I agree it would be likely we could guarentee him a starting spot and who cares if he dives if he gets us goals?

An observation - to maintain and develop the standard of football and introduce new "personalities" to the league the challenge for the A-league will be to source new talent at a rate faster than it expands.

2 new teams next year is about 46 new players in the league - if the league is not to become a "player go round" and the standard is not to drop that's 46 new to the league A-league standard players - a big ask.

Exactly.....and another two new teams the year after is 94 new players to find in two seasons. OK so I would imagine there would be 16 foreign players at least. Possible more, as I think the number of imports available to the new teams is 5. So that makes 20 imports....still leaves 74 players to find in Australia.

It will mean the Oz state leagues will get plundered. Also anyone currently coming off contract from a current A-League team will get lots of offers. This is important for the Phoenix. The likes of Dodd, Paston, Johnson, Kwasnik are all coming off contract and have not yet re-signed. WE need to immediately sign those players we want to keep. We also need to extend the contracts of valuable players who have a year still to go.....the likes of McCain and co.

I like the idea of a 12 team league but there will be some dilution of standard...there are just not enough players to go around. Also getting imports is a real hit and miss affair....for every gem there are quite a few duds.

For me this ties in with the whole idea that after 2011, we might only be allowed Kiwis as imports. I cannot imagine as the state leagues get plundered (as you say), and the quality stagnates or possibly deteriorates, that there won't be even more import spots open up, making our situation possibly easier. More Kiwi lads are likely top get picked up in Oz also. I can't imagine that there are 70 Manny Muscats or Shannon Cole's floating round in Oz to get picked up.

Just a thought, and trying to be positive on our future.

Second that Danny is fantastic.

Mostly against NZ teams..

Don't think he would be great without a Fred, Archie or Hernandez around him. He's a terrific finisher and poacher but he barely ever makes his own goals. Kinda like Smeltz in that regard I suppose.

His ability as a target man is great, and if you actually watch him play he makes a lot of play for those arounds him.

I wouldn't mind that actually, sure he's a iving c**t but given how much we struggled getting any sort of proper striker during preseason I wouldn't want the club being picky about things like that, we need goalscorers nd here's one who just said he's annoyed with his club and is already in the A-League

Cristiano's a good player but I'm a bit wary of players who so openly criticise their coach, saying they feel 'angry', etc. No matter how frustrated he is he's not doing himself any favours, and it's the sort of thing that can stuff up a team's stability.

Lucky none of our players indulge in that sort of carry-on. Eh, Vaughan?

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

SMH today reports that you're signing Chris Triantis, our 21yr old CM captain of our youth team.

Great player. If it's true he's only really leaving us because we already have plenty of contracted options at CM for next year. Definitely HAL quality. Like Ferrante, or probably more like Johnson - but better.

We don't need another CM.

I guess we could get one to replace Johnson..

Dodd leaving would most likely mean McKain moving back to CB.

Or signing a new CB and leaving McKain in the midfield, where he has been immense.

Don't disagree with you at all, I'm just answering the question. I'm a big fan of McKain's performances as a midfield.

Triantis is an improvement on any of your present CMs. He's not really a DM though.

If the Phoenix beat Sydney and our midfield bosses yours, and this palyer can't get into the Sydney Team then how is he an improvement on our present CMs...

He hasn't had a chance for the Sydney first team.

Never heard of him before today but he seems very highly rated by everyone on the Sydney forum - so that has to mean something.

or the other option is that he is a midfield cover player. You would think Brown and McKain is a fairly dynamic duo at this stage.

He would join (depending on who leaves) Plodder, Johnson, Ferrante as midfield options, depending on what formation we go with.

I reckon Johnson will be gone next year

hope so, that would leave us with Plodder, McKain, Ferrante and Brown as midfield options, but with us playing three of them at the moment, I'd like to see one more signed

Again, after tonight I can clearly repeat - Triantis is a walk-up start in your present midfield. He really is like a Johnson or Ferrante - but with an actual touch of class.

Jay Jay Okocha?  A bit old but skillful as hell.  Let's convince him to come out of retirement!

I know it has been mentioned before but Edgar Davids would be a fantastic signing. He was great at the Galaxy-All Stars game and is without a club. A journalist asked him at the end of the match if the A-league was a possibility and he said something along the lines of 'Im not sure at the moment but possibly'

I don't think Davids has even thought about it at all. I would love to see him sign but think he was being courteous when put in such a tight spot.

He would definitely be the spark we need and it would be a huge coup to sign him - him or fred would be able to hold that spot. If he did sign I'd be there every week just to watch him - he used to be my fav player a few years ago.
Just don't know if we have much chance though. He'd be wanting a heck load more money. There's loads of other top quality free agents out there still - Ronaldo, Ljungberg, Gravesen, Canizares etc. But they could all find clubs interested with buckets of cash to pay for them.

Doubt he would come but I guess he showed Interest in this game.
Stranger things have happened though..playwithFire2008-12-07 00:20:26

IMO Davids would be more disruptive than helpful. He's doesnt exactly come across like  a modest bloke. (unlike Fred)

How modest would you be?

If I'd done half of what he has I'd be so far up myself I'd be lookin outta my butt!

Davids has been my favourite football player since i was 5 years old so it was great to see him play live last night. He would be the all time best signing of A-League if he signed with us.

Couldnt believe how small he was, so skillful though - just messes with the defence then draws the foul.

Even for a guest stint he would be amazing for the Nix. Last night goes to show he's still got it, wouldnt be suprised if the Galaxy looked to sign him after that performance.

Also, we should move in for Peverley before someone else does...

100% agree with this, both comments. I will be disappointed if the Phoenix don't even look at signing Davids if they find out hes too expensive atleast they can say they tried and we need to sign Peverley he was pretty good and also I would like to see if we could get Jarrod Smith though it looks like he just signed with a Seattle club

Jarrod Smiths' mum is my art teacher...

Anyway, I heard somewhere that Theoklitos could be doing a straight swap for Moss?

Can anyone confirm/deny?
