No kiwi coach so it's hard to see not many if any kiwis being signed.

I think the referees would foul him out of the league.

They let Burns get away with murder each week. And Muscat before he retired was 100 times worse.
Both of them are and were more likely to give away fouls with sliding tackles but Rory loves to use his arms and elbows every time the ball gets near him. The players you mention are more likely to get sent off but the general fouls they commit are usually when the other team has the ball so they are much less costly.

Wow! Didn't mean to cause this much of a stir haha, was just stating the obvious question. Regardless of whether he is or isn't good enough.

We can only have 5 foreigners so new coach will be restricted in who he can bring in to Kiwi's and Aussies and the Aussie club will be front runners in most cases when it comes to Aussie players.

Plus I'm sure the owners wouldn't hire someone who refused to get on board with their pro-NZ approach

or like this?

If Rory Fallon could score a toe poke every week I'd take him. You'd be stupid not to. But he won't, he's long time past it.

Think he'd be a better squad option than Hearfield...and he might have a McBreen in him, who knows? How old is he?

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

I still reckon he could do a job for us but probably unlikely to consider coming home after all these years is he? Doesn't seem to mind moving around the UK to get a job though.

Probably too embarrassed about his old man being banned.

No, he was better coaching young adults that would agree with him.

He's got a hot British missus hasn't he? Who probably isn't so keen on Welly...

But I sure as f@#$%% wouldn't mind him in the squad. A pro who can do a job, open up space for Brockie, Stein, Boyd or Louis...I think we got pushed around a lot this year, and I don't think he'd be the worst we could do, and not a foreign spot. As long as he's happy not being guaranteed as a starter. Don't think we've got enough professional experience in the squad that we can sniff our noses at someone with a bit of experience that isn't a foreign spot. Plus I think he put his heart into all the games he played for NZ and was good against Australia. We'll be playing Australians most weeks I think....

Journalists definitely aren't cheerleaders but NZ certainly has no 'football journalists' either so that might explain it Alex.

Good luck for the future!

Thanks Alex !

lol - forum not so good.

Its amazing how much we build up and then knock down players on the YF forums.

Good luck with whatever comes next.

It happens eveywhere. Hes a pro footballer - handle it

I'm surprised players actually come on the forums. Iffs and Smithy, must be more.

Who am I gonna interview now????

A real shame that he wasn't a domestic player because if he had been, he would have probably been reatined.

I also feel like he took a lot of the blame for others not performing at their level and Ricky loosing control over the team/his marbles.

Hope he gets a pro-contract somewhere. Top guy, good MF

If a player isn't performing though what do they expect us to say???

It will be interesting to see where he signs next

He has been tweeting about training with the Benalla Saints AFL team. So I guess he has moved to Melbourne and heart needs players. 2+2=5 etc

I felt like at one point he became the main culprit for all that was wrong with the team. The likes of Leo, Manny, Lia, Sanchez, Ifill (when he was fit) didn't do much better yet Smith is the only one (together with Totori who was absolutely God awful every time he stepped onto that pitch) to loose his place in the team and never really made it back.

Don't get me wrong, I'm the first to say we should use our import slots for players who are considerably better than aus/nz nationals, but all in all I feel like he's been hard done by - that's all.

Never liked him; poor signing to begin with. Good luck to him.

So if Smith has been  axed who made the call? New coach already making squad decisions befoe he's announced?

With only 1 visa spot open, it was always going to be unlikely he re-signs. Sounds like the club hadn't talked to him about a new contract for months.

pretty much the same as my thoughts on the subject. I think he could have been used a lot  better by Ricki but for whatever reason he just got shut out

Is Billy Celeski still off-contract at Victory?

Don't go near Celeski. Hasn't been himself for a good 2 years now.
In saying that, played his best football under Merrick.

Think he had best passing stats in the league last season.

Nichols coming in and Finkler returning may mean he will be looking for new oppourtunities

Halfway through the last season I thought he was one of, if not the, best player for the tards. Seemed to tail off in the second half, but then much of the team did as well. I wouldn't be against Celeski.

I suppose there isn't much choice Australian-midfielder wise; none that would come to us anyway. Will be slim pickings and I could definitely see Ernie picking up Celeski.

Celeski would be good. HN been talking him up for a while...

does continue the Melbourne light theme...!!

Merrick denied at the press conference that he had had anything to do with any decisions on Alex Smith.
