Thanks - leaving our run (to fill the critical 2nd striker position) pretty late.

Stating the obvious you would have to have a high degree of confidence that the Lithuanian and / or Dutch trialists will work out - if they don't you only have a few weeks left to recruit the 2nd striker from, what would then be, a picked over talent pool.

I guess we could also be working on signing up a proven (i.e. low risk) striker. My preference would be a 2nd proven striker and the better of the Lithuanian and Dutch trialists - assuming one of them is up to standard.

This 2nd striker position continues to really worry me............the season defining recruitment and not feeling we are on top of it....................especially after the Killen kite flying...........I know, have faith.

Does anyone know if the game between the Nix and the Victory in Queesnstown is being televised. I would love to have a look at this Dutch triallist. Will Astraukas still be here for this game? and if so could we see them starting up front together?

Just responding to the NUFC fan who suggested a Killen/Viduka partnership.... I dont think thats going to get anybody promoted.....

No but it could fulfill his prediction of Killen playing in League 1

I'm thinking for the striker options:
Plan A has to be both Astraukas and the Dutchy work out and we sign them both.
Plan B would be only one of them is up to it and gets signed and we have a fall back of signing say Krishna as a squad player
Plan C - I don't even want to go there cos' it's a dark and gloomy place

Your plan B, Krishna is trialling at the Fury and has looked alright therefrom the reports I've seen, might not be available for us

He's good but wasn't the right type of striker we wanted accordingly to our news and therefore we were OK with him having a trial with Fury. So he is not our plan B.

More a case of didn't make an impression!

"Chris Killen has returned to Celtic from his loan at Norwich City.

The New Zealand striker has made just four appearances for the Canaries since signing on loan in January and has fallen behind Carl Cort, David Mooney, Alan Gow and Cody McDonald in the pecking order.

Norwich boss Bryan Gunn told the Eastern Daily Press: "He is still contracted to us and we can call on him in the next eight games.

"But it is a convenient thing to do and a compassionate decision.

"It's better than him travelling around the country every weekend and watching from the stands."

Pfft. They are not scoring much goals and it sounds like that Killen was already assigned to be fifth striker behind the incumbents from the word go because they doesn't want to upset a couple of their forwards. A trait of a weak inexperience first time manager.

I still think that he got a raw deal and that the team is play crap and giving him crap service as well. That is more believable than suggesting that he wasn't good enough because we know he is good enough from his SPL record with Hibs.

Players on loans get usually raw deals, trust me it happens most of the time especially if they (the club) were struggling already. It's a sign of being desperate. Loan players are sometime used as a patsy. So we should take it with a grain of salt.AllWhitebelievr2009-06-09 11:19:53

You may have video taped him at the game. Anyone seen them do so? Anyway they do have match reports on practice runs don't they? Get a couple of senior players to do a peer review. Depends on their club set up.

It really is a shame we didn't get Killen, he was awesome today versus italy! I'd imagine he'd have a few people knocking on his door after that!

Yep. Both last two practice games were filmed..thanks to Sony for the camera by the look of it!...saw the guy doing it at the broadcast box at top tier of stadium. No doubt Ricki will get the highlights clip /e-mail.

With perths squad looking even stronger with Sterjovski set to sign as marquee, I cant help but feel we are not aiming high enough in the players we are trialling or trying to sign...

Im looking forward to the season more than anything but am concerned with the quality we have. Greenacre and Diego have been good signings (I hope) but I'd feel much more at ease if we weren't banking on an unproven Lithuanian and an unseen dutchy as our ideal targets.

I guess we are all holding out for some news, i hope we get the guys we need to be a top 6 team and/or better...

I think were going fine recruitment wise, especially now since the nix players have shown that they have got the goods while playing in the NZ side. I thought the Leo's set pieces looked great, from what i've seen and thats something we really lacked from last season.

Not to worried about the class of marquee players being brought in tbh, I think Ricki and management have realized that we probably don't have the money to bring big stars over for the nix and it sounds like their trying to built a basis of reliable players and the squad in my eyes has never been stronger.

If we get one/two proven strikers I think that this seasons squad will be light years ahead of last seasons and could do very very well

I'm tending to agree with you Evan231 re the potential for this years squad.
Lots of very deliberate stuff going on to ensure the best options with players trialled, away pre- season games to test logistics planning and team  management, within the budget Phoenix has. The international experience for 8 of the Phoenix players should reflect in better results hopefully too. If Ricki can get the squad gelling well and the management team do the right thing tactically this year we'll have a good chance of top 6 success.

I think we will start well given the fitness levels coming off Confed Cup..and then have a mid season lull..so we need strong squad...get these strikers in the bag and a cover for attacking midfield.

A small town in Europe........looking to bounce straight back up....well that aint going to happen

We need a quality Striker and a ball playing Cm.

We have good defensive players in McKain and Brown, but lack that cm who can thread passes in the smallest of gaps and score goals from outside the box.

Ferrante i rate, but had an off season last year, so would like the assurance policy.

Squad hasn't improved as much as other sides.

What is Diego ?  Chopped Liver ?

Which other sides ?  I'll name one existing side looking significantly netter than least year - Perth.  That's it, one side.  Chuck in Gold Coast and you have two sides that have 'improved' the league with signings... hardly the whole league.

and gold coast plus NQ arguably have weakened other sides, especially Sydney.  There has been very few transfers from outside the league, it's just players rotating between clubs

Haha I love your quoute HardNews.  - "What is Diego ?  Chopped Liver ?"

Very funny/. I tend to agree though. Perth should be good this year, i hope and expect Sydney to be rubbish and I dont think Robbie Fowler is going to get anywhere near the Golden Boot. If we keep Greenacre and other key players fit then we really should be in position to fight for a top six spot.

Also would like to add what great news it is to see Manny playing for Malta against quality opposition. This can only be good for the Wellington Phoenix

Worse squads than last year: CCM (let a few go and not replaced them yet), Adelaide, Sydney, + Fury worse than A-League average

Similar to last year: Newcastle, Melbourne, Brisbane, us (Diego and Greenacre for Smeltz, Crowther for Moss).

Better than last year: Gold Coast (better than A-League average), Perth

We should hopefully benefit from a positive vibe from the All Whites, plus Manny Muscat playing international football, plus a good degree of stability from last season (with Melbourne will also benefit from but nobody else has).

We are not doing that badly, we won't win the league but we should be top 6 without too much problem.

Sydney have a worse squad? Interested to hear your thoughts. I wouldn't have said so, they've also got themselves a much better manager.

Newcastle are better now than they were at the end of last season if ACL squad is anything to go by. Melbourne and Brisbane were already above our standards anyway.

Given the teams that placed below us are now better, I wouldn't be too confident just yet.

Centrebet have us hot favourites for the wooden spoon - I don't think, for a moment, that will happen but if we can't get our strikers sorted out we haven't a hope of top 6.

I don't think it's going to be resolved quickly either.

I just have the feeling that we'll wait for the right men, people who genuinely impress rather than taking a punt on something that 'might' work.
