Sanchez is also named in the same article so it aint him

Can't be Sanchez or another player from the SPL because the newspaper specifically said "continental Europe". I guess that rules out the Irish and Welsh leagues too (phew!).

Just making a point that we've heard lots of talking before but no walking. (as of yet) I hope Ricki isn't pulling our legs and giving us false hope.

I hope i'm wrong and we are getting some superstar who will win us the league.

Bobo Balde would be nice. Scottishbhoy2011-07-16 15:04:01

Serie A...? Holy crap, it better not be anyone from Chievo or Robb and I will have to boycott.

I wouldn't boycott someone leaving Chievo. Although were it a loan rather than a signing, I'd be less enthused.

The article is misleading isn't it.

Says he's going to unveil a mystery star but turns out he hasn't agreed to anything.

Surely Ricki knows better than to mess with us all like that though. My guess is it's a done deal short of some bizarre turn of events such as the Smeltz in China fiasco. The headline could have read "Phoenix secure major signing subject to matrimonial approval".

Er, the person blowing smoke about the sponsorship deal was Terry, not Ricki, unless I'm mighty mistaken. Ricki has never done anything to mislead us. Why would he? If we were going bust he'd be looking for another job.

Ricki specifically said it's a good league by Euro standards, which kind of rules out the SPL.

He also said the first division of that league and not the Premier...

Pretty sure many SPL players could come here and do quite a good job. Liam Miller this season I expect big things from, for example.

For most leagues in Europe, first division is the top division.el grapadura2011-07-16 19:16:58

Whoever it is I hope he's known well enough to cause a stir and raise crowd numbers (as well as help us win the league of course).

Fuck this stupid game

he would be silly to come here at this point of his career- he's doing really well for the national team lately

I recon the player will be coming out of Belgium, Austria, the Netherlands, Poland or similar.  That sort of level as there would be no way the Nix could afford a player from the top leagues of France, England, Germany, Italy or Spain unless he was total crap. disco_mart2011-07-17 19:52:33

More random wiki searching as well, this guy meets the age and good goal scoring record.

is that at my earlier comment?

Unless the Nix's finances are better then we all believe them to be, do you really think we could afford the salary demands of players from these leagues?

I struggle to see a quality European aged 28ish who has been a regular starter wanting to move to NZ from one of the BIG First/Premier leagues for a change in lifestyle.

I'd love to be proved wrong but just cant see it.

As stated, he may be in a relegated side. Perhaps wasn't even getting game time for them?

I think it was his views on Mr. Holman he was lolling at.

From Ricki's comments I infer that the player he's referring to has been playing in the first division of a European league, but his team has been relegated this season and he has an out clause in his contract for relegation. As others have said it won't be one of the major leagues (Italy, France, Germany etc) as we couldn't get anywhere near wage demands.

Here's a possibility: http://www.worldfootball.net/spieler_profil/alberto-regazzoni/

Transferred from Young Boys to St Gallen half way thru last season, who were then relegated, and he's still under contract.
Has a pretty good game-goal ratio (156-23) plus has played a couple of games for Switzerland earlier in his career  which would qualify him as a 'big name' signing.

Ricki did say the agent of the player has brought others over to the A-League previously.
I identified Broich and Van Dijk off the top of my head, but what other european players have played in our league?

Was thinking maybe Kisel with Sydney? He had a pretty big reputation coming over here. Although I couldn't find details on his agent to make any links?

But he's a striker, I thought Terry Ricki said it was an attacking mid.

(Sorry. Got Terry on the brain a bit at the moment. )Doloras2011-07-18 11:39:48

Listed as an attacking mid but wiki reakons he is a striker.

The interesting thing is that his team got relegated last season...

RKC Waalwijk were promoted to the Eredivisie this season so seems unlikely to be him. Would be nice though.
