An observation - to maintain and develop the standard of football and introduce new "personalities" to the league the challenge for the A-league will be to source new talent at a rate faster than it expands.
2 new teams next year is about 46 new players in the league - if the league is not to become a "player go round" and the standard is not to drop that's 46 new to the league A-league standard players - a big ask
Exactly.....and another two new teams the year after is 94 new players to find in two seasons. OK so I would imagine there would be 16 foreign players at least. Possible more, as I think the number of imports available to the new teams is 5. So that makes 20 imports....still leaves 74 players to find in Australia.
It will mean the Oz state leagues will get plundered. Also anyone currently coming off contract from a current A-League team will get lots of offers. This is important for the Phoenix. The likes of Dodd, Paston, Johnson, Kwasnik are all coming off contract and have not yet re-signed. WE need to immediately sign those players we want to keep. We also need to extend the contracts of valuable players who have a year still to go.....the likes of McCain and co.
I like the idea of a 12 team league but there will be some dilution of standard...there are just not enough players to go around. Also getting imports is a real hit and miss affair....for every gem there are quite a few duds.
