Sydney offered him a contract a while ago.

By the way, would be happy for van Stratten to be signed up. Provided both he and Pasty don't get injured at the same time...

So name some names then...

sure Coombes has been off the radar. Think he would be useful as a utility player, and that he work hard in the 'Nix setup.

And it isn't just about a game played that long ago- I mentioned his recent half against the All Whites and also the cracker goal he scored in the Club World Cup. Surely not a record many other ASB prem players can match.

How old is Alan Pearce? Who else are you thinking would come into contention?

Definitely think younger players than Coombes (who I don't rate at all in case you haven't noticed ) and Pearce, who were both born in 1983.

Think at least a couple of U20 guys who have been around the ASB Premiership will get their chance. Maybe more.

Jess Van Strattan would be okay. He's a handy replacement, maybe he can finally show the potential that made Juventus sign him.

Otherwise.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dean_Bouzanis

Here is a question I have always had.

If it's good enough for players all around the world to contact the Nix and put themselves forward, and in many cases fly themselves here for trials.  Why is it that players in New Zealand expect the Nix to tap them on the shoulder?

There are DEFINITELY, and I mean no doubt, for sure, nailed on, some players in the ASB Premiership who could nab a spot at the Nix.

If they want it, why aren't they giving it a try?

Maybe they don't want it.  Or maybe they know they aren't up to it?  Not wanting it is hardly an unreasonable position if you've got a good job and can collect a few Trillion playing in the NZFC and just training a couple of times a week.

But I don't think it is up to the Nix to ring these guys and get down on bended knee and invite them to trial.

These lads that are coming over from the Aussie state leages, and further afield, are doing so off their own bat.  Kiwis seem to think they are above that.

Could anti-Nix feeling (of the Knitting Circle variety or the "Terry is a crook" variety) be widespread among ASB Prem players? A goodly proportion of the membership of this forum seem convinced that the Nix is doomed because of rumours that they heard somewhere and/or negative press coverage, so I wouldn't be surprised if many good NZ-based players feel the same. On the other hand, Jess Vanstratten and Nicky Travis aren't immersed in the same sea of gossip and what the French call on dit.

Could young players with talent be susceptible to the common belief of young, talented Kiwis that nothing which happens in NZ can possibly be worthwhile and they're only going to look overseas? (I think Marco might have had a touch of the latter.)

I know Marco pretty well, and he was absolutely over the moon to get a contract with the Phoenix.

And it's certainly worked out okay for both him and Kosta.

Marco got a scholarship rather than putting his hand up as a triallist, though. I don't remember how Kosta was picked.

Arf!

Good point though. I suspect some of those players don't get very good advice from the coaches and administrators at their "home" clubs/franchises either.

most are probably unaware.

I guess paying for it is the issue for some of them. Speaking of trials though, are we looking at another YF Scholarship? Or have i some how missed that this year?

To be fair though, and not wanting to talk down my own work, which usually I make sound much grander than it is, the YF Scholarship only gets you a trial for a week.  Sure we pick up the costs, but you've still got to be willing.

And I was more speaking to your point that players think it's not a big deal.  Marco didn't think that, neither did Kosta.

The club announced a while ago it's intention to run it's own.

We'll probably leave them to it I think, although we haven't sat down and actually discussed it properly yet.

We're about to go balls deep into a website redesign (god I hope the club survives) so could be a bit tight for cash for a while.

I think this is a bit of a stretch. There are very few on here who think that the Nix are going to cease to exist next week. But there are a number who are worried about how we're shaping up for the next season, and whether all the uncertainty will effect our competitiveness in the league. This would also have had a lot to do (I suspect) with a few people not signing (e.g. Rojas, Ward, Hingert), but I'm not sure it would affect locals coming for a trial. Also, I would find it very hard to believe that Vanstratten and Travis haven't heard any of the rumours about the club.
I do agree with one of your other comments however, that I feel a hang of lot better hearing that people are still trialing, and will feel even better if some of them put pen to paper.

Doloras  perhaps its just the impression you've got from a vocal few on here.
I don't think the majority of us think we're doomed. We're all very concerned for the Nix's future of course and everyone has a different way of expressing that concern, from doomed to blind faith and everything in between.
and Hlmphil, love your sig, but the bucket fountain water has never been that blue, has it??

Improving,,on the up, a work in progress from Italiano and the Nix. Bring on the bathroom bling in '24! COYN!

From BBC:

Ex-Blackpool striker Marlon Harewood looks set to snub interest from Millwall and Reading - to sign for Shenzhen Phoenix, a club in the Chinese second division.

Wonder if he'd consider swapping for a different Phoenix.

It's been renamed Guangzhou Fuli in the last week.  Was having lots of money problems but has been bought by a Chinese property tycoon (sound familiar?) and more money is being splashed around and names such as Cisse were mentioned.

How would a scholarship run by the Phoenix differ from an ordinary trial?

I suspect the bad press associated with having a player signed from a fans scholarship leave might have something to do with the decision...
