Wow. Insult our football knowledge all you like, but I will not stand for having our collective wisdom about cupcake baking and Zororastrian theology called into question!

Fantastic news but I still want to see the other right kids trialling for spots...

Matthew Ridenton is on par with Rufer as is Browne (if he is indeed there?)

Apparently Alex Rufer has signed a three year deal.

Must be a senior contract if its for 3 years. Worried about how much game time he would get tho, kids need to be playing.

would it be possible to loan him to team wellington? im not sure how it works when it comes to a semi pro club and also if those silly rules would apply (the 2 week waiting period thing) if nix were to cancel the loan.

ASB Premiership is 'amateur' so if Rufer signs a senior deal, he would be unable to play for TW. Only leagues we can realistically loan players into are the Aussie State Leagues, which are winter leagues.

cool, thanks.

good to see Ernie knows what he's doing with Rufer. Hopefully a Antonis doesnt get pulled where we put him in center mid though.

Ernie is much more media savvy than Rick. He communicates his ideas quit well. The players must be super stoked to play that style of football, specially after winning the wooden spoon. I'm really looking forward to see how fast they can implement that on the pitch. 73 days to kick-off.

He is more media savvy but the style of football he described was a carbon copy of what we had for the last three or four years.

When did we ever see L******d play like a LW ?

NEVER.

Lochead got a lot of balls into the penalty area. They may not have beat the first man, but they did get into the area. He wasn't quick, but he was very fit. He got forward a lot, much of how a wing back can play depends on who is in front of him, when it was Daniel I would hazard a guess and say he probably led the league in terms of wing backs crossing into the box.

Lochy wasn't sluggish though, TBF. And which striker can you name since Smeltz who has been great at putting away aerial delivery? Brockie's not bad, Greenie was ok, but Smeltz was lethal.

Ernie's Report Card - after less than 8 weeks in the job

Fresh, open approach with media: A
Clear communication of desired style of play required to win and entertain: A+
Quickly released players who wouldn't fit the bill: A+
Trialled a whole bunch of young maybes: A
Signed some quality imports in key positions: B+ ('regista' or 'volante' playmaking deep midfielder still to come i hope)
Offered contracts to some young players with good potential: A
Seems to have energised team spirit: A

Really, hard to fault too much of what he's done in 7 weeks.

What I 'd like to see next:
Sign quality #6 (see above)
Plenty of warm up games pre-season
Get the FSW sorted so that we have more players in a professional set up coming through
Get clear on the TW relationship

a)Good international signings. Yes. Seems like they will be improvements on what we had.
b)Defence: Nothing yet. No cover for Moss (unless Italiano is much better than his experience), no new defensive players. Have to wait and see on Adams. We don't seem particularly more sound defensively than last year yet.
c)Attacking plan: Yes. There seems to be a clear push for pace, ball movement and attacking variety that we often lacked last season. Have to wait on the delivery. In theory we have a larger number of players who would be goal scorers for us.
d)Haven't heard a peep out of Gareth yet: Yes

Better than Ricki on a, c,d, although at game one last year after thrashing Sydney with Ifill still to come back into the mix Ricki was looking fairly good too.

Perhaps we should demand a Labour-esque approach and mandate that certain positions can ONLY be filled by kiwi players.

As long as we don't sign any New Zealand women- they seem to be quite good at the round ball game and I'm not sure we could cope with the shock if we signed a kiwi who ripped up the league....!

Welcome to the way-too-long off-season mayhem that is YF, Wang Chung, you'll fit in well around here.

A well crafted bait to get a few nibbles and bites... and a good strike or too...hope you stick around, the fishing's good most days!

(queue mods, "Jesus wept* etc, etc)

back to transfer speculaas ......

Very interested to hear about the possibility of another Rufer about to launch into the NZ footballing spotlight..Do we have a sauce with the speculaas?    (swiss chocolate sauce preferred)

Edit: thanks for that PlayWith Fire....^       gift wrapped even.

Improving,,on the up, a work in progress from Italiano and the Nix. Bring on the bathroom bling in '24! COYN!

Don't think you can say he is better than Rick on point a. Ricki did sign Ifill, Husygems and Hernandez. EM has only signed KC - jury still out

Great news about Rufer. A couple of my mates played against him at Napier tournament when he was 15yo and said they've never seen anything here that good at same age. They're a cynical lot too. Hope he keep's improving. Every chance now.

Yep. People are understating what Ricki did far too much. How quickly people forget where we were in that first season and how Ricki transformed us into a team that consistently made the finals and competed well.

Pisses me off, to be honest. Jury is still out on Ernie, we'll see when the season starts. We are still missing players in key positions.

LOL     We already know that.   Its a football forum. You get used to it.  Just trawl through the shiite and sometimes you might find some jems!

Anyway someone has already made the point......  "some of them don't know much about football at all".....I can't remember who said that, it was age's ago.

As for Rufer...very happy about his signing. Not seen him play but even normally cynical people on this forum have been saying how good he is. Also very interesting that Ernie thinks he can play A-league this season. If you are good enough you are old enough. Boyd was the same age and played seniors.....he wasn't a hit but neither was he completely out of his depth(in a disfunctional team) Lots of competition for attacking slots this year......a few people are going to be disappointed

I wish we could all gush about ernie without trying to bring ricki down at the same time.

Ricki is the man and will always be a legend to me. And I'm very impressed with Ernie thus far. Those are not mutually exclusive things.

Yep, agreed. Ricki was great for years - to the fans, to the team - and deserves more respect from most on this forum. The environment got stale and he ran out of ideas last season - but, keep in mind, so did Ernie Merrick at the Victory.

This situation is quite funny really. Some dude called WangChung comes out of no where and tells us we are all wrong/stupid and provokes a reaction from us then he just fucks off.
If I didn't know any better, he is one of us who has made a new account. A double agent type.

he's someone who gets his stats off fifa. Still believes Ronaldinho is a top 3 greatest all time player and thinks Rojas plays well for the all whites.
