Seems remarkably logical to me - or have I been in Aussie too long?

Why do you think Marquee's aren't included in salary cap's???? That was one of the key ideas, that you may get some high profile publicity machines (DW) who will get the league, and the teams in the papers and on the silly box - even though their on-field contribution may not be their optimum...

Personally I think he'd still have it on the pitch. I watched the League one playoff last night and I have to be honest it's still a lot higher than the A-League at that level. Some of it may have been the intensity of the games and the fact that those guys play 45-50 matches per year but both Leeds and Carlisle were excellent footballing side that would be very competitivie in the A-League. Andy Cole would still have it there and as such I think he'd go well for the Phoenix, especially with the midfield we have that SHOULD be able to fix him plenty of chances. Plus there is Ronaldunno's point which is completely valid, so long as you can marry the two (on field and off-field a la Dwight York) then I say go for it! All hypothetical and fanciful but that's what the internet is for!
I had the pleasure of watching Glen Hoddle play for Swindon when he was 36. Everyone said the same about him. "He was in the dusk of his career, he was in it for the money, didn't have the legs anymore".
He was absolute class, without a doubt the best "footballer" in the league that season. Anyone of Andy Coles age and experience that still has the desire to play (Teddy Sherringham as opposed to Neil Ruddock) would bring a lot of quality to the team.
I'd love Swindon Town to sign Andy Cole for a year or two (even if he is City scum!).

Andy Cole would be good but don't we want someone who will stay with the club for more han 1 year 2 form a long term partnership with smeltz?
I'm not sure I care about the next few seasons and long term partnerships. Instant gratification is what we need, if we finish bottom of the league again this year it will be difficult to move forward from that.
I'd love to see someone of Coles caliber come in (even if for one season) and bang in 15-20!
Let's worry about the season after next this time next year.

Phoenix Marquee Signing
The Phoenix are pleased to announce the signing of former England and Manchester United striker Andy Cole to a 1 year, $1 million dollar contract.
In announcing the signing today, Phoenix executives couldn't help the effusive praise they have for investor DanielsLeftBall who put up the funding for this signing.

The last couple of news posts are not that optimistic. The DomPost " the Phoenix chances of signing Porter are slipping day by day"
Plus Tony P says that its proving very difficult to sign a quality striker...and that Plan B involves signing a current A-League striker. Any rumours about who that might be? But he also concedes that there has not been great movement in that area either.
All in all its not looking that great....hopefully there will be a break through in the Porter front.

really the only A league strike options(released players) are Jerry Karpeh, Simon Lynch, Dez Giraldi. not looking so good. phoenix options are Bertos or hearfield. maybe daniel or gao but things arent looking to promising... Man_utd_fan2008-05-14 18:36:54

I think there may be an element of falsehood in this statement Mr. News.

Have you seen Krishna play? seems to be a lot of people banging on about him, but how many are basing this on what other's have said?
Brosque would be a fantastic signing IMO, would be the perfect partner for smeltzy. I have a sneaky feeling it would be ol' Kwasnik, but dear god I hope not.
It won't be anyone outstanding, because surely we'd have pursued the good'uns (eg ball sack hitter) before Porter

Come on Tony P...either burst our Andy Cole shaped bubble or give us another whim of hope!
I still think Krishna is alot more realistic though....despite somewhat lacking in glamour

Won't be Andy Cole.
That's because Thierry Henry has signed isn't Tony.
C'mon you've got to tell them some time......

Brosque can be frustrating in terms of his finishing but he does seem to have a good awareness of where players are and often has the ability to knock the ball into their path
can't see Sydney letting him go
In a few years, when City have finished with Deano perhaps he could come here

He's certainly on the outer at Hull,
but to be honest i was a bit underwhelmed by him for sydney - certainly not out of his depth but it does appear that injuries and time in the lower leagues have taken their toll, he was touted as a bit special when he was young

Yup he was. Read that in a 442 mag, where it included all the 'should have been' good players.
But, he is a class player and would be awesome for the Nix. However, Tony said 'another a-league club' and he's not really at sydney is he...

Just imagine DLB, the skills and tactics one could learn from Henry

I think Santalab is a realistic name to throw up. Think he had great potential too. And with Sydney having Brosque, Bridge and Aloisi. He wouldn't be seeing much game time. But if Brosque were true that ould be awesome. If it is from a current A-League team it would have to be Sydney. But let's just hope we get one of them (Porter or the A-League "Plan B"). but two would be great.

Watched Phoenix 11 v 11 yesterday, Coveney has still got it and Draper seems to be coming on and gaining more confidence, throw Costa and Hearfield along with smeltz in to the mix and im not overly concerned - the greedy side of me wants a big name striker but either way i think we'l be allright
