Not as far as I know.

The club football gate share tickets were discounted.

Were they? I read about them and I thought they were full price to the punter, but 20% went to the club.

Hey so a lot people have mentioned the need to get the Nix into the social media marketing thing, I agree and reckon we oughta get into the iphone/android app business. There is an app which exists for the A-league in which you can select your team and I think its tied to the FFA but I think the phoenix should get one based on bums on seats and out sponsors.
Such and app could contain for easy reference:
-The ladder (check out how well we are doing)
-Schedule (to see who we beat next)
-Phoenix news
-information about promotions
-reminders about game day
-linked to Ticketec so you can get your tickets on a whim
-linked to TAB for betting purposes
-linked to and advertising space for our sponsors
-linked to the Phoenix bookface and twitter feeds
-use of app for promotions/special E-voucher discounts ect
-information about special club/member events
-highlights

What I would also like to see is for the players to use social media more to interact with fans, official player Facebooks? Seperate from their normal facebooks, probably at least half managed by marketing but as long as it looks like Dura's congratulated the crowd or made a celebratory post after a win who cares. Perhaps Video chat with Paul Ifill (or someone) as the owners did when they took over? More interaction with the fans can only be good.

You pretty much just described the already available A-League app.

Sure you want it to do a few things more but it wouldn't be cost-effective when currently the Club can just push news to the FFA to disseminate.

They do do videos. They are on the FFA site and linked to from FB and twitter. Siggy used to tweet but it got too much to handle for him. Others have accounts but don't actively use them.

I am lead to believe that most of this marketing for the Nix is a one-man show. I have huge admiration for him for his work irrespective of whether this is true or not. But if it is true he deserves more staffing support as soon as we can afford/justify it IMHO.

I posted about this but no one commented on my post. I wondered why, if there was a gate share, the tickets needed to be discounted at all.

A friend bought discounted tickets (unsure if he would have gone at full price so win in that case). I checked it out online with a mock booking and tickets were discounted. $15 I think? Plus Ticketek booking fee of Evil.

I was shocked.

People are unlikely to download an A league app though, and more likely to download a wellington phoenix one. I actually doubt the nix would be allowed to do one, as the FFA would want them to encourage the A league app.

Increased social media is a key, but it has to be done right, it has to be interesting and worth people reading.

Why wouldn't someone download an A-League app? I'd say most people with smartphones active in SM already have it. It's pushed by the Club. And once you choose your Club all the branding is tailored to your Club so it looks like a "Nix" app anyway.

It's a free ad-supported app. It wouldn't be cheap to develop and maintain an independent one.

Disagree mate.

The "Ultimate A-League" app from the Android store is excellent. It's free. It's easy to download and easy to use. It's got live updates, news, player profiles and details, squad announcements, live standings, match schedule, and stuff about the clubs.

When I got my new Android phone it was one of the first apps I downloaded. At the backbencher after the game I saw 4 people with the app open on their phones checking out the table and the news feeds.

There's more about it at www.ultimatealeague.com

Bear in mind that the "Ultimate A-League" app is different entirely to the "Official A-League" app which is made by the HAL.

Ahhh, right. Fair point.

But the discussion was about fans, whoever they are, who were enthused enough to download an app, and whether those fans needed to have a Phoenix specific app available (with all the things that were listed) or whether the existing A league app (actually, apps, given that there's at least wo available) would be sufficient...

I thought it was about growing a bigger crowd and getting information to people who may not come every week. YF and a few others would download the A league app I'd imagine, but most other fans would probably need a phoenix specific one before they downloaded it.

I probably should have said that, rather than simply saying "people" wouldnt download it.

  1. The stadium caterers should be f**king sacked. It's bad enough normally but today between Aisles 13 and 12 was a total abortion. Guess what they ran out of within minutes of the half time break starting? Chips! Were they the only people in Wellington who didn't know 13,000 fans were turning up?

This. This. This.

People near me took their kids out at the 30 minute mark, anticipating that half time would be a zoo. They came back and commented that they ONLY JUST managed to get a pie, as they were almost sold out.

And it surely can't be that the caterers only have the staff/capacity to handle a crowd of 4,000 - 7,000, because they seem to be able to have more staff etc. for All Blacks test matches etc.So they clearly CAN ramp it up.

And it's not like the club were now shouting out the message in the media in the week leading up to the game that it was going to be 10,000 plus...

A very very poor effort by the stadium.

They actually run out when we only have 6000 too. Its bloody pathetic.

Also, how hard is it to go "halftime is approaching, lets cook a sh*tload of chips and line them up in the warmer". They're idiots.

I don't think it's as big as you mae this though.

If the Hurricanes tell their fans to download the Super 15 app, I don't believe that the numbers would differ *that* significantly from if they said to download a Hurricanes app.

Yes there might be a small difference but those people that would only download a Hurricanes app probably wouldn't actually use it anyway to be quite honest.

I agree that fantaics like YF fans are more likely to download this sort of app.

However...

If you go to the Android market and you do a search for "Wellington Phoenix" it returns two apps, one of which is the ultimate A-league app, which 4 and a half stars out of 5, and it's description reads:

The perfect FREE scores, stats and fantasy football companion app for any A-League fan is Ultimate A-League.... and then lists all of it's myriad features...

It turns out that the app also allows you to set up that YOUR club is "Wellington Phoenix" (or any other club in the league) which then customises various presentation view features.

Why wouldn't a new/casual/average fan download that?

I reckon it's a slam dunk, myself.

Would prefer a lapdance but might have difficulty explain that to the whanau.

Good call. I'm not really meaning to make it seem big. I don't think it'd be worth making a new app just to pander for the very few who wouldnt download the A league one.

but the fact is that for whatever reason, LOTS of people do want to buy food at thr stadium.

Given that that is a fact, for better or for worse, what we are discussing is that the caterers are just useless at meeting the demand.

The Club and A-League pushed the app when it was launched, but really they haven't mentioned it since. I shall try to pass that feedback on really because it's an ok app, has the ladder, and more importantly has all the news feeds that are pulled from the FFA website. It does the job while not being a 5-star looking app. "Functional".

And I'm heartened by the ability for people to discuss important crowd issues maturely here because if we want Gareth to read this thread and genuine ideas it's important that we (myself included) try to focus on the topic. I've already heard of people unsubscribing from the thread because it got way too difficult to follow due to sheer volume of replies (and fair enough!).

Fair call. The Club pre-warned the public to be early to the game due to unprecedented pre-sales so surely (I can't confirm of course) the Stadium management would have had this information also.

Edit: Westpac is not alone in such issues though - Dunedin's Forsyth Barr Stadium (home of the best Pies in the League) had a sell-out Elton John concert and people queued for an hour (allegedly) for a wine.

Really?!
