You might have a point about passing sideways and backwards, if it weren't for two things: That you are flat out wrong about him never passing forwards, and that the AWs style of build-up play relies on being patient at the back and looking for the full-backs/defensive wingers to take the ball up the flanks, so most of the time when Elliott recieves the ball he is MEANT to look for the safest option.

Whohoo..
Don't get me wrong, I wish the AWs had more to pick from but we have to pick from what we have got..
Elliot is the only player in the AWs (Nelsen and Fallon aside) who demands the ball when we have it (the classic is throw ins - they take an age because everyone runs away from the thrower and not just to make space!!). The others turn their backs and run forward (watch Brown and Bertos for this). Thus when Elliot gets the ball (by default) his closest options (midfielders as in Brown and Leo) are facing away from him and generally require and $m ball to find their feet. Being the pro he is he will try and play a guaranteed ball (this is generally to the full backs who then play the line (b/c their is no midfield option to feet because they have thei rbacks turned and are about 50m away).
I don't know how Brown does it but he ghosts in behind the forwards- maybe he is there to pick up the scraps from a long ball but I personally don't rate him.
Elliot any day, pace or not...

those are very good points
and you're dead right about the throw-ins, I've noticed that from day 1.but, in-saying that we need someone like Macglinchey over Elliot. I don't like Elliott's style of play and i believe he just slows things down when we should be on the counter attack.
for example, little mac passes the ball, moves into space and shouts for it back. Then he repeats.
Elliott doesn't do that, he normally just stand around and relies others to work off him.
and imo, that's not the type of player we need right now.

you people who see Elliott as a football superstar need to get some brains, then we'll talk.
and i just have to laugh at SB's comment "what is wrong with passing backwards ?"
hahahahahahaha yea imagine if everyone did that................ yep, how the f**k can the team score ?? hahahahahahahahahahahah
honestly, some of you lot..............

S.O.N is right. Its because you state it as fact and call us all idiots (yes, everyone is an idiot except you
). Then you dont back it up with anything. You say "hes sh*t,he cant pass the ball (and the horrible sideways passing comment)" then say "oh except the confederations cup" as if that doesnt count. You have nothing else to base your opinion on,and you havent backed up these with anything close to an example. yet you still state it as fact and immaturely call us idiots.

Look, I'm not denying the fact that he has in the past been a good player and yeah sure his vision is great and he's not a bad DMF. But think about the style of the midfielders in the A-League at the moment, most are box to box, fast skillful players, players who would counter his style of play and TBH I think run circles around him.
Way, way off. Box to box, skillful midfielders in the A-league? Name one.

If we did sign Elliott maybe Ricki would look at changing the way we play. Signing Elliott would give us a solid set piece taker - something we currently miss - and a player capable of building attacks intelligently from the back but as some on here think he doesn't have the legs to get up and down.
Given outside of Lochead we don't have any natural fullbacks maybe we'll switch to three at the back (likely Dura, Siggy and McKain) with Elliott shielding in front. The lack of a box to box player some seem to think is essential could be offset by allowing more naturally attacking players like Hearfield more liscense to bomb forward from more of a wing/back roll.

"midfield linkman who can get forward and score" could be a handy acquisition.

Thanks for saving us Hampster, I guess there's endless options for players to trial, but the fact that he's gotten himself down under to give it a shot gives the impression that the commitment and focus is there.
You know we belong together...

That's true, the fact that he seems to have instantly looked towards Australia could also point to a desire for sunny beaches etc.
Or that it's his last hope cause he's been turned down by everyone else which seems more likelya.haak

well, we did just let Mulligan go.

Signing Elliot would be a bit of a backward step imo. In A League terms he reminds me of Ufuk Talay who was playing for the Fury this season. Both play very central, have good close ball control and passing, but are aging, fragile, and lacking in pace and mobility. Talay was only average, really struggled in the heat and eventually succumbed to injuries. If Ricki really wants an alternative to the current successful Nix midfield line up I would hope it would be someone younger than Elliot.

Interesting news item today...Gold Coast money man Cl;ive Palmer apparently has informed the football association that after next week he will no longer fund the Gokld Coast team....could be some of their players may be looking for a new home.........

Any room for a Smeltz, Culina or Porter, finances permitting and providing they haven't gone elsewhere already?
How good a fit would any or all of them be in our current setup?

They just won the NYL - any likely lads there? Not sure we need/want any of the above, given what they'd cost and who we've got...

I'd take Smeltz back in a heartbeat.
The other two, not so much. Although I still maintain that the team needs more boxhead, so I'd heart (and probably stalk) Culina if he came here.

Porter wouldn't fit due to his nose. Also, Porter would be more of what we have in Greeny.
Culina, just what we are looking for. Unfortunately I'd give Cullina no chance- if he plays A-League he'll play in Oz. I doubt Old Bling (now just Bling?) could afford him, but with them losing Corica he'd be perfect for them.
Smeltz- in a heart beat. He'll surely head off shore- but man, he'd be perfect for us. Come back Smeltzy, Stefan didn't mean to send you the shirt...
Also worth looking at Adama Traore. Left back/wingback- really impressed me till he broke midway through the season. Put some pressure on/provide cover for Lochy.

Culina - exactly what we need - the missing creative link - vision, skill, speed, very accurate pass, can play the killer ball........ Culina and Ifill playing off each other - awesome.
Smeltz - not so keen - can't help but think his time at GCU has stuffed his football head and how would his family ever settle back in to Wellington if his missus was so dead set on leaving. Unhappy missus = sh*t performances.
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)
