Still worth a look, if it's him that's trialling. Great season in NSW NPL.

Has anyone said he's trialling for us? Or have I missed something? But agree it would be worth taking a close look at him.

No, just speculation that he might be the unnamed Spanish trialist.

Worth a look... but on paper, no where near the level of signing we need to be making in order to be competative.

Permalink Permalink

What signing would make us competitive? We just lost to practically a freaking youth team (and not a great one by some comments). Even if we signed Messi, I doubt we would be competitive. Although we might avoid the wooden spoon!

I had such high hopes when Rudan was signed and each week these hopes are seriously dashed. I'm as low on the future of the nix as I've ever been.

We've had this kind of discussion for years - is it that our players just aren't good enough for the A League? If so, what the heck can we do to get better players? is it a matter of not paying them enough? poor scouting, how the club is perceived by players and agents? I suppose if we knew the answer we wouldn't be in this position.

That'll be it

We've damaged our reputation over the last few years to a point where no player wants to come to us, and I don't blame them.

So what happened to Essien, Rudan said they agreed terms and then he pulled out... can we call him back?

Olympic have a Spanish striker on their books, Alex Sanchez - https://www.ftbl.com.au/news/is-alex-sanchez-the-best-striker-not-playing-in-the-a-league-512562

Maybe we are going to have a look at him?

Had an excellent season in NSWPL. Surely worth a look at least.

He only has one hand too!

He's also studying law. I wonder if he'd have to switch from his local university to Victoria to continue his studies, and if that hassle might be enough to make coming here less appealing.

Doing a PhD in Human Rights so if he doesn't wrap it up before the season starts, could well be able to continue it at Victoria.

But in this interview from two weeks ago, sounds unlikely to want to leave Sydney:

https://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/meet-the-former-la...

"... I’m even doing a PHD on human rights in sport so I can continue working in this area after I retire from football.”

Although contracted to Sydney Olympic for the 2019 season, the striker’s incredible form on the pitch has caught the attention of a number of clubs in Australia as well as in Asia and his native Spain .

Sanchez revealed he had spoken with a few clubs about his playing future but said he plans to return to Olympic next season.

“I have felt at home at this club and in Sydney from the moment I arrived,” he said.

“It has been the best experience of my life both personally and professionally."

On Essien's Twitter he's pictured this week at Chelsea's training ground - probably decided to quit playing and take up coaching, beginning with a junior coaching role at Chelsea.

Probably would have been a rather ineffective signing anyway.

Essien was cut by his Indonesian club Persib Bandung in March after one season with them - they had four other foreigners they wanted to keep ahead of him (only four foreigners allowed in Indonesian league):

https://www.standardmedia.co.ke/ureport/story/2001...

His old Chelsea mate Dan Petrescu was then going to sign him for CFR Cluj in Romania but got sacked and the new manager did't rate him:

I think NZ sports fans generally are pretty apathetic.

Until we see him in action then we need to reserve judgment to see if he is posh or something better

If go below the All Blacks, Rugby is facing some serious issues. Their playing numbers are fading  especially in Auckland and Wellington. Take a look at the crowds for the NPC its spot the spectator. Most games are attended by hundreds rather than thousands.

So is football picking up any of that shortfall? I dont think so, no cause for gloating.

Good point. The effect of players below AB leaving much earlier for Europe/Japan than they used against the cost of living these days and the increase in entertainment options online and live is kind of a perfect storm working against domestic rugby competitions (and indeed all domestic sport outside school level) in this country these days.

Decent pedigree. Most recently in the 2nd division rather than the 3rd which is also promising. Hopefully he is past his injury.

So speculation a day or so back about the Spaniard trialling with us being Alexis Sanchez (young guy with one hand) seems to have been wrong.

yeah probably a bit of tweaking necessary...but even if the lyrics stayed the same - you'd expect 5-7k people would know the words to the song!

How about 10+ thousand? Yeah, that supposes we win a few games along the way. Still optimistic about this season, but...

Oh Mandy

Well you gave their midfielder a raking
The ref sent you away, oh Mandy
And you kicked him and stopped him from playing,
That's a three match ban, oh Mandy

So much for this guy being a "unnamed Spaniard". He quite clearly has a name.

When are Phoenix HQ going to stop lying to us?

If he really didn't have a name it would be a good self promotion move by him, suddenly loads of fans that have Phoenix shirts without a name on the back would look like they are big fans of him.
