MEDIA RELEASE

For immediate release

MERRICK MAKES FIRST SIGNING

“I want him to play as many games as possible at a good level to get him ready as he will probably be in goal for our opening game against Brisbane Roar with Glen Moss likely to be called up for international duty,” Merrick said.

“Because of the situation the Phoenix is in regarding the number of national team players in the squad, it is vital that we have two good keepers with World Cup qualifying games coming up.”

“Also our goalkeeping coach Jonathan Gould worked with him for a season at Perth and knows his character, ability and potential.”

reading that Merrick is concerned about losing potential players to wc quals, moss going and second keeper in WC quals could well be spoonly or basalaj - which would mean we'd lose two keepers and we'd be down to our third. Smart signing for mine.,

Michael Boxall, Benjamin Totori, Griffin McMaster and Alex Smith. I hear they've all got A-League experience.

Maybe Doloras.

Oakleigh Cannons next match v Green Gully tomorrow night. Green Gully squad includes Brent Fisher, Jeff Fleming, Jason Hayne, all ex-ASB also rans.

So if Ernie is fishing around this level....

And Scott McDonald has no good reasons to come here - he is not ready to retire, and has a serious point to prove to the national selectors (he was dropped simply for not having ever scored for the NT despite scoring regularly for his EPL clubs). Actually a good player, and probably unfairly maligned - he is simply not a lone-striker type and that'd what the previous coach (Pim Verbeek) expected him to do. They even tried to pair him with Josh Kennedy, FFS, a comical and impractical combination of two attackers of a completely different style and temperament.

Scott McDonald is being paid...wait for it...$60,000 NZD per week at Middlesborough.  That's not even a joke.  So I doubt he'll be keen to take about a 90% pay cut to come here!

I somehow doubt the A League would allow that if a Syd/Mel/Bris side went running to the FFA and cried about the NZ side forcing players to break deals...

Clubs are happy to let players go, if they don't see a future for them at the club.

This conversation started with talking about the Aussie u20's. Almost all of them are all regulars at their A-league clubs. Those that are not, are highly rated and would be first called up for injuries or are NYL Keepers.

Only two Aussie u20 players without clubs are Corey Gamiero and Jamie Maclaren. We have already seen Corey, so maybe Greenacre may have a look at Maclaren as well as the Kiwi u20's.

McLaren wont come, will stay in Europe.  As for Italiano, seen him in the VPL.  not overly enthused by him, makes some good saves, but also makes some terrible errors as well.  Not to good with judgment coming of his line and tends to flap at the ball quite a bit as well.

I'm not too worried. Gould will sort him out. I've generally attributed a lot of our success with goal keepers to him. Paston, Moss and Vukovic are all great keepers and have been great for us and then you look at Reddy who had a stella half-season with us and not so much else where. Its all Gould

Exactly. Totori was not co-erced to break his contract, he was released. Huge difference so my initial position still stands so all this talk of these players that have been released is rubbish. If SYD go to Ifill and ask him to leave the Phoenix midway through his contract to go play for them, and you think the FFA would allow that, you need your head read.

Lol - its completely different. Plus the FFA would probably allow it but thats a different story - look at Bojic for an example of a top player leaving and the FFA not doing anything.
Fitzgerald left to get more game time - thats the kind of example that I'm talking about.

And in regards to the Aussie Under 20's, there are a few players in there who I'm sure would consider moving if they had the promise of more game time. The club may not actually allow it, but its definitely worth our time watching their games and getting an idea of which players we could pick up.

You never know, Ernie may really like guys like Gligor or Caira, and make them an offer that make them want to leave their current clubs where they arent getting much/any game time

Bojic was released by the club because he went to them and said he could not do the traveling anymore. He didn't go to them and say that SYD have asked him to go play for them so can you release me so I can go so not even close to it. Had Bojic done that, you can bet he would have been told no.

Clubs may also be willing to let some of these guys go for free transfers. Just to not stand in their way of regular game time.

Allegedly

Yes he would have been told no - by CCM though, not FFA - but obviously he had the Sydney gig lined up before he talked to the Mariners. He had signed a contract renewal just last year so its not like the travel was a surprise for him.
If Muscat went to Nix HQ and said he wanted a termination because of personal reasons then I think the club would probably allow it in a similar way to Bojic. Otherwise you have a player on your books who clearly isnt happy.

But in general I'm more talking about players who would ask to leave due to wanting to get more game time

Gameiro didn't impress me greatly last year so would hope we aim a little higher tha him especially if we are looking to use a good chunk of our remaining salary on a striker and a midfielder.

I agree

If we are looking to sign him, our scouting it pretty ordinary. He will be a middle of the road A League footballer and I want us to do better. Not a BAD signing but not one where I go 'Oh that's a pretty choice signing there bro'

Pretty good for an under 20 year old player, I reckon he will be a strong player over the next couple of years as he gets a little older.

I think he's good for his age, but from the things he (apparently) said about Wellington (that it's a shit place to live, basically) - I don't want him at the club. Of course, that is hearsay so I won't comment on it too much.
