Was it not Boyd who refused to play for the second team - getting offside with coach?

Young Kiwis with talent thinking they're too good for the Nix (or for Wellington?) is a real concern.

I feel like Boyd has been hyped beyond all recognition. He was chucked in the first team very early but still had a couple of seasons to stake a claim. He looked decent but didn't deliver many goals or assists for someone playing as a forward. He scored 2 off the bench in one game and a flurry in a couple of ASBP games  but he's not done that since in Portugal so it's safe to say that was just a really hot streak rather than a sign of his actual level. Yet people still seem to talk about him like he's a great untapped talent.

I'd rather we just gave Parkhouse and Rogerson more game time and maybe gave Fenton chance to come back as a winger than spending money on getting Boyd back.

[/quote]Boyd scored a goal every 31min in his last season in the HAL. A goal or assist every 206min - as a teenager for all but 30min of HAL career is not that bad. Better player than Parkhouse.

100% agreed. Parkhouse is barely a professional level footballer. I  would have Boyd every day of the week.

No coincidence that our best prospects have left the Nix for other A-League clubs. We don't do enough to keep them.

Surprised he's still playing football to be honest. Was never quite good enough for the A-League.

Dyer???? Don't think so

Dyer was the worst midfielder at the u20's. I thought he'd impose himself etc given the senior football he's played but he went missing big time and was very timid on the ball. TAHW is a good shout. I rate him highly. He's probably more of a squad player like Ridenton tbh.

Interested to see if Rossi is retained (albeit on contract) as unfortunately while he and Dura are good CBs and make good decisions, as a  pair they lacked pace just like Smith and Dura do down the left for the AWs. Lowry was combative and had some good wheels from memory. Doyle also isn't the quickest.

I think Fenton will be lucky to make a match day squad again. He was good as a kid because he was instinctive and quick but you can see he's over thinking it out there and lost confidence.

The nix need some mongrel and athleticism in the middle of the park. I think that's where Ernie got it wrong. He signed ball players without pace or mongrel. This is why we were a better team with Siggy and Manny.

Rossi is class and plenty fast enough, especially as his positioning is great anyway. The difference in average goals conceded per game between when he played and when he didn't last season was more than 2 IIRC. A striker worth 2 goals a game would be being talked about as the best player in the league by a clear margin, but defenders don't get the same credit. I would be gutted if he goes, I think he's the best CB the club has ever had

Rossi is brilliant, both his performances and his leadership on the field are top notch. I watched a few Phoenix games right on the sideline and man, you can hear him. Reminds me of Siggy, we need that. Though i agree we need pace in addition.

I guess the issue is Dura is the captain so he will play each game and Doyle isn't quick. So teams were getting in behind us easily last year. We also lacked wheels with Lia screening. I agree Rossi is great but the challenge is not these guys as individuals but their combinations etc. The importance of  the three midfielders we need to replace can't be understated. None of them had a bad season last year but for some reason it didn't click.

Rooney is captain of Man U. Coach just needs some balls and z better option. Fox and Rossi need more game time together for me.

Na, it's a big problem for them. Haven't heard any other clubs rushing in for Howieson. He won't be on the radar of other A league clubs. Instead we have Parkhouse. If we are talking about Boyd and Howieson, it's not a big problem for the 'Nix.

It's a pity Kosta left, but how much crap were we giving him? Kiwis going to other A league clubs is good for us recruiting better Kiwis. Means we're a pathway to being import status at another club and so worth playing for us to get in that shop window.

NO. Brocks went to NQ 2009 and Jets 2010. And Kosta to Roar in 2010. Any since Rojas - or any on the horizon even close? None that I know of.

We've only ever had two genuinely talented young NZ players. Both are no longer at the club.

Boyd is perhaps a 3rd. Fenton might scrape in at 4th... Ridenton and Rufer haven't kicked on.

The few times he has been subbed on into the box to box role, I thought he provided some much needed forward drive. A new gaffer coming in is a good chance for him to try and play a role that he is better suited too.

The standard of the league has improved and he hasn't.

I can't remember the last time he beat a player on the outside or played a telling ball through the defense. Plays with his head down too much. It's a shame, but if we are looking for him to provide any sort of option to the coach other than a squad player we up a creek!

I agree with that.  I wish him well and I feel genuinely sorry for him, seeing him as a shadow of the player we hoped him to become.  Even if his noticeable physical fragility might be overcome with time and conditioning, it will take longer than that for him to develop some mental toughness which is essential at this level of the competition.

This is of course a separate topic, but MetalLegNZ is correct. The league keeps improving, both through natural evolution and through more money coming in from outside. While it is commendable for us to develop, nurture and field local Kiwi players, ultimately we must aim to win the premiership and for that we need the best squad we can get.  Fenton's example is a case in point; if someone like Tratt proved to better at that position than Fenton, I would choose Tratt every time, even if he was not a local player.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

The League might be continually improving but it is a shame match officials are still as bad as they were in the very first season. No improvement there.

His game time at Vitoria's been hindered because they are completely stacked when it comes to young talent on the wing (Raphinha, Marega, Xande Silva + more). I reckon they would be open for a loan move, could he slot in for Barba? It wouldn't affect Vitoria in a bad way at all, he needs game time at a standard higher than reserve football

34 games and 8 goals in Portuguese 2nd tier last season - being linked with a loan move to another 1st tier side for this coming season
