Didn't do much last season - hence why Adelaide wanted to terminate his contract this season if any club would take him - but performed quite well in the couple of seasons before and in their ACL run. Though so did Diego so..

Think he'll probably be a decent squad player behind Leo and Ifill. Really just depends who else we sign.

One thing he does have going for him is that he seems to be a good presence off the field and will fit in pretty well with our current group of players I reckon.

And Auckland - Pantelis hasn't had any amazing pace for a while. Not sure about Downey..when he was playing for NQ it looked like the injury had really affected him

And Scot, wanting us to reach higher standards isn't negative - we seem to be repeating the same mistakes every season. Of course this pre-season is a little different with all of the trouble surrounding the club, though, and honestly i'm just happy that we're still here.valeo2011-05-15 20:29:24

Can you explain what you mean by this? Surely by taking our time to build a squad we are avoiding the "everything at the last minute, dodgy Argentinians based on their DVD" mistakes of last season.

Lead the goal assists for the first 14 rounds, and captained the squad that went on an unbeaten run before Rini Coolen decided to change things.

In main, don't really want a thread for every new signing we make - but it's a fair point, this is for speculation, so all the discussion about Pantelis and Downey can go into the new official signings thread and this will remain a speculation thread.

Pantelis is a class signing... has shown class in the past... hopefully ricki can re-ignite his fire

In regards to the daniel thing... IMO he's still a great player, will hapilly have him run around in the last 20-30 mins for this season...

Daniel is a piece of Nix history, if he can still willingly bench and keep the dream alive then why not?

Very happy with the two signings so far. You really have to give it to Ricky and his team - they take their time, but they usually bring quality players to Wellington*

* warning: may exclude casual 'hiccups', such as George, Toto etc

Also, I almost feel like this thread should be divided in two part
1) Actual speculation: i.e. Smeltz, Pantelis, the return of McKain... so possible signings
2) Wishful thinking: Pires, Bergkamp, Henry, Viduka and such nonsense

A few interesting Championship level Aussies in that list. Although the likes of Kilkenny, Kisnorbo, Garcia etc are practically at their peaks and unlikely to want to come back for the Phoenix.

I remember when Kevin Lisbie was banging them in for Charlton in their PL heyday, and Steffen Iversen was classy in his day. Both definately at the back-end of their careers though.

Marlon King would be an interesting one, think he spent some time in prison a few years back though, was highly rated before that...

Jay Bothrood surely out of our league, very talented player though, and a nutter to boot.

Darius Vassell would be a star, he was silly enough to go to Turkey, so why not us? Hehe, remember seeing photos of his arrival into Turkey, he was treated like Pele!

Robert Earnshaw was devastating in his day, too.

Dave Nugent & Danny Webber would be quality...

There's no way any of those guys would even consider it. Jay Bothroyd played for England in November of last year.
Permalink Permalink

True, it would be foolish to think Bothroyd would consider it.

But Vassell is almost 31 years old, only scored 4 goals all season and is probably unlikely to be in hot demand in the UK.

Earnshaw has struggled this season, but has always been a goal machine. Even though he's at least 30 now, he's probably likely to get snapped up by another Championship team.

King's actually played a lot more and scored more goals than I realised this season, so probably not realistic either. Nugent's scored a few for Portsmouth too.

Danny Webber could be interesting though. He's been released by Portsmouth, after a 12 month injury layoff. Still only 29. Was a very quick and handy striker that was just never quite good enough for Premier League level. Obviously his recent playing and injury history aren't promising.

Garcia's off contract at Hull, but out injured for the next few months, so a no go. Could quite realistically come back to the A League though - he's never quite cut it at the top level over there, is almost 30.

Kisnorbo has been an underrated defender who years ago was linked with a number of top clubs (even if it was on tribal football, haha). Probably going to be sacked from Leeds because of recent injuries. Would be an excellent A League acquisition if decent fitness. Has been linked with the Victory.

Kilkenny has left Leeds but is still only 25 and will get snapped up.

So yeah probably most not realistic options (very wishful thinking as I mentioned in initial post). However, I think that it's at least this level of player that we should be targetting - we really need to push the "lifestyle" & "get away from all your problems by coming to the other side of the world!" messages to find the 5% of players that are genuinely keen and excited to live over here (I really don't think this gets pushed enough by the Phoenix, or the Aussie clubs).

It is like saying a lot of things would be a dream come true.

But they won't come and are not what we need, so it will remain a dream.Azevo2011-05-17 08:50:17

Kris Bright named as a non traveling reserve for the All Whites. Still on Ricki's radar.

Got to give Chris James a trial.

Are we still after Adelaide's second keeper? If not, how about Jacob Spoonley?

We were never after Adelaide's number 2.  It was a rumour started on here.

Spoons has been tried and I suspect from an NZ football point of view he's better off playing NZFC than sitting on the bench for the Phoenix.

James has a way to go before he's close to redemption and even then he may have burnt to many bridges with Ricki anyway.

Yeah but so was the adidas kit deal...and Marco to Melbourne....hold on a sec...

HEY GUYS, I heard from a good source that we're gonna sign Landon Donovan as our marquee player. And that New Zealand Football will announce the relocation of their headquarters to Westpac Stadium, which will OFFICIALLY be designated the home stadium of the All Whites. And Justin Bieber will soon announce his plans to join a monastery where he will take a vow of silence.

So what were all those pictures of birthday cakes with the number 20 on them for? Something to do with players turning 20, or under-20 players?
