Tratt - interesting he didn't get a contract while the team were in Aus (while Rufer did). Suggests Rudan wasn't convinced. How'd he go vs Lower Hutt? And the Korean?

I suspect Tratt's all but signed up. Don't think they'd have brought him over here otherwise.

The Korean was very underwhelming.

Interesting that Tratt played right midfield which reminded me of Ricky moving Fenton. Prefer him at the back. Also, I agree with El Grap, Hopefully the Korean guy has more to offer than what was shown on Saturday.

Amazing how often people say stuff like 1.83cm is 'pretty tall for a Korean', but people would never say that it's 'pretty tall for a Nigerian/Colombian/Jamican' etc etc, even though Koreans are on average taller than those countries. People can't help but think 'asian = short'.

But I wasn't comparing average height of male Koreans to that of Nigerian/Colombian/Jamaicans.

I was comparing the player on trial Byeong Su Yu to other people from his country.

Average height of male South Koreans = 1.7 m (all people aged 18+) or 1.73 m (aged 20-24)

The player on trial Soo Byeung Yoo is 1.83 m (6 feet) compared to average male Korean height 1.7 m (5'7")

So he's quite a bit taller than the average South Korean.

Best available stats for many countries here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_average_huma...

South Korean males are on average, the tallest people in Asia on that chart.

But even that is shorter than ALL European countries on that chart.

(e.g. England, France, Germany 1.75 m; Spain 1.73 m, Sweden 1.77 m, Netherlands 1.8m)

NZ average height males (20-49 years) = 1.77 m

No stats available for all NZ males (would be slightly lower since height decreases with age)

Australia gives an indication: avge male height (all 18+) = 1.75m; (18-24) = 1.77

It's probably because I'm a short ass but I'm shocked that the average height for men is as low as it is, especially amongst under 40s. I would guessed more 179-180cm for average height for that age group.

there's alot of short men out there lowering that average.

Didn't they play a back 5? RM or RWB with 3 central defenders is probably perfect for Tratt

Yeah I guess so, although it looked like he was pushing forward a lot (I know that's what a wing back does). Regardless, it seemed that he was pretty comfortable and I'm glad to have him back.

I don't think that Tratt's ability at A-league level has ever been in question. Having him back should resolve one of the outstanding weak areas in the starting line-up.

Tratt's a solid A-League player who has the awkward knack of dribbling through players seemingly accidentally. He's also a decent defender, which is what we need.

Scott Mcdonald?

35 shortly. 15 goals in 31 games for Dundee last year. Claims to be fit.

I used to be a great fan of Scotty, about the time of WC 2010, but he never thrived outside of the Scottish league.

He would have a problem adjusting now to the speed of the A-league, especially after playing there for a decade or two.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Plus he'll be getting shorter now too...

He was in the Scottish Championship with Dundee United last season, wasn't that good in the few times I saw him. Though people in tangerine rarely look good.

It's not correct that someone playing in the SPL for a decade would have a problem adjusting to the speed of the A-League. Like, you've just been marked by the likes of Boyata & Caulker, and you need to get up to speed to deal with Jade North!

No other A-League clubs are interested in him, think the speed of the game here would be tough for him. Utterly bizarre reality that CCM will seriously look at Usain Bolt but not McDonald. Personally I think he would still be good for any of the clubs as an off the bench option, similar to Carney or Santalab

How many players are still trialing? Any rumours on which of them have impressed enough to win a contract, and who's failed to impress and is likely to get cut loose?

Think the only two in over the weekend were the Korean who was recommended by a reasonable Australian source and Tratt.  Expecting at least one from the U20s to be involved during the next few weeks.

Club still discussing/tracking some import options.

Completely agree. Sure, he might be a talented attacking option off the bench, for the last 2o minutes of the game, but I do not think this is what we need.  I would rather have a younger Kiwi (OK, maybe even Aussie) bloke with no history of serious injury as an option for the attack, to learn and mature next to Krishna and Williams.   Sort of the way I hoped Watson would turn out but did not.

Players such as New Zealand national league performers Justin Gulley, Jack-Henry Sinclair and Andre de Jong have unsuccessfully trialled, while Rudan said "at least four" others have turned down trial offers.

That is kinda disappointing if De Jong has missed out, he seems to be doing very well in the NSW NPL.

That's been the Kiwi attitude problem which the Phoenix has had to cope with for years. Don't give a sharke how many NZers are in the Phoenix - just want to win the League. Big signing on its way.

I find it a bit odd. de Jong is a seriously good player. As an All Whites fan, I hope Rudan is wrong. As an observer, I think he's wrong.

Hopefully Andre has a dutch passport and can become the next Phoenix reject to pick up an Eredivisie gig

Further to this, we have a virtual conveyor belt of young players picking up pro gigs all over the world and the Phoenix cannot find a single Kiwi? I mean, have you seen the Phoenix lately?

Its odd but maybe there is missing bridge between the Phoenix and kiwi players, these guys are getting signed around the world. I think Rudan is quite fussy with the type of player he wants in his environment and with the limited positions fair enough too, I just don't think we have as much talent to choose from to what he would expect to have based on his experience in Oz. The local talent he doesn't want will eventually (well I hope) get pro gigs elsewhere. TAHW wasn't on that list?

Doesn't read like a full list, I am hoping its just Liam Hyslop's assumption that the likes of De Jong has been passed over & once the NSW NPL season finishes he will be back into camp.
