What's really wrong with the Wellington Phoenix?

All I do is post news on the website and help with the odd thing. It’s not an elite thing, I put my hand up to do it and now I do it. I’m sure if you got significant interest, then it’d grow legs.

Personally, I think we aren’t the RBB. People don’t blindly follow some capos. It’s more of a group collective of people who do different things, and have their own opinions. That’s the beauty of the fever zone, anyone can help out, start chants etc. But it makes organising something like a mass protest pretty hard - I genuinely think about a couple dozen people would walk out, some wouldn’t know what’s going on and others would stay.

But if you’re genuinelt passionate about it, the upside is you can organise a protest if you wish. If you gathered a huge following of support for a protest then I’m sure someone in the ear of the club would pass on that something is going on (though a walk out doesn’t really need the permission of the club, so that’s fine). A planned protest with a large following would be hard to ignore on social media.

Yeah it sucks losing this game. Although we did get a bonus game earlier in the season when the Canberra game fell through. This definitely could have been communicated better though, and I’m not convinced it was worth it because of the fact it pisses fans off at a time when the club really needs to turn its negative image around. I really would’ve thought that was more important.

I get why they did it, and they would’ve weighed all this up and come to the tough decision that they did. I disagree with it, but I do realise that comes from my biased viewpoint as a fan - it’s not my money being lost so of course I’d put less weighting to that part of the decision.

I’m pretty pissed off, but also kind of understand how the situation came about. It’s confusing!

and that Canberra game was another example of a moronic fudge  you to fans. An even bigger fudge you than taking a game to Auckland

Yeah that’s fair. Especially when it caused a delay in the season memberships. Plus taking a game out of the country is a far bigger step than taking one around the country.

I would say people are protesting now.
Look how small the crowds are and how few people there is in the YF zone.

The crowds seem at about our usual minimum to me. But yeah, people are voting with their feet. Crowds won’t improve until we start winning and turning that negative public image around - situations and decisions like this don’t help with that at all, I agree.

I tell you, there is more to this than just being perceived as shark owners of a football club. They are hanging on in the hope that the club will end up having some real value and either sell or use it as collateral for other business dealings. I can't accept for a moment that these top businessmen aren't aware of business 101 where you bend over backwards to try and keep them happy. Not alienate them at every opportunity.

Don't buy it.  I really don't see this as some sort of Grand Conspiracy.

I have to be honest I used to think like that, but see this:

this is from the last game at QBE.

This guy brought his very wee new born to the game. He deserved a free 4-3-3!

The new double decker buses from town are good, quick and comfy. The pub in the front of the mall was quite decent. The 4-3-3 is top notch.

There were a lot of new fans (see above!) and there was a good mood- helped by Kosta, FInkler and am I remembering correctly- Smeltzy?!?

There was a bus load of high school footballers from Northland came down and Patrick lead them in chants.

It was a good chance to spread the Phoenix love.

It's a crap thing for the club to do to Wellington fans, but I hope it goes as well as my memory of the last one!

Glad to hear you had a pleasant experience last time out. It's always a pleasure to see/meet new fans.

What I'm getting at is that all of the above would've been possible at Eden park - adding that historically it has had a higher turnout than QBE. This is due to the facilities and more importantly easy transport links. There are several decent pubs, restaurants, etc within close walking distance and of you're real broke it's about 30mins-1hr walk from the CBD (which also has loads of accommodation for travelling fans).

Yup QBE is terrible. After the last All Whites game they weren't letting any cars leave the carpark for 30 minutes? Ridiculous.

I'd take Mt Smart over it any day.

Yeh, I've done both.

Eden Park is very, very expensive to run and requires about 15,000 or maybe 20,000 to break even.

I think they lost money at Eden Park last time the game was there.

Essentially to balance the books and keep the primarily Auckland based sponsors on board for the seasons to come. I was angry and Dome, but now I feel really sorry for him, having to battle with a board that wants to make a profit and try to keep us happy. all this when the team is failing on the field.

why the fudge do we have "Auckland-based" sponsors???

