Shame they turned down the locals with years of coaching their children in Cap F/ball leagues.

Short sighted

Not saying that they are to be believed but I'm seeing A LOT of Tweets on Twitter not saying that we might sign Coppell, but claiming that we HAVE signed him.

They played this very tight to their chest. I don't think anyone knows for sure who it is.

I believe a lot of red hearings have been dropped in conversations by them in the know to cover/ confuse and get the world of Nix spinning a little faster!

A gaggle of Europeans.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure that both rumours are true: it's Coppel with Merrick as his assistant.

Gareth will hand Domey one of these as he walks into the room.

Clearly not approved by Gareth then.

Bit out of left field but has anyone heard of this fella? Bruno Metsu. The AEK Academy in Aus chucked his name out there on twitter, I've never heard of him but it's a bit weird for someone to drop a random name like that with absolutely no substance behind it. Fits the criteria, European, coached Senegal at 2002 World Cup, coached in Europe. Looks very European. An opinions?

Ray Gatt cost me $140 in airfare change fees when he reckoned that the Liverpool v Victory match was going to be on July 25. Turned out to be the 24th, rendering my flights for the next day just a wee bit useless. Needless to say I won't be making stupid decisions on the back of Ray Gatt rumours any time soon (although at least he provided a handy scapegoat).

Looking at his feed, I think he got Coppell from the @osaussies account.

I my frazzled memory serves me well, Metsu came second on the short list that Lowy drew up for the Socceroos coaching job when Hiddink stepped down after the 2006 WC. He was seriously considered but FFA went for the Dutch continuity then. I would say he is above the level we need. Metsu is in high demand in Middle East, speaks Arabic and might have even adopted Islam (but I am not 100% sure there), the main thing is that he is no more likely to come here than Ricki is to coach Bahrain.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

I look forward to reading all the angst when i get back from work today.Makes me laugh at how some of you moan, not sure how you can make negative comments on any of those suggested when they havnt even had a chance to play a game.Yep 4/5 games into a season go for it,but really before they have even been given a chance.

Gotta be. Much as I'd like to think we could attract Steve Coppell down here, it still seems unlikely to me.

Will be the biggest joke in the league if its Merrick. Couldve saved months of searching;  its not like we didn't know what hes about before this process

That itself isn't the problem, you wouldn't know what else was available unless you look. The problem is it's Merrick. I wanted someone who would develop the young players into something more and bring new ideas. It may be unfair but I don't believe Merrick will do any better than Ricki nor move the club forward. Seems like a low risk approach that will yield mediocrity to me.

Interestign given the weeks of intrigue about who the new manager could be. The dozens of applicants with ex-international players and former EPl players names bandies about to get to Ernie merrick....could have just headhunted him in the first place and saved all the weeks of intrigue

So does this mean after our worldwide search to find a coach and appointing someone in our own backyard, we are getting Ange next year?

Merrick has championship winning pedigree. New club, new challenge, who knows what he can achieve?

I think the biggest problem with Merrick is that he is a known quantity to us, so it doesn't seem like that exciting an appointment off the back of a "world-wide search".

I also refuse to buy into this crap about coaches only knowing how to play one way. They may get stuck in a rut sometimes, but any top coach should know how to adapt a playing style to a group of players, and vice versa.

One thing's for sure - this has been a pretty exhaustive search by the club conducted with a high degree of professionalism. If Merrick has made it through that process and the club still think he's their man, then I'm right behind him.

If it's him of course!
