Did you hear the coaches review of the tournment? Was very impressed with Gulley.

I'm not sure why we are talking about Matt Simon when we don't need strikers. We need midfielders.

I suggested him because he could be used in a role similar to how Greenacre was playing Gameiro. There are not many Aussie options that could provide the work rate in the midfield we need. It was just a thought because with our options up front, we will need a someone with a heck of an engine in midfield.

Surely Hernandez will be playing as the central attacking midfielder?

I was thinking, a 4-4-2 diamond. Simon / Brockie up front, Waffles & Ifill on wings. Carlos and Manny in midfield.

None of our strikers played well up front by themselves.

OK, but Greenacre played Gameiro largely in the midfield with Brockie and Hysugems up front.

I realise that. He didn't have Carlos to bring into the side. I was trying to keep the work rate and add him into the side.

I just can't see a 4-4-2 with Waffle & Brockie up front, Ifill & Fenton wide, Carlos and Manny in the middle working. We might have to play a 4-5-1, with a new import CM but that leaves us with the issue that none of the strikers can play as a lone striker.

I think you over-estimate Ifill and Fenton starting. Ifill is on a downward track and I do not believe he is a 90min footballer anymore. I think his best value is going to be fresh running at tired games. He still has value though.

Fenton needs to do a ton of offseason work to be a starter. He has definitely potential and raw talent so depending on that, I think depends on whether he starts or not.

I think really, Stein, Brockie and Carlos are really the only sure fire starters. The rest are open (and that includes Manny)

So we need a couple more wingers as well then? Neither Waffles or Brockie really provide much workrate, and Carlos isn't known for it either. It really is a question of how many of them we can carry in a 4-4-2 formation.

I think Hysugems workrate is fine, particularly in the early season he was looking to pressure players aggressively. He stopped that to some extent because the rest of the team wasn't really supporting him, if you want to press it needs to be done as a unit. Carlos, Ifill and Brockie is a concern though. At least Ifill picked it up towards the end.

This scares me too to be honest. I think Brockie's laziness was underacknowledged this season because of his goalscoring. With an ageing Ifill and Carlos joining us as well then I wonder how you fit all 3 of them in lineup together both in terms of formation and tactical approach? And all 3 would be among our highest paid so it seems a waste of salary cap space to not start them

I think we should sign Ryan McGowan & Rostyn Griffiths. Steal them away from China

I quite like Hysugems and thought he was under used and not played effectively from Herbert, but I wouldn't say he's a garunteed starter for next year.

Hopefully with a new coach, no one is a certainty, outside maybe the Captain and Moss at this stage. Having everyone start from scratch and have to impress will be a good thing.

pretty much a nick ward type player.. never really gonna cement a starting role at this level anymore

Ifill's still got it! He's still got the drive and attitude to make himself a starter. He's working hard to get as fit as he can over the off season.

Actually it's true. My source told me the same thing.

Glory have 15 players signed for next season, including attacker Isaka Cernak, who agreed to join the club before Edwards took over.Cernak, 24, was released by Melbourne Victory in January and played six games for Wellington.

That was never confirmed was it?

It was common knowledge he was going to Perth while he was playing here, seen it posted on this forum many times

Common knowledge is different to being true. The last we heard on it was when Cernak said that he has not signed with Perth.

Yeah there was a fair bit of rumour of talks etc with Perth, was in the dom too I think but then Cernak quashed it all by saying he hadn't signed.

Great to hear Manny Muscat confirm he wants to play right back and realizes he's better there.

Not quite true. He's realised that the team is better with him at right back. Slight difference.

When did Manny say that? What did I miss? Thats good news. Does this mean we won't target Storm or Elrich?

I think the audio must be in the latest poddy. I was sitting next to him when he said it.

Yep, it is in the podcast. We should still target Roux tho, as Manny has only 1 more season under contract. If I recall correctly, he did suggest he would head back to Aussie after his contract ended.

If we get Storm then we probably don't need Leo

Playing with words, he is better at right back.

Have you listened to the interview? He specifically avoided saying that he is better at right back. He did say that he now prefers right back, which is a complete turnaround from this time last year.

yep.

we have too many strikers who can't lead a line on their own or are too inconsistent to build a team around. We haven't settled on a team yet- hopefully Hernandez can create more for Stein and Brockie can get the bit between his teeth to equalise and win the way I remember (maybe completely incorrectly) Smeltzy doing. Though Smeltz had Lochhead and Daniel putting it on a plate for him...let's be honest they were much better crossers of a ball then, than Leo is at the moment...

How many assists has Leo had over the last 3 seasons? Last year will not be a fair indicaiton due to him playing at RB but i'm pretty confident even with the two years prior to that added on the number would not hit double digits, which is very very poor. (espically considering how well he did at Perth with assists before joining us, which is why we signed him) I'd keep Bertos as a squad player (Cover RB and RM) and be on the look out for a winger who can cross a ball and beat a man one on one, which is another thing Bertos no longer seems able to do. Bertos 5 years ago = a creative winger with flair and pace Bertos now = an industrious winger with a good work rate.

Didn't he have the highest number of assist in the 2011/12 season?

Didn't Flores win the Johnny Warren Medal in the 2010/11 season ?

2011 / 2012 season. I was meaning comparable to other teams, not within the nix squad.

Industrious at best now adays, a rotation / squad player worthy of a two year contract.

I would like to re-sign Leo, but it wouldn't be as a higher earner. That seems to be what the Club is offering, hence Leo getting interest from the Jets.

If he leaves, not sure who we replace him with.

Irrelevant, because MetalLeg was specifically talking about how many assists Bertos had got in that season.
