Gap between academy and first team will naturally close this season. The league is set to be shorn of quality due to cap reduction (will be especially evident in lower quality of import) mixed with higher outflow of quality players due to WC year (Okon, Beach etc).

Think a few teams will be quite underwhelming on paper compared to what we’re used to.
Yes. Bring on the derby and Melbourne City/Victory then. Should be some closer derby games than before and AAMI Park should be interesting.

Yes im fully aware they need to assemble a squad but we are 4 months from kick off so some of you really do need to cut them some slack. At least we have  a coach.
Would imagine they have been looking but until they got decisions from Rufer and Singh they couldnt nail down just what type of player they needed or what they had to spend. For me a real buggar it looks like we will lose both of the young players who were judged by some to be the next big things.
Personally i would be very surprised if Welnix will want to head into our 20th season by under funding the mens team. The rubbish some post about what they invest shows some just havnt taken the time to find out and prefer to post flat out lies.

True. The club will know people  expect a serious response after the past 2 seasons and horror derby results. They will probably get for new foreign players:
●Striker
●Winger/2nd striker
●Attacking midfield
●Defensive midfield
Then look for a few from Australia for another attacking midfield, another defensive midfield, a centre back. Then 1 Phoenix academy or OFC Pro League winger or something to replace GSR.

Yeah and the lot up north still have a decent first XI and are probably finalising their coach in the next week or two (given they have a game against Spurs coming up).

People are probably like this because we have had two bang average seasons in a row, and nothing has really changed besides promoting Greenie to manager (with not really a manager bounce).

Payne, Eze, Oluwayemi, James, Retre leaving, potentially LBS and Rufer, doesn't bode well for optimism. (I know it's every season, but after two bang average ones, its more worrisome).

I know I can post 'bad takes and what not' but I'll gladly let it play out and hope I'm wrong but when you see the rest of the league signing players and making decisions, it can make me a bit cautious of the upcoming season.

A signing we could have tried was Tzanev who just re-signed at Huddersfield to sit on the bench, for example why couldn't we have tried signing him as a non-import GK.

How do you know we didn't try? Most Kiwi footballers would choose to stay in the UK pyramid rather than come to the A-League regardless of promises around minutes. It's not like Tzanev has lived here much in the last ten years anyway, and he has no direct connection to the Nix.

Tzanev hasn’t lived in NZ for 20 years (since age 9). His links to Aotearoa are tenuous at best.

Very slim odds he would ever consider an ALM move

Worth noting LBS’s dad is a Brit, so likely has a UK passport if that is still useful getting work visa organised etc

He’s a long way from being Championship ready I think. So maybe first half of the season o playing for Pompey’s U21s then a loan deal down in L1/L2?

But yeah nice to see him a fellow ex Nix teenager Perniskie get UK club deals in the same week. The attacking future of the AWs?

And for Pompey fans, LBS has been solely focused on football for only about the last 4 years. Prior to that juggling being a top BMX rider as well. Hence the chunky thighs

Yes, saw he had a British Dad - makes things simpler in terms of our quota of non-UK nationals we're permitted in our squad.

We don't have a development squad - it's academy and first team.  Assuming a deal goes through I would imagine we'd bring him in, take a look at him, and potentially seek to find a loan if we don't think he can be challenging for a place on the bench immediately.  That said, his age means he wouldn't count towards our squad number limit, so they may keep him around for numbers alone.

This every season rubbish just gets me, have some of you not seen the changes in most other A League teams rosters. People make out  as if its only a Phoenix thing when it isnt it happens at nearly all A League teams think Brisbane had 15 leave.
I get the frustration im as anxious about the new season as others but some of the stuff  that gets posted is just ridiculous. With the WC going on think they deserve to be cut some slack but do agree we need to start hearing some news shortly other than just some of the rumors that are flying around.
As for the continual demands of some that Phoenix should be telling them about things going on thats just plain idiocy thinking they have to tell fans some of the stuff being demanded. Dont see other clubs telling fans about things they have going on but some seem to have this expectation that the Phoenix should.

Yes. A number of teams are having a number of players leave and are taking their time finding affordable replacements with the state of the league. I think the Phoenix will get more players for Chris Greenacre by end of the month and into August. They aren't late. They will get an understanding of where Alex Rufer and Sarpreet Singh want to be next season then I think they will get the new players in the weeks after that. James McGarry signed already I think because he clearly wanted to be here. Others would require more time negotiating and between other offers, so later.

I'm not saying that the club should be telling us things that are going on that's not announced.

I just thought the club may have updated on Rufer given he is the captain.

The window is weird because of the WC so hopefully pieces start falling into place late July/early August to ease some of the fans anxiousness

Rufer's contract will probably be one of the harder ones to finalise.
He has openly said he wants to explore off shore options,
Nix will want to keep him but have not been one to pay over the odds just to do o.
Rufer's options might not have increased as much as hoped given he didnt play a minute at the WC.
Rufer is off contract so he can almost take a long as he wants to finally decide if he stays or goes.

He can take as long as the Nix are willing to hold the door open for him - a certain Callan Elliot found out this was not for as long as he would have thought/liked

I am not sure you can compare the decision-making for the club for Callan Elliot vs for Alex Rufer.
Mind you I am not asking you to compare the players, only the likelihood the club would let Rufer decide while he keeps playing on.  He has done the hard yards for the club. This was not the case for Elliot at the time of his contract debacle.

ITK Jets fans are utterly convinced he signed a pre-contract with them months ago.

So they believe he probably has overseas get out clauses & that is why he hasn't been announced yet.

So I'm not holding much hope about him staying.

Elliot had the club’s recent experience with Devlin in the background too, allowing him to leave early, only to see him arrive at Newcastle.

