I would imagine they'd want more than one performance on which to decide to sign a player... especially as it's highly likely said player will play a key role if TL goes bye-bye's...

Seems the early signs are positive tho, lets hope he's the biz

looks like he set up the ball for Giraldi to muck up for the 3rd Phoenix goal by Gao!! He'll have a lot to live up to if lochy goes but could be an adequate squad player, hope to see him on SKY TV on wednesday night!!! Come on SKY TV!!!!!

Shannon Cole. I know he is about to sign for Sydney but they are stalling, probably due to striker issues. We should sneak him away from under their noses

Phoenix search for new blood document
Sep 24, 2008
TVNZ
The Wellington Phoenix are hoping to sign two players in the coming weeks to bolster their ailing A-League football squad.

The Phoenix sit at the foot of the competition ladder, with just two points from five matches.

Phoenix owner Terry Serepisos says they are in talks with two players, one of whom they're hoping to sign as a short-term "guest" player.

Serepisos says they are in negotiations and there's potential to strengthen the team.

Serepisos is 100 percent behind Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert and isn't contemplating sacking him after just three losses.

I can bet the guest player is Elliot, no doubt

Guest Players... Why not look to a Marquee?

ive got a song that wont take long, Adelaide are rubbish.. the second verse is same as the first.. ADELAIDE ARE RUBBISH

Could possibly be a look to getting Elliot in as a guest player, with a look to making him marquee if he deserves it?

Elliott as a marquee? No.

Not saying I want it, putting it out as a possibility. It is not like he doesn't fill out what is expected as a marquee (eg very similar to El**ch). However we all know how fantastic he was...

More likely that Elliot would want to be a guest player.  A 7 week stint would finish close to the January transfer window.  That is if he wants to try get back to England.

Elliot would be a good guest player. His passing and decision making was a standout at the Olympics, and for the All Whites recently. Just what we need in a midfield bereft of ideas at the moment.

And hopefully the 2nd player they are mentioning is a striker.

I'm guessing the second player would be Brockie. What's the rule on how many appearances a guest player can make?

Apparently it's 7 weeks, so I guess 7 appearances..

Sign them both up, we don't really have many other options that wouldn't involve a time consuming search.

Anyone got any sources for this info? Or are they just educated guesses

Guesses, don't know how educated they are...but the reality is Elliott's out of contract, Brockie caught the eye at the Olympics, and it's pretty hard to come up with another 2 names from anywhere that could be realistically signed at this stage.

I'm hoping neither Elliott or Brockie are the Marquee player.Having Elliot as a guest player makes sense. If we sign up Brockie, doesn't that give us a full roster so we can't sign a Marquee? (I may be wrong here but I'm sure one of you will tell me)

One would be signed as a guest player, the other as marquee (or one of our current players may be upgraded to marquee...smeltz?)

Allegedly

Would love it if the Nix pulled one out of the bag and signed a totally unexpected real marquee

I'd settle for two strikers.

With some serious "punch" up front we might have a dog's show of getting out of this hole we're digging.

I would only expect to see Brockie on a deal to the end of the season and Elliot on a short term contract, that may eventuate to a full time contract next season if nothing opens up for Elliot and he proves to be what we are missing in the midfield. No marque out of those two. There are also players from OZ state leagues

My understanding is that a marquee is part of the 23 man maximum.

A marquee is part of the 23 player maximum...but their wages are outside of the salary cap

A guest player i believe is outside of the 23 player maximum...not sure if they have to be included within the salary cap however

Allegedly

So if it is Brockie and Elliott, then there's no marquee player for us this season?
Permalink Permalink

Unless we need to promote one of our players into the marquee position to fit the new player under the salary cap...

Why a marquee player????????? All of the marquee players in the league have been utter rubbish, with 1 expection Dwight Yorke, other than him complete and utter rubbish the lot. Why waste money on a player like that. Look for someone who will make a useuful contribution towards the team.

Have we spent that much money that we'd need to do this?

I didin't get that impression from the club talk during the recruiting period.

Archie Thompson does a half decent job... much as I dislike him.

Well I hope we announce who it is after we beat the Bling so it doesn't look as bad. I still think we have the players . . . of course it is more like the team gel that worries me. Having a few more players may mask the real problems, if there is any. But good to know there is some effort to sign a couple of reasons for the fans to turn to the games in a better frame of mind.

Resign Smeltzy as marquee, surely that would be enough to keep him at the club. If he's looking at moving, and it sounds like he is, then marquee would trump all the other clubs. Unless they looked at signing him as their marquee...

Could just go the U23 marque, what's it $150,000 not included in the salary cap?