Well had decent game experiences at both Mt Smart and QBE (as well as Hamilton), but there aren't any pubs that close to Mt Smart! QBE had quite a good buzz during the last youth WC too. It just needs to have a decent pitch, decent weather, good active support in a decent crowd supported by the stadium and security and a good game.

A lot to ask I know.

Went to one discounted Knights game there. They were totally honking. Never looked like scoring and Bazeley seemed to be their best player.

I think it’s a bit like Westpac too in that there is a certain threshold of a crowd where the atmosphere becomes amazing. But the stadium is so big the nix aren’t going to reach that threshold this season. When it’s below that attendance threshold it’s a bit of a lifeless concrete jungle.

Whereas QBE can pack out that one stand and it’s actually becomes quite a fun place to watch a football match.

So I don’t mind them choosing to play at QBE when in auckland.

Understand where Tree Fiddy is coming from. Used to think exactly that. Last two games I've been to there have changed my mind. But it helps to be able to access the busway to get home.

Yeah well I have two tickets with my son to go down to Wellington for this Saturday's game versus Perth. I realise it's not the club's fault but I'm somewhat pissed off - bought the tickets in December for my once a season game in Wellington.

I can fully understand the anger at the rearranged last game of the season from Wellington to Auckland. It's really very very poor.

Plus as an Irishman the March 17 game could interfere with my patriotic duties!

Hi all,

Australia here, here to help.

1. WELLINGTON IS TALKING TO THE WRONG AUSTRALIAN

By that I mean, the Aussie Soccer Community is largely run by Euro-Aussies, so to 'talk' to the Australian Soccer Community, the Phoenix need to talk to the Euro-Aussies in Australia, not the anglo-Aussies

2. FORM ALLIANCES WITH GOOD AUSSIE NPL CLUBS

Similar to point 1 above, the Euro-Aussies involved at NPL level may feel alienated from the Main Show, as the Nix are alienated by many in the Australian Soccer Community, the Nix should form alliances with Euro Historic-based NPL clubs.

3 REMEMBER WHO IS PAYING THE BILLS

If Fox Sports are the source of income for the players wages, then the Nix should ask "what do Australian TV audiences want to see from us, to watch our games". If that means hiring Serbs/Croats/Italians and Greeks, until Wellington find its feet, then cater to that market.

4, WHAT KIWI SOCCER THINGS WORK IN AUSTRALIA

Kosta Barby and Marco Rojas worked in Australia, especially in Melbourne (a rather cosmopolitan city), as they are Kiwi-Ethnics, sending over plain old Joe Smith from Auckland won't excite the Aussie Soccer Fraternity, unless plain old Joe Smith from Auckland offers something to the Aussie Soccer Market that is NOT there otherwise....

The club worked when Pignata was CEO, as he "got" the Australian Soccer market....Pignata is Italo-Australian....

Nighty night.

Easiest way would be to stand at the entrance to wherever the zone is (I haven't ever travelled to Auckland for a game so don't know the layout) and hand out fliers about the protest.

The 'zone' at an Auckland game is mixed in with other grade sections and is generally a complete cluster fudge with people sitting behind yelling 'SIT DOWN!' over and over.

Sure but people don't know me from Jack either while they are in a position and have represented the fan base at times but much easier to keep that nice friendly position by not rocking the boat. There was a big discussion between a few people about it on twitter. Differing opinions, as I said in an earlier post - that’s the beauty of the fever. We aren’t the RBB.

I’m on the side of disagreeing with the decision, but am not personally inclined to organise a whole protest - I don’t have the time (I already volunteer a lot of it to football and fever stuff), and I don’t really think it’d be that effective - like I said earlier I think I a dozen people would walk out, some wouldn’t know what’s going on, while the rest would stay. But again like I said in an earlier post, if you feel passionately enough about it and think it can work then by all means go ahead and organise one. Literally nobody is stopping you.

Also another thing I said in an earlier post (I’m really just repeating myself and you’re clearly not reading at this point, so I’m out) while I’m pissed off with the decision, I can also see how it came about. We got a bonus game when the Canberra game fell through, and while it could have been better communicated they did say 2-3 would be taken away - I believe another venue also fell through before eventually they would’ve lined up QBE. So while I’m pissed off, I also see how the unfortunate situation came to be the way it was.