Bit sad, because both club and player did well by each other with football matters I thought.

Rufer clearly said he would decide on his future post World Cup.
Fair enough, and no reason to doubt he wasn't being truthful about that.

I mean, given what went before the end of the season, that doesn’t strike me as surprising? I would have been happy to see him stay.

Yes not the biggest loss, but it's nice to have squaddies with A-League experience like him before going straight to the next generation of academy kids off the bench. To not hold on to any of the senior players we bought in (minus Tuiloma on a longer deal) isn't good, even if half the departures were sanctioned by Greenie/the club.

Of course, if there are several new recruits just around the corner with arguably better CVs, then no harm no foul.

Chiefy identified a lack of experienced guys in their mid-late 20s as a problem a year ago, and recruited as such prior last season, incl Ramy.

Less an issue this season as the younger brigade like Piper, Sheridan, Conchie, LKH & Hughes have another 12 mths experience under their belts. Even AKH.

But yeah you still feel Greeny will need to recruit some non visas Kiwis/Aussies in that 25-30 age bracket again. Esp with Payne gone, and maybe Rufer as well.

“We’re still looking at a center back role and potentially an attacking midfield, a wide sort of player, and we want that younger sort of player as well."

Quote from Mark Milligan today. Maybe they have given up waiting? Or Rufer has found an overseas deal.

From what I saw of Ramy for us, and from what I saw of Singh for us and at the World Cup, I am not gutted to lose either. Hope Sarpreet can rediscover his best in Portugal but not expecting it.

if playing in portugal's league 2 is where he wants to go then all good, he came here to get into the AW's, got injured and didnt really show much form when he did play.
the potential was there but he knows his time is running short to make it big in any league so maybe this is the right move for him.

I'm guessing Singh probably wanted the Nix to overpay to keep him here. Glad we didn't. Lots of signings to be made...

Honestly I think it would have been much better for his career to spend a season in the A League. Somewhere familiar and well below the level he can potentially play at. Very possible that he would have played himself into a rich vein of form and looked very good by seasons end.

Lots of eyes on the A League. A better move is possible after a good season here when compared to second tier in Portugal I bet.

Farense are quite a notable Portuguese club and the biggest club in the Algarve. A good season in the Segunda could very well help you make a move to the Primeira. Laliga 2 is of course right over the border as well.

But Farense have had a few bad seasons, almost suffering back to back relegations last season. Only surviving by winning the relegation playoff against old Portuguese champions Belenenses, who are slowly climbing back up after their fans won the club back and restarted in the district leagues.

Maybe he should’ve stayed in the ALM to build some consistency, gotta be hard constantly shifting clubs. Good luck to him and hopefully we can get some Nix signings soon now that all this stuff is getting sorted out.

P.S. Leiria is nice but it’s hard to beat those Algarve beaches

If this is true this is heading for our biggest rebuild for some time. Bloody annoying heading into our 20th season. Afraid from watching dont have great confidence about any of the young talent in the reserves being able to bridge the gap and do the job. The loss of GSR and LBS making it worse. Come on Wahinix.
Season goes to badly might have to review my all games in Aussie plans.

My only memory of watching Cassidy is he seemed to have a bit of size about him, which should help with making the jump to pro mens football.
I mean it's definitely part of the reason why LBS has played more in the ALM than other talented 18 yr olds.

From short video clip the other day, it also looks like Nathan Walker has done a bit of bulking up.

Unlike Ballane, I feel some (not all) of Hughes, Sheridan, LKH, AKH, Walker and Conchie will step up this season. To be fair Hughes is basically already there as a quality ALM starter. Throw Piper in the mix, who hopefully improves again on the last campaign. That 3rd/4th season around the first team squad seems when a breakout career moment can happen.

McGarry & Tuiloma as the older head Kiwis, taking over from Payne and Rufer (if gone).

Alot is going to rest on getting the visa selections right. That and unlike last season limited GK gaffes.

my one hope for Piper is that he gets locked into a position, he needs to focus on ebing the best buldozing striker he can be, or the best defensive player he can be - not both.

No you misinterupt what i meant, didnt mean those that have been floating around the team for a 2/3 years. Needs to be a dramatic improvement in all those you mention apart from Hughes if they are going to be a big part of the rebuild. None of the others have shown consistant form or any thing that suggests they deserve and can handle regular starts. Im talking about the next lot that should be due to be introduced this year.
Even Bill has to lift his game as he really didnt show a lot last year.
Remember its not just Rufer and Payne but nearly the whole  attack,im a Piper fan but not to lead our attack

Sucks we're not signing Rufer or Singh but if we are signing Hollman there are only 4 spots in the starting 11 to fill which we can do with our import slots, the thing that's going to be more of a concern is the depth of the squad so hopefully theres some decent local options around to finish off the squad.

Hughes is already class. Him and Bill his a very good pair of CBs and we’ve got every hope in McGarry. Sheridan has a chance to prove himself, but I wouldn’t have called him an obvious starter. This is partly not his fault, playing CB, CM and LB under Chief. But partly he hasn’t quite made the step up.

Conchie has almost gone backwards, tbh. Probably needs to step up or be released…

AKH hasn’t shown he can be a number one by any stretch of the imagination.
LKH will be a good cover at CB and LB.

Piper…is different but effective. I like watching him tbh and I hope he plays up front.

Would be great for Cassidy and some other academy talent to unveil itself this season. Would be a very pleasant surprise.

With Payne and LBS leaving I was feeling a little meh, but thinking of the cash, Walker returning, Hollman already signed (?), Kazu returning and a bunch of import spots available I’m feeling good about things again. Loke is still around to deputise at RB?

It won’t be the team I was expecting, it’ll be something else good instead.
