As best I can fathom the English football player transfer system Hartlepool will have 3 types of contracted players; A) players who are already contracted for 08/09, B) players who are out of contract but who they want to retain for 08/09 and C) players who are out of contract who they want to release.

I understand each club produces retain and release lists which classifies players, out of contract, in to either B) or C). If a player is on the retain list the club then offers them terms and conditions for a contract renewal but I understand that the player is free to accept or reject the offer.

Hartlepool are apparently going to issue their retain and release list this week. If Porter is on the retain list then I guess he may be required to / want to wait for Hartlepool's offer before deciding whether or not he wants to move on. He has until June 17 to respond to the club's offer which can be increased, but not be reduced or withdrawn, up to that date. Hopefully, for us, he is on the release list.

Mulligan is on Port Vales release list.

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

Sort of scraping the bottom of the barrel when we are considering a striker who could not do the business for Perth!!!  Sounds no better than Brownlie.

Hope this does not mean the Porter deal is looking shaky. Hartepool must have finished their season, whats everyone waiting for?. Every day without conformation makes it less likely IMO.

Love to hear those golden words from Terry P .... " Phoenix have a major announcement coming up"

Mind you apparently the Milan transfer for Ronaldinho has fallen through.....come on Terry P....just sell about 10 of your tower blocks and you might have enough for a down payment for his transfer fee!!!!

Tony P - does the announcing stuff

Terry S- does the  millions stuff

Alright....I'm dislectic...K.O

An article from John Ritson at 442 today about our potential signing of Porter. Sounds like it isnt going to be allowed to drag on forever.

The Hartlepool United striker is out of contract at Victoria Park and is weighing up his options over his next move.

There is an offer on the table from Wellington but it is not going to remain there indefinitely.

Chief executive Tony Pignata told au.fourfourtwo.com: I believe Joel is talking to the club (Hartlepool) this week as their league has just finished over there.

He knows of our interest and hopefully he decides that this is where he wants to play his football next season.

However, while the Phoenix understands any players desire to mull over a contract offer, there is also a desire at Westpac Stadium to have an answer sooner rather than later.

Pignata said: I would like an answer within the next two weeks, certainly.
And the CEO added that it wasnt a case of all the eggs being placed in the Porter basket. He said: There is a Plan B and a Plan C if you like.

"As a club you are always exploring different options so yes, we have spoken to various people. You need to examine all sorts of factors such as availability and cost. hepatitis2008-05-08 13:12:42

Good on ya, Tony P. This saga has been going on for ages, Porter must know what he wants to do by now. Let's get an answer and move on, one way or another.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

You would have to think that the delay is because Porter is still waiting on Hartepool to make a counter offer. He has a Phoenix offer on the table already. As we know these things are all about $$$. These players are professional...they have a short time to maximise their income. So  its understandable that he will chase the higher $$$$.

Later on if he does sign on with the Phoenix we will hear the normal platitudes about making a fresh start in an up and coming club and how its exciting to be playing in the a-League etc etc but really its the money that talks first.

I think Tony's 2 weeks timetable for Porter to make a decision is fair enough - for both the Nix and Porter. Hartlepool's retained list (players they will offer a new contract to) is due out any day. If Porter is on it then fair enough he has reasonable time to make a decision on which offer he will accept.

It will all be somewhat simpler if he is not on Hartlepool's retained list i.e. he is released.

Major signing must be Stephen Carr, recently released by Newcastle United!

(not really)

I think the way the club handles itself in the transfer market gives us all a lot of confidence. They (Tony P in particular) are really doing it right with casing out the right sort of players and paying attention to detail. Last year was a bun fight and no ones fault. This year you can see the true professionalism coming through!

Hartlepool will release their retained list tomorrow - we need Porter to not be on it.

If he's on it we either get in to a bidding war with Hartlepool or go to plan B.

I dont think we will get into a bidding war. I reckon once our bid is down, its up to Hartlepool to match it. He has said he wants to stay, but only if he gets 3 years. if he doesnt get that, then he will be here in a couple of weeks, otherwise we will go straight to plans "b" "c" & "d"

Oh boy !!!  Are we doing puns again....

I hope Porter nose what he's in for coming to play for the Phoenix. Still if he can sniff out a few  goals this season we will definitely have our nose in front by seasons end.

I think he means Krishna (or perhaps Trentham) is better than Porter but if we sign both it will complete the best squad in the league. Am I on the right track HN?

Edit: Turns out I am right...ish.
