead to next year

lol since when? Why do we all of a sudden need someone with pace at right back? We've never had pacey defenders. Dura and Siggy arent quick but they know what theyre doing. Lochhead, as slow as hes become, was never quick at the best of times. Neither was Manny. Or anyone. If Leo knew how to defend and didnt get caught out as often from pressing then he wouldnt need to rely on pace to track back, which hes usually slow as fuck at doing anyway unless under direct pressure. If you know how to defend you dont need to be the quickest on the pitch. Personally id rather have his pace going forward than going back - absolute waste that we dont have a proper right back. I honestly dont know how we've hit our salary cap with our current squad, just seems like somebodies not doing their job properly.

We don't need pace at RB especially if playing 4-3-3 with quick wingers. We need someone with great distribution skills. Bertos is ok at distributing but not great. Someone like Kompany would b handy haha

Permalink Permalink

Odd, Seems to me like you'd need more pace from your fullbacks when playing a 4-3-3.

Allegedly

Musa didn't and he got loaned to Hereford...
With what Herbert is talking, Tim Payne is not the person he describes. 3 games to see if he can be signed long term? Paynes abilities are well known to Herbert and considering is a long contract at a 'good' (I use the term loosely) club, why would he come here. Hence why I called Vincent out for sauce... I would also doubt as loan player, he would fit into our cap space (we have none is the catch cry)

"Herbert reiterated a new young player would be brought in during this month's transfer window and he effectively has a three-month trial to justify a longer-term deal."

Clapham is not a young player (26).. Signs point to Hogg.
