Wynyard Pt now has an 8000 seater one directional grandstand erected in 3 weeks to cater for a weekend of sailing. Go figure.

'Club mode'. BC Place in Vancouver one well known stadium that already does it.
Blocking off the upper tiers with basically giant curtains. Not exactly sure but I think the lower tiers can move in closer to the sidelines.

https://www.hksinc.com/what-we-do/projects/auckland-stadium/
To maximize flexibility, the stadium’s upper decks can adapt to smaller events, starting with a “club mode” with a capacity of 25,000.

Damn, if this and Foley's proposal for Western Springs go ahead, we will be spoilt for choice; all we will need is a proper test cricket ground. If it were up to me I'd put that at Eden Park no 2 and demolish no 1 for housing, except for one stand to be kept as a museum

I would prefer Western Springs as the Test Cricket ground - could possibly do one dayers/T20's as well.
Seems silly to bowl over Eden Park with so much money spent on it but not sure it's viable to survive on just some all blacks/blues games - so maybe keep the #2 for the Aces/Hearts/community cricket.
Sell North Harbour but keep the surrounding fields for community sport, setup Mt Smart as a regional training base with #2 and the old OFC fields.
Develop the new waterfront stadium for Auckland FC, Warriors, and if you bowl Eden Park Blues and All Blacks/Black Ferns games - not sure where the concerts that are at Eden Park now go?

Surely if Eden Park was bowled the concerts would go to the new waterfront stadium - its not in a residential zone so shouldn't be stuck with the same restrictions for concerts as Eden Park

They're both fine options, but I suppose I'd be sad to see Eden Park no longer used. A waterfront stadium would be a better option for big concerts too (right next to Vector Arena)

Were there any horror stories of access in and out of the temporary 8000 seat stand that was built on Wynward wharf for the SailGP last weekend?

Having been to many stadiums across the world, I see nothing worth keeping at Eden park. It has no truly markable architectural elements. It's a mess best turned into something else.

99% agree, but the northern facade has those nice gables to mirror the villas in the area. Would look nice on apartments.

Ha ha ha, I only saw this on third reading, those pathetic losers:

TAU went public looking for expressions of interest (EOI) on what to do with Western Springs from June 7 to July 19 last year. Auckland FC put their hands up to say they were interested, but no one involved in speedway did.

“The process was short and low-key,”
[Save Our Speedway honcho] Jones said.

“The EOI did not mention speedway and TAU had told everyone that speedway was out of there. We currently know of three parties that are interested.”

However,
on June 8, the day after the announcement from TAU, Save Our Speedway published on its Facebook page all the details about the EOI.

And they go on to argue that Speedway management are lying about not making money?

Auckland FC will 'one day' be free from sharing with rival codes

Mostly a recap of what's already been posted here, although this caught my eye:

Auckland FC coach Steve Corica does not expect to be at the club when football finds its place in the city's sporting landscape.

I don't know how long Corica's contract runs for, but maybe that says something about his and the club's expectations around timing?

Read somewhere that Corica’s family have remained in Sydney. That’s tough, just ask Marko

But maybe it’s just one more season at AFC, then a transition to prickly Danny

Between finding a location, getting resource consent and building it, you are probably looking at 4-5 years minimum. The lifespan of coaches in football isn't as long as that. You either get fired for doing badly or if you do well, move to better a better gig.

Sounds like the lifespan for project managers on major infrastructure builds, too... But hey they can always go back to the drawing board and write up a new business case, that's how we deliver things on time in this country right?

On a less sarcastic note, have there been any hints yet about where the AFC Women will play next season? North Harbour maybe?

(In keeping with the BK theme I guess we could christen them the Burger Queenz - lame joke that may be, but it's honestly no worse than Black Dames which is the logical extension of Foley's preferred branding.)

https://www.stuff.co.nz/nz-news/360592101/radical-shake-aucklands-stadiums-would-see-blues-warriors-share-mt-smart

Absurd article.

The main stadium would be used for large concerts, All Blacks tests, Super Rugby and Warriors playoff games, Black Caps ODI/T20 games and high-profile international football fixtures.

The medium stadium would host regular season Warriors and Blues games, high-profile Auckland FC games, cultural festivals, concerts and regular NZ football internationals.

The boutique stadium is for smaller international concerts, regular A-League matches, Black Ferns tests, NPC games, Super Rugby Aupiki and NRLW games, plus Black Caps tests and domestic cricket.

