“Angel of Death” Joseph Mengele fled BA when the Mossad captured Eichman. Mengele drowned years later hiding out in Brazil. He was an evil sick bastard. Klaus Barbie the Butcher of Lyon, hid in plain sight in Bolivia for years. Finally the French managed to get him extradited. The great mime a young Marcel Marceau secreted Jews into Switzerland was one of Barbie’s targets

General Austin Pinochet in Chile had some ex Nazi running his main prison torture camp in a rural secretive area

I like Simon Reeve’s travel shows. One of the stranger places he went to was a large old German community in Paraguay. They have Amish type beliefs of no or limited technology, use horse buggies, marry young etc. They speak Old German with Spanish as their 2nd language

But they have also accumulated great wealth through beef farming and owning the whole supply chain with large abbatoirs, trucking fleets, export companies etc. Their best and brightest getting a US or European Uni education before coming back to be the execs

All a bit strange

Then in Argentina there is a town of German descendants of sailors from the Graf Spree battleship which was scuttled in the Rio Grande off Montevideo. Many of them stayed and settled in Argy. HMSNZ Achilles helped cripple the GS in 1939. They got a tikka tape parade in Auckland when they returned to NZ.

I visited a cemetery in Montevideo where there are a couple of NZ sailors buried from the sea battle. Long way from home
My favourite factoid about Mengele is that he was obsessed with twins, and that's how Geddy Lee from Rush's mother survived Auschwitz. She had a sister 18 months older who looked very like her, and Mengele said "close enough", and she was spared the gas chambers because "the doctor wants to run some more tests on you".

Despite being a Rush fan from way back when (when I was barely out of high school and I still had all my hair), I was unaware of this fact.  Thank goodness for YF.

It must have been one of his more benevolent 'tests'. Because some of the others he conducted on human beings, were beyond barbaric.

The Tattooist of Auschwitz true to life miniseries has a scene where the main character Lali Sokolov encounters Mengele doing an experiment on naked women standing in the snow in the dead of night. How long until they freeze to death.

Series has Naki's pride & joy, Melanie Lynskey playing accidental novice novelist Heather Morris (herself a Kiwi living in Melbs). After a chance encounter Morris juggles her work as a hospital receptionist and mum, interviewing Sokolov and writing about him meeting his wife in Auschwitz. Them both surviving despite the odds. A proper love story. Book a best seller.

Let's not forget that Luftwaffe specifically commissioned 'research' from the camps on cold water immersion survival, for their North Sea flight crew rescue protocols. This was well documented and meticulously annotated.
This remains a contentious area in bioethics (results of this, and other non-consented research, were suppressed and not applied post-WWII  - even by the ever pragmatic USAF - due to the way they were obtained).

I could add a "reply" to my own thread so I copied and pasted this with an update......

This thread has the serious potential to become "Legendary" on the Internet. Similar to the "Sarah from Boots" on a Watford Message Board 20 or so years ago.

The jist of it was her boyfriend "Brian" went to Greece for a Holiday with his mate and came with with an STD present for Sarah.

UPDATE: I finally found some reference to this. I believe the original thread on a Watford Message Board has long since gone. This was from 2002 though, so understandable. There was easily over 1,000 responses to it within 2 weeks and it was pure comedy gold. https://www.theregister.com/2002/07/25/brian_tindle_internet_villain/

Fun fact and I swear a true story.
Geddy Lee sister Susie picked me up for a while for work back in my Toronto days. She managed Rush in the early days and told me all kind of stories, but never mentioned Auschwitz which is understandable, not exactly a light topic.

I saw him in the Galleria dell'Accademia a couple of years ago.

Stunning sculpture, was bigger than I thought it would be, and finding out about the substandard marble used that had been passed over by other sculptor was especially interesting.

Think this thread illustrates the need for some non football threads to be made like bastards in history or something. Or even a political thread.

Lumping Mengele with his experiments with twins in with David Dome, even I will say is extreme and illustrates a lot of frustrated people out there.

Lack of immediate, urgent, focus on football is not frustration.
It is a temporary, fleeting freedom to chinwag at large.
As soon as new potential recruitment target for the Nix is rumoured, this thread will pass, I am very tempted to say, "....like teardrops... in the rain...." (sorry!)

Welcome back Mr Vader. Yes, the quality of the forum is still the same, its like family, same disputes..but what else have we got?
And the club is still run by the same people doing the same things, over and over, hoping for a different result.

Lord of the Rings and King Kong at Christmas, going to midnight screenings. Glory days for cinema. Before the awful over saturation of the comic book ‘universe’ and when the multiplex still was a palace.

When PJ bought the National Film Unit so he could stay in NZ.

In the Matrix you realise that this isn’t the first iteration of the Matrix and that the humans chose the late 90s as the optimal time to live!

Can’t bring myself to read about Weta’s problems.

Vader's post was 61 words.
6 - 1 = 5
Mengele fled Argentina. Argentina's area code is 54.
54 + 5 = 59
$59 million is what Weta FX lost.
Weta Digital was founded in 1993 and renamed to Weta FX in 2021.
1993 x 2021 = 4,027,853
4+0+2+7+8+5+3 = 29
Michelangelo finished the statue of David when he was 29.
The sculpture was moved into the Galleria dell'Accademia where it sits under a dome.

Two David’s - Dumb and dumber - in the news today selling the charter school concept to New Zealanders.

Phoenix the inspiration behind one of a kind charter school - Wellington Phoenix
no different to any of the other charter schools out there - in concept, ie a focus on a particular area - ie sport s performance instead of the army/a particular culture etc. If it brings in cash for Welnix and the board then why not get in on it early?

Of course, we all understand why you would not support this or even be remotely positive about it.

FFS enough of your anti Dome stuff.
Kidding yourself if you think is all Domes work maybe if you took some time to have a look you may understand the concept a little better instead of boringly going straight to the jugular.
As far as im aware there are no schools in NZ with a focus on sport. What is so wrong with looking at opening one that focuses on SPORTS not just football.
