Crowds - The thread of Australian whining

What the hell is going on with our crowds?  Dismal showing last night.  Luckily it sounded like there were more people there that actually were.  I think the Nix need to stop saying biggest crowd of the season expected etc for next season because every media release has been off the mark.

The Friday night game thing wasn't helpful for us country/regional folk. Especially working ones. If it were on a weekend then maybe there would be some reach outside of Wellington.

But I would have had to leave at around 2-3pm at the latest to get to the game, not counting park finding, etc.

Ticket prices were pretty good, but petrol huge burdon. Plus I just couldn't get the time off work. If it were Saturday, Sunday...would have helped a lot.

But what that could show is the core regional Phoenix supporters block - 10k. imho anyway.

All to do with the 8pm kickoff and the fact nobody knew it was on. It was the same last year with promotion too.

Brisbane omly got 15k on a saturday,so we dont look that bad.

 

Is there anyway to find out what the ratings were across sky sports channels last night?

The HAL have said that ratings and attendances have been better than the previous season so the October start  has worked, but maybe it needs to finish before NRL, Super Rugby starts up.   Which would mean more mid-week games so that doesn't really work either.  Not sure what the solution is,  except for teams playing each other twice instead of three times. Which I'm sure is not an option.

I think the theory is, people will turn up to the finals series anyway (attendance will be down, but not by so much). But what really lost out in the past was the opening rounds of the A league, when it clashed with the finals of other codes. Tegal2012-03-31 23:29:39

Yeah I agree better to have A-league finals at beginning of the other codes seasons. 

Is it also possible that people expected that we would get another home elimination play off that the decided to by-pass Friday?

Hurricanes got more than 11k to their game last night, must have been the cheap tickets.

Gareth just on the radio, wasn't disappointed with the crowd, loved the noise made etc.

i was under the belief rugby count season members as in the crowd number even if they don't turn up.

I would think that we do the same don't we?

Saying that I don't think the hurricanes membership would have been high this season

A lot of the corporate box's are held by companies and mainly open for Rugby games for their clients.

I was at the match, and I'd say ~11K would be accurate.

I know it soudns like excuses  but possible reasons for lower than expected attendance

I really expected the Dompost to have a full page ad. Things like the quick turn around must have some sort of effect. Of course, the time is a biggie. I would have had brought one or two kids with me if it'd been around the same time as the Hurricanes game.

In your world, Sunshine. But then I suppose corporate lounge food would be good and you'd be paying ...how much?

The average fan and family make a call on the total package- cost of getting there, cost of parking cost of food, ticket price and cost of getting home  plus performance of the team
THEN the question gets asked...
Should we go through all of that, at that expense or stay at home and watch it on tv or internet? The team performance is key, but so is the rest of it which the team have no control over.

This is one of the most bullsh*t posts I have ever read on these forums. Times are never going to suit everyone. Justbecause the timing of games doesn't suit you doesn't mean that there are others that feel alienated, many find ways to move works hours etc to allow them to attend games.

I agree with the comments about poor promotion. It seemed some regular season games had more of a drive to fill seats than this one. I came down from Auckland and reached Wellington around 4pm and you'd have never known there was a game on. In fact I saw a banner up promoting the previous week's game. I don't know what the media coverage in Wellington was like in the week leading up, but I suspect more should have been done, either by the league or the club, to boost the profile of the game. 10k is poor no matter how you look at it - I was expecting at least 20k. I know everyone who didn't go have their reasons for not attending, but if I can demand Friday off work and drive for 8+ hours to go, and others can board flights from around the country, more people should have been there.

I also agree with the comments about Sunday games. Although I like the idea of having a big night out after the game, more people can make the afternoon games. But scheduling was out of our control.

I don't buy the stadium food argument. Sure beers are dear but I've usually had a few prematch and only want a couple to soothe my throat during the match. And if I'm hungry I'm sure I can wait until the end of the game.

Anyway, those of us who did go on Friday got to enjoy a cracking game of football and have a great party at the stadium. Nights like Friday are why we support the Phoenix, through wins and through losses. Like I've said in the past, one of the best assets this team has, and one of the best promotional tools for home games, is the Yellow Fever. Bring along your friends, take them to the Fever Zone and, if they're anything like my mates, they'll want to know when the next home game is.

Message for all codes wishing to use the Stadium, Keep the prices down for tickets, car parks & Food/beverages.

1] Rugby prices although still cheaper than A League prices are still too high for what you get. $38 for our football game last Fri night was way too much after having just had a Sunday game to the pay on the day/night fans. Some thing to ponder on. Sorry but the half time entertainment at any event is sadly invisible. If the club think a blarringly loud stadium self promo featuring Rugby is going to get football fans entertained I'd suggest stop smoking the green stuff guys. In fact go one better, turn off the f**ken stupid music prior to the game and at half time too. I'd rather listen to the crowd noise as the number increase before actual kick-off. It helps create an atmosphere, not super loud friggen music. Own goal for the various codes and the Westpac Stadium Trust MORON's

2] FFS, charge $10 a car park at every event and fill the spaces. It is income lost for the stadium morons/trust. Empty parks mean no money and if you are dellusional in thinking everyone will catch a train, think again. Own goal for the Westpac Stadium trust MORON's

3] My old hobby horse - Stadium substances - Still way over priced. Why not do like the Aussies and let BK, Maccas, Subway into do the food at the Stadium. $9 for a coke and a small punit of chips? f**ken stupid - again the Westpac Trust Stadium MORON's score another own goal. And the price of a mini stubbie of beer? A fool and his money are easily parted. Seen a few fools at the various games.

Not sure the Stadium can be blamed 100% for the music, the FFA does have a say in the game day experience. Not just for the finals games they control, but during the season also.

What is the usual price for re-re-microwaved french fries?
