I think The Port is a perfectly good name. But, as the T-AFC chant goes "you can stick your Black Knights branding up your arse"

Other than Foley, does anyone like "Black Knights"?? I have yet to hear of anyone. If they were serious about it, the shirt badge should've been a black knight.

Amazing isn’t it? Remember not that long ago the Aussies were looking at getting rid of us.

Pretty hyped up about this game and it's only Wednesday. A dream of having 2 NZ based A League clubs has come true and now our first ever "real" Derby game. Part of me is proud of football in NZ and also of the A League for taking the chance. Massive day coming.

This comes across as a little bit offensive to certain people (like myself). Would rather not have to see/hear comments like that. I know you were just having a laugh but it’s still a bit uncalled for

Interesting to see Tyler St Sport (Foleys bar) is unable to be booked between 2 - 730 pm. Hopefully they're setting up standing room for the fans!

If as he said it goes back to those Polish dudes who wore wings on their regular armor that’s fairly cool. NGL. Get in the DnD, LARP, medievalist and crusade communities!

I can’t believe we haven’t been able to manage a decent Monty Python themed riposte.

There was a brief bit of time when the club got announced with the branding that there looked like there would be a supporters group called the "Knights Watch" all dressed in big black cloaks swearing the oath from ASOIAF to the club. Glad The Port has come out and we've got our ships horn and all that but there's a small part of me which would have found that very fun to be a part of. There was a fella in mock armour (made out of the finest castle-forged aluminum) at the first game in the crowd, think you can see him in a few shots.

I will say “Wellington is the home of football.” has been an effective catch cry. So effective, most people I see on socials think “The Port” is the team’s nickname.

Well, that’s an enjoyable autoedit. But not the catch cry I meant.

Best armor I saw was at the Gabba and about 20 blokes in very crafted plate armor made out of XXXX cardboard crate boxes. Can’t remember if they had helmets.

Bonuses: very lightweight, unlike other kinds of armor.
Looks very cool.

Problems: provides little to no protection against any serious weapon known to be used in combat.

Rest in Peace The Chamberlain!

I knew ye well enough, but no half as well as I woulda liked!

I guess one problem being these fan photos are all 5 or 6 years old…
Tyler St is comparatively limited, though the beer is plenty good enough I suppose. Some glorious names and brews up there.

I think the Auckland away shirt is much better than their home shirt, but the away shirt looks terrible with black shorts. Why not have blue shorts?

Well, this was it. The first ever derby and while the disappointment sits deep, what an occasion it was! 26k, cracking weather and bomb atmosphere and banter.

Just saw some footage of the marches of both sets of fans. Must say hats off to both supporter groups. Who'd have thought we'd ever have this football culture develop at our own doorstep? Absolutely amazing 👏

Absolutely can't wait for the next derby in 5 weeks time, and while the result is hard to swallow I think football won today and that's something to celebrate

As a Nix supporter I am gutted by the loss. But I begrudgingly except that this Auckland team are quite good at football. Tactically they were good. Their high press eventually led to the first goal. They effectively stopped the Nixs counter attacking game. They have good squad depth and some decent players. I expect they will be there abouts at the business end of the season.

What a day for Foley. Auckland FC win, they were the better team overall, I like the attacking intent, and then AFC Bournemouth beat Man City.

They also sponsor the stadium Auckland play at, not to mention had their name on the Phoenix billboard outside Mt Smart the weekend before the derby.

Don’t think they’re taking sides here.

They will have let the clubs have those spots at those times for free. The promotion for gomedia as a brand and electronic billboards far outstrips rental costs for a couple of hours. Thats marketing 101.

Above Phoenix threads Forbidden for me, so goes here.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/360474730/special-meaning-behind-auckland-fc-midfielder-jake-brimmers-goal-celebration

The Phoenix invited trouble by playing from the back all game and Brimmer had been paying close attention to goalkeeper Josh Oluwayemi’s movements while watching from the bench in the first half.

When he came on in the second, he correctly predicted that Oluwayemi would cut inside on his right foot and play a pass down the middle.

The ball cannoned into Brimmer and he seized on the loose ball, chipping the goalkeeper and celebrating with his fingers in his ears before scoring again in stoppage time.

“It was a moment in the game where he’s probably switched off a little bit and I’ve over-covered to the left and gambled that he would cut back inside,” Brimmer reflected.

“He’s a good goalkeeper, good with his feet, but luckily for me I just managed to read him and anticipated his pass, and it was a good finish.”

So a loss of concentration from Josh. Gotta do better next time and we’ve got to give him a margin for error by taking more of our chances so it’s 2 or 3 we’re up by in the 88th minute. I’d help with the celebrations, shirts off etc for us too tb sure…

Fascinating. What with Ufuk then Chiefy, & now Corica plus Brimmer, who'd've thought imported Aussies would do so much to raise the local footballing IQ? We probably now need some Aussie administrators.

yk I'm kinda surprised by the lack of jafas appearing after the derby. With the steady stream of trolls appearing before the derby even happened I thought for sure a bunch would flood the forum to make fun of us after we lost. However, to the best of my knowledge none have appeared. No Port Solider 2.0 or anything.

I'm guessing all the ones that would do that started too early and got banned before they could do troll us for the loss?

Well speaking for myself, it's taken until now to get back to Jaffaland. Torrential rain driving south ... Pre & post match Welly festivities... freezing winds... SH1 closed between Taupo & Tokoroa... Knackered.
