Back to the coaching...

What was Ernie Merrick's style of play like at the Victory? Surely a coach that has won the A-League before would be a great option.

The owners came out saying they want a possession based style and Merrick doesn't offer that. He played a narrow, counter attacking style based on putting a lot of pressure off the ball. Plus playing 3 at the back isn't welcome here.

You can only play possession based football if you have the players that are good enough. He played a narrow game cause it worked.
Merrick was the Victory's coach from day one, he built his team to play that way. It worked well and won him titles but it isn't what the owners have said they wanted.

definitely interesting that the candidates have said the process has been the most thorough they had experienced.

Thats definitely some of the owners playing a part I'd say

I believe the arsehole businessman term for it is "due diligence". Boring! We should have just signed Maradona as player/coach 2 days after Ricki quit

But then he would not pay his tax and shoot at reporters with pellet guns.

Maradona shooting Sam Worthington with a pellet gun! I´d pay money to see that.

I liked Burgess in the Herald on Sunday saying that some candidates were surprised that the Nix interview panel was ringing up some of their ex-players to get the good oil on what they were like.

I know you guys take the Piss when we tell you Ryan Nelsen was the coach the majority of the time in South Africa but it is true.
I have contacts with Killens parents.

Interesting - I heard the same thing from relatives of one of the AW defenders, that Ryan made all tactical decisions in the Italy game.

This comment from the Facebook page: "Heard just last night that its down to four candidates. Two Englishman, an Australian and a Dutchman. Ifill wouldn't say much more than that!"   So if that's true and the Herald aren't bullshitting then the remaining candidates are a Dutchie and an Aussie (Merrick?)

Is the "Dutchman" assumption real or just because of the Herald on Sunday piece that if they speak English then it must be a Dutchman?  Danish coaches speak decent English and have coached abroad. And hey, so do Ancelotti and Wenger... just kidding.

More seriously, does anyone remember van't Schipp and Coolen (both A League coaches) - they may have got their fair share of disappointments with Heart Bypass and with the Pissants, respectively, but we do not know enough about the stuff behind the scenes.

New coach announced this week apparently if they agree terms.

Good to hear they have discussed current players with the coaches as well. I'm happy with how they have done this process

And to think some people said we shouldn't get rid of Ricki because no-one would be interested in the job...

I think Greenie will stay for continuity. Especially if we end up with a coach from Europe. He'll need someone who knows this league and the players. Given the restrictions on foreign signings as well.

/fify. And if it's Ernie Merrick I'll be proven right. No-one in their right mind could say he'd be an advance on Rick-master H.

The league was much weaker when Merrick coached compared to now. You can't reasonably justify that Merrick will do a better job as Phoenix head coach than Ricki did based on that.

Herbert coached in the supposedly weaker league at the same time as Merrick?

Merrick > Ricki, but I don't think he would do any better as Phoenix coach in the current A-League, which is the point Doloras was making.
