Worth the risk IMO.

In other matters, FFA today confirmed that each Hyundai A-League club will have a limit of five (5) visa players for next season, 2014/15. In the following season 2015/16 the limit will be reduced to four (4) visa players.

Interesting for Stein in particular I reckon.

I could see us picking up Krishna next season then, pretty sure he wont be a visa player in time for the reduction.
Sorry Ryan but that is one I definitely do not see happening. Imports need to provide quality. Krishna does not.
Im unconvinced he is up to it as well but we have put an offer to Waffles. If its a two year deal for Waffles, how hard will it be to pick up a new visa player on a one year deal?

Gotta disagree. All imports in our price range who come from outside the a-league tend to be high risk. I think Stein is low risk in comparison. He has been (touch-wood) injury free and he doesn't really rely on pace so I don't see his age as a particular issue. I have no idea how much money he wants so that would be the only thing that would make him high risk to me.

I'd offer a hobbled Ifill a 1 year deal than offer Krishna one. Ifill is only really good for one year anyway I suspect. Ties in nicely.

Is it true that WSW still have 6 import spots at the moment?

Isn't Ifill a kiwi next year?

They have 7 for this season but only using 5.

@ JV: Ifill should be able to qualify as a Kiwi next season.

Ah there you go. That makes it easier again.

Ernie Merrick seems to be promoting young Kiwis ..so what about Thomas Biss? He's certainly scoring a lot in the ASB Premiership

What else does he do other than score? There is more to footballers than just scoring

Give Stein another two years....he is only 31. His game is skill based and not pace based.....so age is less of an issue. I'll bet there would be 9 other A-league clubs that would snap him up. Equal first in the golden boot....knows the club, happy in Wellington, great guy......its a low risk choice

totally agree with this, give the guys two more years, let him retire at the club, he's done enough to justify it for mine.

Are you on the sauce.. Half a decent season and he can retire at the club..

Did you hear the announcement that "Ryman Healthcare" are the Nix new sponsors from 2015

At least the reduction in visa spots should help us out because in the past we've struggled to get good imports compared to other A League clubs, and the fact that kiwis don't count as imports for us means that it'll be less likely that any kiwi talent we have will be poached by other HAL teams.

Unfortunately is probably makes it less likely a kiwi will sign for another A-League side.

yeah good for the Nix, bad for NZ football as a whole.

this,
plus we've heard he is a good mentor for the youngsters
seems a consummate pro, no problems off the field and pretty handy on it

I'm not sure I buy the argument that this is bad for NZ Football as a whole. Our top players (at this level, e.g. Rojas, Kosta) will be very much known quantities and imo if they're good enough will likely be in demand despite being imports. If they're not good enough, are we losing much?

As we've seen imports can be risky, and I'd say more than a few clubs would be happier using an import spot on a reliable, low-risk option from NZ than they would gambling on an overseas player. If the Phoenix can continue to provided that pathway for younger and more inexperienced players, I don't think NZ Football loses much by kiwi players being imports, and clubs having fewer import spots.

rojas, weemac wopuld be two I could see club easily being happy to use an import slot on, smeltz too probably, at a guess I'm sure CCM would be ok with spending one on Roux.

Smeltz and Roux are not classified as imports, same as Moss and Manny would not be if they went back to Australia.

oh ok, should have realised smeltz had duel citizenship - wasn't sure about Roux......

Seems to be a lack of calls for free agent Erik Paartalu to be signed as an injury replacement for Riera. It's probably pages back that I've missed tbf.

Exact type of player we would be looking for. Probably need dispensation due to jus release date and all that.

Would love for Portaloo to come here, but suspect getting his wages under the salary cap would be an issue as he would command far more than Rierra, although that said we should be on a Winner with Krishna for Iffill

could use the aussie marquee slot for his wages if we wanted.

Fairly sure that Paartalu would qualify for a guest contract and that would be paid outside the cap. Grab him for 7 games & 3 finals games!

Would be awesome. I really rate him and think he was one of the vital wheels in the Roars success, along with Broich and the mad Albanian. It has taken Bratten a season and a half to adapt to the role Portaloo was playing.

Problem is, I think Gareth and co are spending all their money on Pretty pictures for Petone.

Yeah could struggle to fit his wages under Riera's. But could creatively change Krishna to be Riera's replacement and make Paartalu Ifill's replacement??

Not sure he would want to come here but rumours suggest he is looking at any options to get back into footy for a chance to make Brazil

Most of the talk I've seen is about a move to the K-League or J-League. Bit too late to have a go at the MLS and there is not many other transfer windows are open atm. If he was able to be signed on a guest contract, it would help both us and him greatly.

Paartalu is free agent? SIGN!!!!! That is no temporary signing, that is a check out our sweet midfield for next year signing! Paartalu and Riera together with Hernandez?! That is very competitive sounding and you can still have Lia/Manny as back up!
We have to start luring Aussie players of that quality here and that will probably be expensive but Welnix will just have to suck it up. We can't do it all with NZ based talent.

totally agree - if he's available and wanting to make his mark what better waty than helping the nix into the finals......get him on board, FFS use the marquee slot - even if it is to get his wages out of the cap consideration - he doesn't have to be on $10k a week.

He did burn a few bridges in Brisbane with his 'I'm better than this' type transfer requests.

I think Gareth is also missing out here. He wants to make the club profitable by bringing up young talent and eventually selling it on to richer leagues. That is great. You can also make money by being astute in the transfer market, snapping up players like this guy and then on selling them further down the line. We don't have a great track record of this but it is possible (Mckain). If Gareth rates the coach as much as he says then he should allow him to have a crack at thus type of ausi
