We're playing better football under Merrick. There's just a few annoying things to be ironed out. Like everyone's mentioned, the high defence was dumb. Also need a decent DM and a proper RB. So close, yet so far. The Nix are on the cusp of being a good team, and so the fact it's not coming together is very hard to take.
Agree, we are playing better. What we all have to remember is that these guys are basically relearning the game from the Hoof ball and kick it anywhere type that Ricki had them playing - and still is at AW level. whether or not the players left over from Rickis time have the ability to hang onto the ball and pass it is up for debate.
Too often I've seen Vinnie & Mannie try to do the Carlos passes that only Carlos has the ability to do. You are right, you can see it almost coming off but them we're one bad pass from disaster too. Durante is getting dragged out of position trying to cover RB. That's not Fenton's fault, he's still trying to learn his position and the fella is only a youngster, cut him some slack.
Siggy & Durante are still a solid unit, especially when they can concentrate at what they do best. Up in Napier they looked a lot better because they weren't being dragged everywhere. I thought Moss had one of his better games last night too. I wouldn't blame any of the goals on him.
Someone pointed out we've played 3 or the expected top 4. That we haven't been dished out a serious hiding - although after 20 mins last night i thought we were in for one - and this is a good thing. The Victory took their foot off the throat and imho, that showed a weakness to be exploited - something we nearly did for the last 40 minutes of the game.
Remember, Ricki was given 4 seasons to achieve what he did. Merrick has been given 4 games to completely overhaul the team and it's style and tactics. Whilst I appreciate he's had a longer gap between seasons to try and do this, the only real test is not pre-season friendlies but in real match conditions.
Something I fear the AW's are about to find out to their disadvantage. games against club sides - sporadically, is not what they needed. I thought Ricki said lessons were learned from the '82 WC and how the money was spent etc. Well after 2010, we really should have been playing four to six Internationals against decent sides - including the fuck-up that was this recent trip to the US etc.
I'm looking forward to CHCH again, now that our players are allowed to play. It'll keep them sharper. I wish them all the best down there and on their trip to Mexico. Still buzzing we have a professional football team to follow!
