f**k it - competition for players of Porter's class is always going to be tough.

We gave it a good shot - time to move on to plan B.

does that mean they ahve offered him a three year deal though? or does that mean that he is contracted to them again with no more say in the matte? where to from here?

As I understand it Hartlepool have to make him an offer on terms and conditions no less than he is currently on. He has until June 17 to respond to the club's offer which can be increased, but not be reduced or withdrawn, up to that date.

The whole situation is set up for Porter to play us and Hartlepool off against each other. To avoid being played I assume we have given him a fixed amount of time to accept or decline our offer and then we walk away.

Unfortunately I think it's over - he clearly wants to stay at Hartlepool. Bring on plan B.

We (Hartlepool) have exercised a one year contract extension, previously enclosed in Joel's contract, extremely pleased that we'll still have Skippy for another season at least. joejoejoeallon2008-05-09 23:55:08

Starting to look like we were never anything other than Porter's insurance policy in case Hartlepool didn't extend.

The Club are very pleased to announce they have taken up options on the contracts of the following players who we believe are key members in building a successful squad for the 2008/2009 Centenary campaign:

Willie Boland
James Brown
Gary Liddle
Michael Mackay
Andy Monkhouse
Michael Nelson
Joel Porter
Matty Robson
Martin Young

Now onto plan 'B'

Hang on guys. you seem to think just because the club have used the option on his contract that he cant transfer? Were the nix only going to pursue him if it was a free transfer?. also the player is over 28 with less than 2 years on his current contract so he can buy out his contract for the cost of his wages and walk away.

I laughed at xcellent's post -superb second line (not deep in analysis - but got the point across)

but agree A47, if he'd signed for us he'd be our "big nosed prick" - and we'd all sing songs about the wonders of the man

I have to admit...that was my first reaction. But now I have cooled down a bit.

This is the real world folks...Trying to get quality players to transfer half way around the world to a new club in a fledgling competition is always going to be tough. In five or six years time when the A-League has truely developed and there is a new TV deal, there will be lots more money sloshing around and it will be easier to attract quality players.

I always thought it would be difficult to recruit out of the UK, especially for a half decent striker. The wages are too high and every player dreams of getting spotted by a Premier league club. NZ is out of sight, too far away for many.

So what now for the Phoenix. In terms of player availibility, cost and ease of recruitment then the player factory of Brazil is an obvious option. But as we saw last season it is a minefield....I don't think we will go there again. Preseason games start next month. It is hard to imagine there is a quality experianced striker sitting out there waiting for a call from the Phoenix.

So unless Tony P has a rabbit that he is going to pull out of the hat soon ,we may have to make do with the current squad. I personally think they should throw Costa in the deep end and play him as the number two striker with Smeltz. If you are good enough then you are old enough. We do have plenty of attacking options. Moving Gao or Hearfield forward are also possibilities.

Not really suprised.

Tbh a very injury prone League 1 player wasn't really making me jump up and down with excitement anyway.

I'm all for playing Costa too, with Draper and/or Coveny on the bench as impact player backup.

If Roy Krishna is keen, why not sign him too?
We still have 2 overseas spots left, so we can take a Fijian ...

I think Joel Porter is making the right decision (for himself), can't say I blame him ...

I think the comments on recruiting out of the UK are spot on - until the A-League has developed further (profile & $s) we will be limited to recruiting players nearing the end of their UK career and looking to extend their career for a few more years in the relatively less demanding A-League (particularly from a number of games in a season perspective).

I don't agree we should make do with the current squad - the challenge is where to find affordable, good foreign players - they are there e.g. Daniel and Gao. I think China and South America have to be a good options. Clearly scouts on the ground and good player agent networks will be important and these will take a year or so to build.

No disrespect to Costa who I think has a great future with a couple more years of experience but bottom line is we are screwed if Smeltz gets injured and we are still without a specialist right back.

I have every confidence Tony P and Ricki are on to it.

Yeah I hope this means that Costa gets more of a run - though I think i'd prefer him on the wing.

yeh, cole sounds a bit of a rogue, but I wouln't mind seeing what he can do on the park, regarding rumours - it was as good as any (though I expect he'd want more than his fair share of our salary cap)

on a different matter, it's interesting to see that we look like keeping a spot open for a signing later in the season - makes sense

Never said he was a bad player because he looks good. So shut up you tosspot, if he did sign again for Hartlepool he would have f**ked us overfor around for 3 months (wasting time on pursuing our other options) then bailed out. Which is a sh*t thing to do

Not at all. Football players (especially those not on top division wages) have a limited professional career, and at 28 Porter is getting into the later part of his. It is perfectly rational to compare different offers to try and get your wages raised by putting pressure on your club. I'd have done the same thing in Porter's shoes and so would you. Anyway, it looks like it's the club who have taken an option to extend his contract, not actually him. He hasn't even done anything if I read the situation correctly, hence why Tony P has come on and said it isn't all over yet. He may still be able to buy out his contract or transfer for an increased fee. KTBW2008-05-11 13:20:11

I'd like to see the Phoenix look for some African players.  Africa is a goldmine of talent, and I'm sure the French and Belgian football leagues would agree with me on that one.

I think Africa would be good because quite a few of their players have that physical presence coupled with strength and speed to burn.  And now that Aloisi has retired we need a few physical players.

Have you looked into this option at all Tony P?

That is an xcellent point. Just being in the shoes of the Nix, we would have preffered a swift decision

A few names that have been released Jabo Ibehre from Orient and Geoff Horsfield from Sheff Utd have both been released on frees and could be worth a look.

Good points.....maybe we are being a little harsh on Mr Porter.

The facts so far are: Porter has obviously expressed an interest in coming to the Phoenix, Hartepool have evoked a clause in his contract extending his stay by another season and Tony P has said its not all over. We have no idea about what's in Porter's current contract so its difficult for us to comment on Porters legal position.

It may be a simple matter of a player wanting to transfer but just having to work through all the ramifications of the contract system. In the mean time he is being professional and keeping his mouth shut .

What is unknown is whether Porter (or more probably his agent) was straight with the Phoenix.

If Porter's contractual status was honestly (i.e who held what right of renewal under what circumstances) conveyed to the Nix then fine - we had our eyes open. If we were misled and were, in effect, Porter's insurance policy for non renewal by Hartlepool then that's not fine.

The issue isn't that Porter is trying, very understandably, to maximise his income and choose the best offer for him, the issue is whether or not he and his agent acted with integrity.

Hopefully all will be revealed when Tony P is on the total football show tonight.

I've just finished reading the entire thread and I've been pissing myself laughing!!  Boys, it's Joel Porter, not Wayne Rooney, if we don't get him there will be 15 players in the football league without a deal that'll do equally as good a job.  If we do get him, let's make sure we don't have too high expectations.  It would be great to see him in a Phoenix shirt, but remember he's come from a 3rd division side that has just had a very average season.  No disrespect intended.