Three stadiums and cricket and football codes share two of them?? Give me a break.

Guna see a lot of games in Christchurch and elsewhere!

So the 20k stadium wouldn’t be owned by Auckland FC, the rugby and cricket want to muscle in?

They need at a minimum a boutique rectangle and a cricket oval either Colin Maiden or Victoria Park or EP number 2 or somewhere…

And I can’t see why Auckland FC would want the rugby churning up its swamp turf at Springs just as the finals series comes around.

If this article is remotely correct around the crowd capacity  of the Western Springs stadium for A league games then it’s a WTF.  8-10k with high profile A league games going to Mt Smart?

Well the lowest crowd this season has been 13k!!

I can’t believe Ali Williams will be looking at a stadium which sits max 10k.

15k, I would understand.

Well if this article is correct then the Quay Park proposal is dead in the water since it can't host cricket.

When is this country going to realise that trying to have cricket and Rugby/Football/League all in the one stadium seriously compromises the experience for all sports.

Also I don't think AFC would be so keen on their boutique stadium if it has to be circular to accommodate cricket tests

Especially when cricket doesnt draw the fans as it used to, especially when the internationals we get in NZ are Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. With the occasional visit from England and Aus.

I'm curious also where exactly this Western Springs stadium would go. Surely over the old stadium would be a bit of a waste of the natural amphitheatre?

Gosh it may not look that sexy but I would really hope they could keep the steep bank natural side.

A nice big 8k stand opposite and a stand similar to the port end, on the far side, would bring an awesome atmosphere

Be interesting to know the rationale of limiting capacity to 12,500 and not say about 18,000

They would have had a few crowds at Mt Smart this season above 12,500. And a new shiny ground closer to central Auckland should see even bigger crowds.

Will they continue to play some bigger games at Mt Smart?  Or if the new big Waterfront stadium happens play the bigger games (like the derbies) there in "club mode"?

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/360620834/revealed-first-images-new-auckland-stadium-complex-steven-adams-joins-all-star-backers

The first video images and new details of a major new stadium and sports complex proposed for central Auckland have been released.

And it has been revealed that NBA basketball superstar Steven Adams is joining forces with All Blacks legend Ali Williams to front the proposal.

It is also backed by entrepreneur Anna Mowbray and American billionaires Bill Foley and Bennett Rosenthal.

Rosenthal owns US Major League Soccer outfit LAFC and, like Adams, Mowbray and Williams, has a stake in Auckland FC, which is majority owned by Foley.

The flyover video shows a
12,500 seat stadium at Western Springs, beside a big indoor facility that, it’s understood, would contain several restaurants. The video shows outdoor and covered basketball courts and a number of courts for padel - a racket sport of Mexican origin.

Given the time frame to design these kinda things, that number was probably set before the season started. Would think in any future updates, they would increase the capacity.

I've lost track - but under the current thinking you'd have a 12,500 seat in Western Springs, a 25,000 in Mt Smart, and either Eden Park or the waterfront which much higher capacity. Sell North Harbour.

I assume AFC would also train at this new complex?

One gripe with the render... is that the seats have some awkward gap to the pitch. Especially behind the goal. No no no!!!

Honestly, I think that's a phenominal outcome for Auckland sport - especially if the Western Springs ends up being privately funded. The council should be biting their hand off for that.

Pickeball by another name no?

Pickleball has taken off here in Aussie. Most tennis clubs here now looking at converting some courts to pickleball.

And it's huge Stateside, with a pro circuit.

https://trilogyfunds.com.au/blog/news-media/australias-fastest-growing-sport-pickleball/

They're actually two fairly different sports. Padel has a bigger court, different rackets and balls, and the court is walled off.

As far as I'm aware, Pickleball got really big in the tech bro scene. I didn't think anyone actually played Padel until I saw a few F1 drivers playing during the latest season of dritve to survive.

Not a fan of a 3 sided stadium - but I suppose that would make it easy to increase the capacity if they were to build a stand on that side.

But yeah, 3 sided stadiums tend to let the noise and atmosphere out pretty quickly

Very curious how this all works out.

The council own the land, Ali and his gang is going to build a stadium and complex. Looks like Bill is also going to get some new bars and restaurants.

Is this just a serious land grab or is the land just leased to him?
