I really hope either Potty or Chen prove that they are good enough to be signed, and then the automatic signing that is on the way will seal the deal. Speaking of, anyone heard anymore on that front? As in, are the negotiations with that player on-going?

Well, if it was Morientes, it seems we've given up now.

Morinetes would of been worth the money IMO. Would probably make it back from tv coverage, shirt sales and an increase of season tickets...

[quote]The Phoenix were also offered, like most A-League clubs, former Spain, Deportivo La Coruna and West Ham striker Diego Tristan and former Spain and Liverpool frontman Fernando Morientes, as well as 2001 World Player of the Year Luis Figo for a guest stint. But none were seriously considered because of the small fortune they would need to fork out to bring them to Wellington.

From the radio interviews with Ricki and Tony P it sounded like they were a fair way through negotiations and i quote Ricki when I say 'Possibly within the next 10 days' concerning announcing news of a striker that would be an automatic signing.

This article says that none were seriously considered, which doesnt sound like the striker we are currently in negotiations with.

We also get hammered because of the weakness of the NZ Peso so getting a 'name' player is even more challenging

I'm just wondering why they would mention all this now...

What ever happened to that Canadian guy who played for the Knights?
Wasn't he playing for some Central American or Caribbean league?
He was pretty quick.

The next few weeks is make or break time for the Phoenix.

I totally agree with Rickis comments on how strong the squad is. The side is now relatively settled...the back 7 just about pick themselves. They know each others play....we will be hard to break down at the back. We have talent and depth in our wide attacking players. Greenacre looks a good replacement for Smeltz.

But those last two signings we all agree are absolutely critical. If we do not find a good target man it will remove a whole attacking dimension from our play. We have to find a big striker to offer some threat in the air....all the other attackers are shortish. A big guy would help Greenacre who could poach goals from the mayhem he created.

I would prefer the 3rd striker to be more of an creative goal scoring midfield. We need someone to pose a threat down the middle as well. Hopefully Diego will offer this though he is not a noted goal scorer.

If we can find those 2 players we will be a complete team. I have high hopes this season....being odds on favourites for the wooden spoon is crap.......if we manage to recruite well we will have our best year yet!

Norwich have been trialling two strikers, one being Michael Bridges, so this doesn't sound beyond the realms of possibility but then perhaps that's the point!  250k sounds a small amount of money to trigger a clause in a contract at GCU though.  I thought it was like the Hotel California, at least until Palmer wants you gone, when presumably you go on a tour of one of his mines! Hope its true! He is in the form of his life. Worth another shot in Europe/UK. But Norich?

Link to the discussion about this on the GCU website.

Doubt it. I'm sure the Turkish side offered more. Palmer doesn't exactly need the money. Also, he made such a big fuss about moving his family etc I doubt they would uproot to England.

Completely agree! I'm wondering how creative this Chinese chap is? Usually they are quite strong technically.

I also think that Diego might not make the cut, but it sounds like Daniel did an alright job in this past game...? 2 more strikers will do the trick, and they don't have to both be big experienced forwards, If we can sign some one younger to learn from the pros, it could also do the trick.

Targetman seems destined to happen, and with Greenacre next to him, as long as the pair get quality ball, we could be quite formidible this season. Backs do look strong. Would like to see Lia push push for his shot. Muscat could play left if Lochy doesnt perform.

But overall, we are heading in the right direction

Moreintes/ Figo?

Would be amazing, but are we sure that this is a good source? I mean, if a journalist looked through a few forums he could find these names thrown about..

We should have at least four forward in the squad. Greenacre, Costa, and the next two to be signed. Very much aiming in the right direction by the sounds of it all.

So Shane is going to swap his great family lifestyle on the gold coast to live in norwich?Surely not.

That offer was directed at the Phoenix, and a percentage was going to be given to the Gold Coast. This "offer" is fully for GCU and no-one else.

let's be realistic: ain't gonna happen! Besides, they're both pretty old. And although Figo has done well till recently for Inter Milan, he's way too old. And if either of them came, would it be as marquee or guest player? The second option is basically useless if you ask me. Sure it may raise the profile of the club, but I question its financial viability.
I watch Italian news everyday and last I heard of Figo, he was going to retire and possibily join the staff at Inter Milan.

Morientes I don't know.

don't think shane would leave the gold coast. but if he does thats brilliant!

btw, our forum is amazing isnt it? sh*t the GCU one is absoluetly rubbish.

but these two last signings are critical to our entire season. look how hard it was for us to score last year, we need these two players. but however all the flack we have got from the media and TAB, I think it is a bloody strong squad. atleast the back 7. and yes the wingers are good. I am expecting alt out of daniel this year and mulli to step up off th bench for the midfield. its kinda sad that these 2 striker wont hav been signed earlier to give them time to gel but tbh weshould be ready to start the season comfortably.
