does anyone here think the beer is over priced...

*waits til someone says yes*

well why do you need to buy beer at the game. cant you wait 90 minutes....

In all seriousness, if someone complains about the food being rubbish, what is the point of saying 'dont eat it then'. not the most constructive thing in the world.

Gareth Morgan about to be on Close Up on TV One.

Publicity which money simply cannot buy.

Of course we could just stick to "traditional marketing".

Good "fluff" Interview with Gareth. Best ad most telling question he asked was how to double the size of the Fever?
Hardcore crowd of 8k would be immense, + "casuals"

There isn't enough alcohol in Wellington to sustain 8k of Yellow Fever.

Hi We were at the game yesterday and we just want to pass on that having the bouncy castle set up was an awesome idea! It allowed me (Mum) to take the preschoolers for a bounce while allowing Dad to watch the football in some peace. I don't know if you can pass this onto those in charge but having a bouncy castle set up would definitely make us bring back the whole family once again. Cheers and go the Phoenix Fiona

Not sure what they were doing with the caterers and the chips, but I did not the place near the entrance was closed, and it's normally open.

But the people selling donuts are fully onto it. A few games back they were barely keeping up with demand (was a cold day I think).

This game when I got there, they had a mountain of fresh made donuts, and a full box with bags of donuts sitting to sell to keep the line moving. And the line was always moving.

They also have people walking around the concourse with warmer bags selling donuts.

So if the people selling bags of donuts can be that organised, surely the rest of them can too.

The Wellingtonian Thursday 2nd February 2012 letter to the editor wrote:

Problems at the stadium

Top marks to The Wellingtonian for highlighting the issues about food and beverage service at Westpac Stadium.  Gareth Morgan is spot on.

My husband and I have been season pass-holders for the Phoenix since 2008 and in that time the quality of the food at the Westpac has gone from bad to worse.
We enjoy our football but won't be buying a season pass again.  The appalling food is one of reasons.

Another is the number of discounts given on ticket prices during the season, which means you lose out paying up front for a season pass.

The game at Eden Park was a great experience and I'm sure that the fans were more than happy with the food and beverage service there - the food sold on the day was excellent.

However the crowd numbers were so high because some of the tickets were being sold for $15 almost half price.  Season pass-holders had already paid full price.

Caroline Allen
Highbury

I'm personally ok with discounted tickets being offered for the odd game if it means more people go to games.  I'm proud to be a season ticket holder and feel I'm contributing by paying upfront and getting a bit of a discount.

And the food, seriously is it that important that we eat at the stadium?  Eat before or after the game then you don't have to worry about the food being bad.

There are a couple of factual errors in that letter.

Season ticket holders got the Auckland game for free so who cares how cheap the tickets were?

Also, even with other cheap ticket deals throughout the season I'm not sure that the numbers add up that a season ticket would be more expensive, especially for the family pass which is wickedly good value.

Season ticket advantages:

1. Entry to ALL home games (inc the one[s] which aren't)
2. Your very own seat, or standing space
3. Deal with ticketek only ONCE (OK maybe two or three times if they muck up your tickets at the start)
4. A shiny black Adidas voucher
5. Preferential bookings for the play-offs and the grand final.
6. Nix emails (sometimes exhorting you to wear outrages clothes - VERY NICE!)
7. Spam mail from FFA and the A-League

But the best is:

8. A huge sense of entitlement and smugness .

You guys are looking at it wrong.

You/we will always be season ticket holders in any given situation but a lot who don't have emotional investment in the Nix see it purely from a bang for buck financial decision.

If the entertainment isn't worth the cost of entry (in their perception) they won't buy/renew season passes.

And since they look at it very much from a financial point of view, the discounted tickets in Auckland, half price ticket deals, discounted local club share tickets, and abundance of freebies all degrade the perceived value for money for these members.

I'm just pointing out how many will rationalise the decision.

Yes, you make some pertinent points Ahmad, and in a very thoughtful and balanced manner.

That said, and with all due respect, I still think that someone needs to compose a response to the Wellingtonian pointing out that the silly cow doesn't know what she's talking about.

I bet she sings Stand Up For The Phoenix out of tune as well.

if welnix' current approach of heavily marketing each game continues next season, which i hope it does, then im sure they wont have any problem with season member numbers declining but overall crowds increasing. The financially prudent fan can make their choice and welnix will be ok with that i reckon.

Could be wrong on this but i had the feeling under terry that he really needed/wanted the lump sum up front for season memberships at the start of the season - he's the type who seemed to focus on one payday, then move on to the next, constantly trying to tread water. Welnix are the opposite it would seem - long term gain, short term profit not so important.

Having said all that, lets not forget there was a huge transition after the season memberships were done, hardly welnix' fault, they had nothing to do with season pass price points. Angry letter lady mustn't have thought about that i guess... Wouldn't be surprised if the season passes next year are discounted further than ever before...

And the food, well ... lets just say i was in a hospital recently and their food was practically gourmet in comparisonpaulm2012-02-04 21:11:06

I believe Tony P explained on here that the money from season tickets was held in a trust and gradually released after each game.

Yeah I agree with this although I wouldn't say they are looking at it from a "financial point of view" but more an issue of fairness. People don't like getting "ripped off". So when they are paying about $20 per ticket for every game, and for a single game others can get tickets for $15 they feel aggrieved. Realistically though it was only a $5 difference. Not the end of the world. It's basic psychology though and the owners should try to avoid this.

I don't think the pricing is quite as elastic as many are making out. If anything special cheap tickets probably gets more attention. But if you are looking at how much people spend on crap food and overpriced drinks, I don't think a few dollars in the ticket price is really going to change that much.

Oh my gosh, and apparently for years they've even been giving tickets free tickets in promotions, which is rather unfair after people have bought their season tickets.

As a season pass holder, it really doesn't bother me at all.  The first game I went to (as a long time rugby fan was a 4-1 win over Perth back in year dot) was on a discounted ticket.  To me, the issue is building the base of season ticket holders - as these people tend to drag others along.  Last year, I was just a single season pass-holder, this year I had a family pass, and will renew again next year and one of the people who I took to the Sydney game - has been to every game since - and will be buying a season pass next year.  I've family in Christchurch and Dunedin who I encouraged to go the nix games when they played there and who are truly jealous of all the games we get in Wellington and will now occasionally plan trips to Welly to coincide with home games - and they will definitely go to any games taken back to the South Island.

Another point, the average punter has  to get used to the longer season, 13 home games is twice the number for rugby Super 15, or NPC.  It wouldn't bother me if 2-3 games were played in other centres each year, that would leave 10-11, and that is still more games in Wgtn than in the first 2 seasons of the Nix existence. I'm in agreement with the strategy mentioned by Gareth Morgan of increasing the national profile.    To those  who want all the games at home or at most one away, just look at how the Hurricanes have managed to alienate their regional fan-base outside of Wellington, and it wasn't all because of Mark Hammett, it was their less than generous approach to allocating games  to New Plymouth, Napier, and Palmy.
