Awesome.

Would prefer a 2nd espn channel though.

Does this mean, if you are too cheap to pay for HD (i.e me) the general picture quality will still be better? Champions League games look like they are coming from an old Beta tape at times

^^ Id assume so. No way Im a paying extra for HD or any of that sh*t, its bad enough we have to pay as it is to watch domestic sport. And Sky being as sh*t as they are arent getting anymore out of me anyway...

I asked ESPN on Facebook re: ESPN2 and they said theyre wanting to break into NZ (just made it into Aus), and that theyre looking into it. I take that as meaning Sky are a bit "yeah nah" on the issue. AJ132011-03-14 07:47:42

only just discovered sky sports have a football facebook page.  Not many like it, only 163.  Get in there and show sky sports you love football, maybe it will improve coverage.

I notice that Sky Sports 3 is now HD as of recently. I guess that means when the nix end up on this channel, it will at least be in HD.

Im very tempted to not have sky sports for the next few months as all there is ever on is  Netball, Rugby and Golf..oh and more rugby and netball

you're obviously watching the wrong channels, there is plenty of footy on, the NRL and IPL as well I think.

I think everyone's a little bit precious really. The reality is, the Phoenix do not get very high ratings in comparison to many other codes.
Interestingly, it sounds like they don't really know what the ratings are. From this article about plumetting league and rugby numbers...

Sky boss John Fellet dismissed the plunge, saying Nielsen's ratings calculations, which sample 1.250 viewers in 500 homes, were outdated, because they didn't cover Sky viewers with MySky boxes who are anecdotally the biggest consumers of televised sport. And he said the winter codes weren't deep enough into their season to distress Sky: "It's too early to worry: call me in six weeks."

I am assuming football is rated the same way. This isn't a very sophisticated means of determining how many people are watching. People with MySky are excluded altogether.

IPL is not on in NZ this season, thank heaven. What an awful competition that is. And that's from a man who loves cricket.
Permalink Permalink

I think most people who love cricket are the same (that I know of).

It's those who are casual on cricket who like T20 and the IPL.

someone had twittered that they really missed the IPL. Skys reply was that they were still trying to aquire the rights.

I'm casual on cricket (hard not to be with the black caps form), love T20, but think the IPL is a load of bollocks.

Much prefer the NZ stuff, and would have loved to see the same format in a NZ/AU comp.

It's pointless this time. Sky have no say in what happens with ESPN; they just relay the feed they're given. Sky don't even get much advice on programming changes that ESPN sometimes produce. I found that out when ESPN were listing a live England game at the wrong time and queried it - Sky can only go with whatever ESPN tell them and have no input to ESPN's schedule or decision-making process. The ESPN feed we get is the ESPN feed for the Pacific Rim - I imagine Sky NZ are a very small part of ESPN's total user base.

Harrassing Sky for ESPN's decisions will only make the football community look like a bunch of whingers and dilute any power of our voice when it comes to genuine Sky issues.

Harrass ESPN if you want. I've find they do respond sometimes to queries and complaints. Not sure it ever makes a difference to the US behemoth when a NZ viewer complains though!

Shouldn't be any worries about all games being live on SKY this season - the NRL wraps up the weekend before the A-League season starts.

ESPN has been HD, on the Oz beam for over a year now - it's just f**ked when it's available on the same satellite already, but we end up shafted by Sky NZ with the appalling quality on ESPN.

But it's not on the same satellite.

Australia has 2 satellites at the same location for TV (C1 and D3, location 156 degree).
And we use 1 satellite (D1, location 160).

That is why Foxtel (Aus) has something like 27 HD and 2 3D channels to our 8 HD and no 3D.

Sky NZ truly is crud. It's similar to what was available in the UK literally about 15 years ago.

I appreciate there are many more customers in the UK though but I think Sky NZ could be slightly better for the price, which is not far off the UK price.

I would happily subscribe to a football channel too. But yeah, what's the point of a ALL rugby ALL THE TIME channel, if your rugby has to take up so many of the other sports channels.

Sky, if you're having trouble getting people to subscribe to the rugby channel, why not make it the only channel you can watch the rugby on!

Yes we know. That's what sparked off this whole conversation topic - the 1 June date being after the ECL Final. The surprise, for me, was to find that each country that receives the Pacific Rim channel has such widely differing implementation dates e.g. Aussies having been live for over a year.

Not as far as I am aware - I think it comes free. At least it used to, I definitely watched it before I subscribed to Sky Sport.
