I've just finished reading the entire thread and I've been pissing myself laughing!!  Boys, it's Joel Porter, not Wayne Rooney, if we don't get him there will be 15 players in the football league without a deal that'll do equally as good a job.  If we do get him, let's make sure we don't have too high expectations.  It would be great to see him in a Phoenix shirt, but remember he's come from a 3rd division side that has just had a very average season.  No disrespect intended.

Not all of them have Australian passports.
We brought in 3 overseas players inside three months last year, where there's a will there's a way.  Or am I completely off kilter and I'm missing something about overseas player rules?

We're allowed four foreign players. They will presumably need to get permission to earn wages in Aus (and/or NZ) but I think that's about it. Not having an Australian (or New Zealand) passport is no biggie.

In which case Joel Porter isn't that much of a biggy either.

According to Tony P on the TFS tonight, Porter wants to come , he's sold his house, the manager there knows Porter wants out, but the club has invoked a further year's option in his contract

Phoenix are pursuing the matter with the Aussie and Englsih PFAs

hold all dissing of Joel  and his nose for goal

Just listened to Tony P on the  radio sports footy show.....he shed quite a lot of light on the Porter situation.

Well I think a few of us owe Joel Porter and apology. According to Tony P, Porter is desperate to leave Hartepool. He has an offer on his house. He wants to come to the Phoenix. He's been dicked around by Hartepool....inforcing an option to keep him.  Why you would want to keep a player who is committted to leave is beyond me!!!!

So now the Phoenix have to go through the various Associations, FIFA to try ans get their man.

Apologies to Mr Porter. Seems Hartlepool are the dicks

Also interesting to hear Tony say that regarding the three places still open, the club are after 2 strikers and will probably keep the third spot for the October window

I doubt the respective dimensions of the man's nose will change, regardless of which hemisphere he plays in

I just hope it works out - if he wants to come and the club (clearly) wants him, then I hope it can get sorted.

i also didnt see the point in that
we have Covs,Costa,Drapes and smeltzy already

Why more

Maybe they are looking at Costa as more of an attacking mid. Draper isn't really up to A-League quite yet and Covs is in his twighlight years (although still capable). If we have room for another striker it can only promote competition and increase performance within the team! And who knows we could unleash a gem

This is sooo frustrating - the guy obviously really wants to come and we badly want him to come.

As frustrating as it is I don't think Hartlepool are to be blame - it sounds like they are simply exercising a contractual option. What is still unclear is whether or not Porter has any say in accepting, or not, the contract extension - Tony P, not surprisingly, doesn't know the details of the extension clause.

Hopefully it can be worked through but Hartlepool have obviously had plenty of experience of writing contracts so, if it is enforceable, I suspect it will come down to whether or not they want to "handcuff" Porter for the next season.

Because last season only one of them scored enough goals to make the side finals contenders.

You Got to admit though, alot of penaltys were scored By Smeltz but were Drawn by Covs

so even though he may have passed his peak,he is still capable
Costa didnt get so many chances and the one starting chance he did get he worked it well

Drapes the same although i still think a little sub par

Absolutely he is still capable, but 12 months he's older and the legs may not be up to it.

We've lost Brownlie which would leave a HUGE load on Smeltz's shoulders and if he's injured you are banking on the oldest legs in the league and the second youngest (last season) who is unproven at this level...

Smeltzy scored one penalty. Daniel was the penalty taker last season.

Well this certainly is a turn up for the books, I had heard a few mutterings that Joel wanted the move back home and was aware that his house was/is being sold.

I don't think we are too blame like you say, Joel agreed a two year contract with the option of an extra year which is pretty much how we do things, this can be triggered at the discrection of and solely by HUFC, Joel get's no say in the matter as he already signed the contract and agreed to the extra year option, if we want him for an extra year, he stays, the situation as far as I can see is that Joel is now contracted to HUFC for another 12 months and if the move to Wellington is to go ahead a fee will need to be paid.

Joel is a good player on his day, quick, surprisingly good in the air with an eye for goal, injuries, injuries and injuries have halted him in recent times though, I hope he stays, but if he goes, good luck, there'll be no bitter feelings toward him.

Do you think Hartlepool are gambling on getting a transfer fee out of Porter? Can Phoenix afford the fee and Porter's salary? Hartlepool could be stuck with a player who doesn't want to be there.

It seems we either buy Joel out of his contract with Hartlepool or wait a year.

Tony P said last night (Radio Sports football hour) he was looking for 2 strikers. If we can sign one very good striker for this season and pick up Joel next season I think we will be in very good shape.

Smletz + new striker + Costa + Covs will be a good line up this year.

Porter coming in for Covs next year - no disrespect to Covs but I think this year will be his last.

Does anyone know whether a transfer fee counts toward the salary cap?

From what I've heard it does.

Whatever the case I hope it's sorted soon, everyone could do without this dragging on throughout the summer time, if he wants to leave and our owners believe it is in their best interests to let him leave then so be it, he is a dependable League 1 player, but there are numerous players (at a fee) that we could replace him with.

That's a big "IF", Whitby Boy!

Realistically, what chance do we have of picking up a "really good" one with all the competition out there lookin for the same thing, and probably with bigger pockets if we're talking clubs beyond the A-League?

And, if I understand Tony P from last night's I/V, the Nix are no longer looking for a right back to fill the squad, so where does that leave Mully?

so if we are going 2 sign 2 strikers who else do you think they have in mind Krishna? i see bruce djite is going 2 be released what are your thoughts on him?

I believe the idea behind releasing Djite would be to let him go to Europe but if we could sign him I'd be salivating.

I might also put my rep (however small it is) on the line and suggest possibly Totori as a squad striker?

Allegedly (and embarassing for amateur football) he's earning more at Waitak ... plus Krishna would appear to be better. Hard News2008-05-12 17:08:21

I doubt that now that he is going to the club world cup that he would want to leave anyway.

Reading the Latest News post about Porter sounds like the only way Porter is coming to the Phoenix is if we cough up $$$ for a transfer fee!!!! Thats not going to happen, so Porter stays for another season and we get him next year to replace a retiring Coveny.

I suppose Porter could throw his toys out of the cot and threaten to score heaps of own goals....still don't figure why a club would want to hold someone who obviously does'nt want to be there!!!

Kind of feel sorry for Joel...getting rid of his house and committing his family to moving to NZ and now having to stay. Unless there are more twists to come in this tale!!!!!

The whole thing has turned out to be quite a saga....hope he's a good enough player to justify the hassle!!

If he was given a verbal agreement earlier in the season something could happen, similar situation to Hearfield in that case. Especially if it led to him selling his house.

It seems to me like Hartlepool just used the option to make sure they got some money out of Porter, either through a transfer fee or Porter buying out his contract himself.

Not sure about that CriticalLemon. They could probably guess a transfer would likely kill the deal so they probably do genuinely want him to stay. If he is as good as some people on this forum are saying then why would they want to let him go?
