Talks about how Foley got sport going in Vegas when everyone said it was too hard, sounds very much like Auckland.

Dome's thinking the crowd at Eden Park may hit 25,000 against SFC in March. They got  8,327 on 25th Nov against Melbourne City at Mt Smart.
https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/350178676/wellington-phoenix-crowd-record-could-fall-if-league-men-hype-builds

Sometime tell Mr Foley he's basing his new franchise at the wrong ground, until a a shiny downtown stadium is built.

Yes factors at play like Nix are now top of the table, some hype is building, is ex coach Uffy coming to town etc etc. But the consistently pull in the crowds at EP. It's just so much better as a game day experience. Plus Nix are unbeaten there??

Depends what you are into I guess. Love the energy and vibe of Sandringham pre game. Love that if I feel energetic I can walk there from the city, and/or walk back into the CBD fringe like K Road's bars post game. Otherwise lots of public transport options.

Also I like the feel of Mt Eden, with it's leafy nearby streets, plus the fact Eden Park has a lot of history. It's also very central to all parts Auckland. On all these  facets it's superior to Mt Smart in ugly industrial souless Penrose. The crowd sizes are regularly bigger at EP for football games, so I can't be the only one feeling the same. Sure there is more hype around the Nix now than in November, and Dome is maybe being overly optimistic for the SFC game in March (it may end up pissing with rain on the day) - but if the crowd is 3x actually larger in size - well that's a loud statement.

But yeah also helps that my uncle lives just off Dominion Road, so I have been to EP alot over the years for rugby, cricket and Nix playing there.

Plenty allowed to happen in the backyard around Eden Park. Imagine plopping down the league 9s or a Six60 concert on Mt Hobson or in Ponsonby or along the wealthy suburbs there. Or even a night time ABs test. Then you’d find out about NIMBY’s I’m fairly sure! Just look at the amount the league club in super gentrified Grey Lynn gets the police called on them for existing.

Sorry a bit off topic.

Besides you’re hearing concerns about 6s on Sandringham Road now because it suits the waterfront development! Similar concerns about golf balls at Chamberlain occurred when the drums were beating loudly for it to become an 9 hole, apartments and a public park.

There would still be nine holes? But I suppose that housing/playing fields in the inner area can be built somewhere else. 30 minutes down the motorway. "Not in our back yard", to coin a phrase.

Good to keep in mind that now that EP can host concerts you'll struggle to find a concert venue of that scale worldwide surrounded by that much detatched wooden housing. For a national stadium EP's location will always be the exception, not the norm worldwide. Trying to flip that around and claim it's the residents who are exceptional is just supporting an EP agenda (which of course represents private interests) which has for decades condemned this city to sub-standard stadium infrastructure.

The Phoenix and the council did nothing to advertise or actually discuss their side of the agenda whereas the rugby club got organised and put out flyers, etc. It's as much the Phoenix fault that nothing happened as it is the nimbys.

The cynic in me would hypothesise that the stadium announcement occurred the season before the Phoenix License was due to be renewed and might have been a bit of a theater for negotiations that weren't going well.

The anti-chamberlain crowd are a huge bug bear of mine. Golf is one of the most popular sports in the country. Chamberlain is used from sunrise to sunset, every single day, rain or shine. It's the only affordable golf course in Auckland, which means it opens up sport to a whole world of people who'd "otherwise never so much as go for a walk" (actual quote from quite a big lad I'd played with there once). Ok, you can't walk your dog there, but a city should support different uses and Chamberlain's numbers would easily outnumber dog walkers, and there's alternative options in Western Springs and Fowlds Park 5 minutes walk away.

There's a much better argument to turn a significant number of the football, rugby, and cricket soccer fields into housing (which I'd be totally against) - yet Chamberlain gets all the criticism because hurr durr goLf iS fOr RiCh PeOpLe.

"In 2020, our resource consent permitted Eden Park to hold up to six concerts in any 12-month period .... With Pink's two shows on 8 and 9 March and Coldplay's three shows on 13, 15 and 16 November, it left Eden Park with only one concert slot this year"

No National Stadium should have this level of restrictions. Unless this is overcome, Eden Park shouldn't even be a consideration.

Well this is just misinformation from Sautner. Taylor Swift tour dates were announced in June 2023. Coldplay tour dates were announced in November 2023.

Perth and Brisbane are also not on the tour, and you'll find as per this article that the dates got sandwiched in the wider tour and she simply didn't have the time for the whole region.

5 months is a relevant enough space of time. I don't think Taylor Swift's team were caught dawdling while organising one of the biggest tours in history - especially given we know they were able to pencil in dates at Brisbane in advance as per the article. And if somehow Coldplay had pencilled in 3 whole dates and then Swift's team approaches EP, I don't think Sautner quitely and stoically honours the resource consents without piping up and then waits for the week Taylor Swift touches down in aussie to have a whinge and make a vague non statement to the press about consents. Why she didn't come is all in the article anyway.

That whole interview sounds like BS. She wasn’t going to Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide or Canberra. The guy couldn’t confirm that EP had the space to fit the road show in the space there.

The two stadiums in Aussie Swift is visiting historically host between 80k to 115k.
As someone said EP gets away with talking crap and the papers lap it up. It’s how they lose sympathy too.
How much are they subsidised a year? They’re always cap in hand.

