Porter poised for Glitter Strip
2 October 2008 | 20:00 - SBS

Gold Coast United are on the brink of luring English-based one-time fringe Socceroo Joel Porter to the Glitter Strip, six years after he left in search of the big time.

The proven predator, who has four Socceroos caps, is out of contract with third tier Hartlepool at the end of the season and wants to wuit the post-industrial wasteland of England's north-east for sunnier climes.

United's head coach Miron Bleiberg, a long-time admirer of Porter's work ethic and eye for goal during his days with Melbourne Knights and Sydney Olympic in the defunct national league, is all but sold on the striker.

But he will not make a final decision until watching Porter, 29, in the flesh playing for his club at home to Yeovil on December 6, as part of his odyssey to England to snap up displaced Aussie talent.

"Porter's at the right age. I've seen a lot of him down the years, but my rule is that I won't sign any player I haven't watched in person, so that's what I'll be doing with him,'' explained Bleiberg.

"It shows that we are serious about signing players still near, or in the primes, rather than foreigners on the wrong side of 30 who have nothing left to prove.

''All the indications are he's still very good. He scores regularly in a tough competition and it's not easy to be a striker anywhere.

"He's left-footed, he can play centre-forward, behind the strikers and on the wing.

"I don't see him as a squad player if I sign him it will be as a starter.''

Despite missing large chunks of the last three seasons through injury, Porter, who cannot officially enter into negotiations with clubs until January 1, has banged in 43 goals in 123 appearances for the club he joined in 2003 - with four in 11 games so far this season.

Bleiberg has further bolstered the club's squad with former Wellington Phoenix defender Kristian Rees, who is currently with state league outfit Adelaide City.

And talks are looming with Wellington's Kiwi international striker Shane Smeltz who is also on the hit list of Adelaide United after beginning the season with a flurry of goals for his struggling club

Oh FFS

This Gold Coast mob look like they are going to be the Gretna of the A League. Buy anything with two legs which is available. Farking hell. I hope Tony P and Ricki weren't putting all their striking eggs in the Joel Porter basket for next season.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

What happened with Felipe? Where's he playing now? Wasn't he signed by the old proposed GC franchise when people thought they were going to be in the comp this season?

Wonder why Royce Brownlie hasn't got a mention yet. He's playing footie in Brisbane at the moment, won the Golden Boot in their State League.

I didn't think he got much of a look-in myself, he'd be a YF legend if his shot had gone in against melbs...

IMHO, he's a legend for that rugby tackle during that match with Newcastle last season

He's a darn decent player alright.  Bad decision to let him go, and Oska, I agree about if that shot had gone in.

possibly, but he seemed to have a knack of running the wrong lines whenever he came on and ending up too close too whichever of our wide players he'd followed out onto the flanks

Kristian Rees has signed with GC if you didn't already know.

good signing actually. really appreciated Rees's work at the Phoenix last year.

il liked Ree's attitude and his presence in defence, and his classic shirt pull in the box away at CCM

but wise YFers reckoned he lacked a bit of whatever he didn't have enough of

I thought Rees was pants.  He's too slow to play RB and there are a lot better players in the centre.  He had a good effect for about 2 or 3 games and then he went back to true form.  Who in our defenders would you swap for him?

yep, but what he lacked in speed he made up for in grim determination ( and baldness)

oh, yeah and that hint of imminent (sp?)  brutality that lay just below the suface

Most of us in the fever zone would outsprint him, and although he was good physically, he isn't good enough for a starting position in any A-league side.

He was also a master of the sly foul whenever anyone looked like turning him and was a hell of a shirt puller...

Rather a shirt puller than a shirt lifter

I would doubt GC or NQ would announce any signings of current A-League players at this stage of the season.
Ideally they'd wait til the end to keep the fans of current clubs on side with the players in question.

Gao rules out return to Chinese soccer league
Created: 2008-9-25 0:38:09
Author:Zhang Liuhao

GAO Leilei, who plays for the Wellington Phoenix FC in New Zealand, is looking at European leagues, rather than China, to ply his trade at the end of the Kiwi soccer season and before hanging up his boots.

"I hope to play for a European club for a season or two before I call it a day," Gao said. "I want to experience the superb professional environment in Europe again to enrich my career."

The 28-year-old said he did not think of native China as an option unlike most European or Latin American players who prefer to end their careers with clubs or in countries where they started off.

"The only reason I left China was to get away from Chinese soccer," said Gao, who played for Beijing Guoan FC for eight years until 2006.

So disillusioned was Gao with the soccer setup back home that he even preferred to take a hefty pay cut.

The Beijing native said that most players in China spent too much time and energy in handling relations with coaches and club officials and currying favors to win more playing time.

Players often formed cliques in a team and these small groups often edged out each other, hurting team unity, he said, adding, that such long-standing internal discords reduced players' concentration on the job and their career development.

He said his straightforward personality made it difficult for him to survive in the Chinese professional soccer. Gao also noted that it was possibly the reason why China had not achieved any notable improvement since it introduced professional soccer league in 1994.

"I may return to China to look after my mother. Maybe I will go to a school to teach soccer to children, but I won't set foot on the turf of a professional Chinese soccer club," he said.

Gao played for Finnish club MyPa in the Finnish Premier Division last year before joining Wellington Phoenix in March. Phoenix is the only professional club in New Zealand and the team takes part in the 8-team A-League, in which the other seven teams are all Australian clubs.

His contract with Phoenix will end in January when the season concludes. So far he hasn't had any offers but his agent is working on his wish to play in Europe, Gao said.

He said Phoenix had offered him a three-year contract but he signed for one year.

The midfielder was impressed by the time he spent with MyPa in Finland but he said the Finnish league was not of the same level as the other European leagues like the English Premier League and the Italian Serie A.

Gao said many players in the Finnish league previously played for the top five European leagues. Their stamina and speed were on the wane because of their age, but their skills and abilities to read matches were still top class.

Phoenix was still chasing its first win of the season, which ends in January. But despite that he said soccer was slowly making inroads in New Zealand where rugby and cricket remained the top draw.

Like Smeltz and every player in the world.

Yawn.

The way he is playing for Hartlepool he'd be an idiot to commit to the A-League so early before next season as he's showing Championship form.

I wouldn't swap him for anyone at the moment. But let's not forget that last year it was a different story. No McKain, Durante, Siggy, Mully et cetera...that's why I was really stoked he was in the squad last year.

I think he'll do OK with GC.

As for Porter, don't really know what to say. It seemed that he genuinely wanted to come here last year but wasn't allowed so can't blame him too much. However, who really knows?

According to the news on home page, Joel scored a hattrick as 'pool came back from 3-0 down......

Don't think he'll be leaving UK in a hurry now as that's 7 goals he's banged in so far this season....

Tony P, get on the phone.....quick smart!!

I think that you will find that Porter signed a letter of intent to play with the Phoenix next year. We all know how he was going to come here but was shafted by Hartypool. Depends now how binding that contract is. He is now hotter property than he was ,with GC etc sniffing around.

One thing that we know now is how much bullsh*t is chucked around when it comes to player transfers. Believe he is coming when you see him in a Phoenix shirt.

I'm loving North Queensland.  They seem to just be getting on with it instead of disrupting every other side and player in the league.

GC piss me off. They bang on about a world class team yet they've signed Fitzsimmons and Kristian Rees. One is not A-league quality, the other is a fringe player at most. Hardly inspiring.

Still, they might make a quality team yet, with the billions of dollars their manager has, it would be no surprise to me if they snag a few retiring players from Europe.

Apparently the brochure sent to all the players was appetizing...