Even if the article is “bullshark” the resource consent restrictions are very real.

Okay, so Taylor Swift gets to play… then Coldplay doesn’t???

Not fit for a national stadium.

Still the Most Nimby part of NZ as Swift has proven.

I really don't think the Nix ever took the Petone site seriously. Was just smoke and mirrors and sadly some here fell for it hook line and sinker

AV saves Auckland FC from becoming the Black Knights, by informing them's 2nd Best's completed survey should not be taken seriously.

And sounds like the week leading up to Nix's game against SFC in Auckland, will be interesting!  Both NZ clubs competing for media space, some banter about next season no doubt. Love it!

Oh and Bazeley opens the door for Corica to speak with Wood, Boxy, Tuiloma about comingt onboard for future ALM seasons two & three. Wood I reckon a strong option for season 2016/17, after 2016 WC.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/350183319/auckland-leagues-club-unveil-name-colours-kit-next-month

Corica and McFlynn have been in Auckland for the first time since their appointments last December over the past 10 days, meeting with local clubs, NZ Football and other interested parties, as well as attending the Halberg Awards.

They were joined by the third member of the club’s fledgling football department, former Socceroos and Sydney FC analyst Doug Kors, who has come on board as head of recruitment.

The trio have been busy in that regard, already signing seven players for their first campaign and aiming to have around 15 in place by mid-March. Corica is also starting to put together his backroom staff, with his team’s first pre-season set to begin on July 1.

None of Becker, Corica and McFlynn were willing to divulge any names, noting that some of the signings were still contracted to other clubs, though McFlynn did confirm the seven signings boasted “a sprinkling” of All Whites caps.

Sources outside the club identified a list of five players who have either been signed or are priority targets: Goalkeeper Michael Woud, defender Francis de Vries and midfielder Cam Howieson, who have all played for the All Whites, and midfielder Luis Toomey and forward Jesse Randall, two under-23 internationals with Paris Olympics hopes.

Corica played alongside All Whites coach Darren Bazeley at Walsall in England’s lower leagues right before they both came down under for the first season of A-League Men in 2005 - Corica with Sydney and Bazeley with the New Zealand Knights.

He said visiting Abu Dhabi to watch the All Whites play Egypt and either Croatia or Tunisia would provide an excellent opportunity to learn more about about the state of New Zealand men’s football.

"We're going to go and watch the games and hopefully meet a few of the players as well, that we haven't met already. It shows that we're very keen on New Zealand players and getting as many back as possible.”

In mid-January, the club sought feedback on the
potential name Auckland Black Knights in a survey that was shared in several places, including a Facebook group set up by an eager fan looking to build support for the new teams.

While responses to the survey itself, including trolling ones from fans of New Zealand’s sole existing professional football club, the Wellington Phoenix, were private, the comments in the Facebook group were largely negative, noting the connection the “Knights“ has with the failed former A-Leagues club and that it had no link to Auckland.

The club’s headcount currently sits at five, with Becker, Corica, McFlynn and Kors joined by
chief commercial officer Mike Higgins, best known in football circles for being involved in the One Shot for Glory campaign around the All Whites’ World Cup qualification push in 2010.

Becker said he had come away from initial meetings with local clubs enthused about the extent to which the city might get behind its new football teams, with Auckland’s entry into A-League Women scheduled for 2025.

“Someone like (former All White) Fred de Jong at Ellerslie is already talking about how they’ll get everyone to come to their clubrooms before games, have a beer or two, then travel on a bus together to Mt Smart.

So none of the 5 named players are from an official source and could be bollocks. The name Black Knights cannot be real, the simple history with the Knights in a black kit will surely kill that dream, besides it has nothign to do with NZ./Auckland in any way.

Interesting that Mike Higgins is now their chief commercial officer. Him & Tim Brown I think are good mates from 2009 One Shot for Glory campaign. Be interesting to see if Brown is planning to get involved at all. You'd hope he'd choose the Nix for any NZ football investment.

‘including trolling ones from fans of New Zealand’s sole existing professional football club’

I definitely told them to go for Black Knights. TBH, though, if they’re good they’ll wipe any lingering stigma and if it’s Foley’s preferred name and meaningful for him, it’ll get more attention. Solanke on loan or something like that!

Name now decided. "A strong football heritage name" eh. "Which also speaks to our ambition and the global piece." Interesting. Intriguing.
Ajax Auckland ... Auckland Albion ... Inter Auckland ... Real Auckland ...
Gawd! I hope it won't be corny as hell

as an Aucklander and a previous Kingz and Knights fan and a current Nix fan I would have no problem with Black Knights - it's just a name and I could really care less if that is what Bill with the money wants.  I think there are much more important things to get right in the setup, some things that the Nix (although they nailed the name and marketing) didn't do so well.

EDIT: Just to add to this someone in the facebook group for this team said he wouldn't mind if it was Auckland FC and then the nickname was the Black Knights - I am on board for that as well.

Can't see them going for both Sail and Woud. Sail seems to have won his place back & playing well, so might stick it out.

They say they have 7 players signed up, so maybe those 5 mentioned in the article + Rojas/Smith?
As I understand it those two have not put pen to paper. I also understand the seven includes at least one Australian.

Grant - cant stand that cod.
If he signs then the rivalry will be immense, of course he'll score against us game one.
