Olyroos games - 5th of Feb
                           22nd of Feb
                           14th of March
They'll play away on the 5th and the 14th I think.

Heart and Ccm will both lose 3 starting team players to Olyroos, Roar will lose squad players. I think.

OK, purely speculative, and amped on current form, does anyone else actually think we may even be able steal a cheeky second place in the table come the end of the season?

Admittedly that means better away performances, but we've shown twice now that we actually know how to deliver goods on Aussie soil. And i'm talking 3 points, not just one.

Quietly hopeful, of lots of finals football for the Nix!

Piney reckons you need probably around 40 points for a fourth spot and home semi.....this should be our minimum aim considering where we are placed now and and how well we play at home.
We need those home semi's

So thats 13 points needed. IMO we should be looking at 10 points from the 4 home games. Heart, Roar, GC and Mariners. Could/should beat GC and Heart at home. The last game of the season agaisnt Mariners could be interesting. They are already more than ten points clear on top.....if they are clear by 4 coming into that last game they might/could rest key players for the finals series.

That leaves 3 points away.....3 draws or a win against the likes of Adelaide would do it.

We have a tough run but we are one of the form teams at the moment. Plus we have a team of very experianced pros who should know how to do the business. Some of the other younger teams might buckle under the end of season pressure

We could get second, and we should dare to dream.

We might not get second... we MUST get 4th at worst, and I am going to be disappointed if we are not 3rd. 2nd would just about make me explode with joy.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Phoenix fans. We have to win them over one fan at a time.

Whether we second or not is firmly in the hands of the Phoenix now. Unlike the usual story of needing results to go our way for such and such an event to happen, the event of getting 2nd is now completely in our control (for now).

Why not? I believe.

If results keep favoring us the way they have been and we pick up a couple of cheeky wins on the road and continue our strong home form we could definitely steal second. Our games against the heart and roar will be key if want to slip in there.

Perhaps those ahead of us are only there because they still have to play us.
Fixtures involving top four
Hearts - Phoenix x 2, CCM, Bris
Bris - Phoenix, CCM, Hearts
CCM - Phoenix x 2, Bris, Hearts
Plenty of points to be dropped there and teams like Perth, Adelaide, Victory and Sydney capable of doing damage.

Our results against top four to date this year
P 4      W 1       D 1       L2

 semi home and away  30/3 - 1 Apr then 6 - 8 Apr (Easter). Also 1 v 2 same dates

Ccm will lose their players for the game that we play in Gosford. Will mean that Pasfield will be in goal, and he is far inferior to Ryan. They could start leaking goals against us

Definitely want Gold Coast to beat Sydney. Would be much better for us if Sydney get no points from the game - and GC would still be 10 points behind us.

Bit of a gap opening up now, and with the way MV apparently played tonight it sounds unlikely that their game in hand will count for much, so that could possibly be how the top 6 looks at the end of the season?

One positive is that the NSW and Melbourne away games are back to back. Lads can stay over for the week and make the 6 point away trips a regular occurrence mykey2012-01-22 23:38:26

I can see the Nix with an away base in Aussie soon.Perfect to base the squad for the 6 point away stints, house the future Youth team in the A-League Youth competition
and a future W-League team too

I personally would have preferred the Victory to win. Giving 3 points to Perth only gives them a chance to catch us. Don't like the Victory but don't like the thought of being caught in the league table even more. Perth and Melbourne on 22 is better than Perth on 25 Jeff Vader2012-01-23 12:00:19

Are you serious..... the Victory getting spanked 4-1 is brilliant regardless of what it has done to the table. The exception of course would be if we were pushed out of a playoff spot!

Yes I am.

We now have 2 teams that can catch us in 3rd spot so IF we lose then we could conceivably drop to 5th as opposed to 4th had Perth lost last night.

What would you prefer, 4th or 5th?

I know what you mean, but the answer for us is to keep winning. Perth will stumble, they are simply not very good, but I still do love the Victory getting stuffed!

Its ironic cause more than a few people here think Ricki should be sacked, half our team should be dropped, we play the wrong tactics and rubbish football yet we are still 3rd after 2/3rds of the season.
We have the toughest run home and I expect we will stumble. Our wins over GCU and Planes were 6 points, but they were bloody ugly. Ugly winning sides don't keep winning for very long.

Point is we generally play much "prettier" at home, if we have to win ugly away I will take it.

Arsenal last won the double playing ugly football... back in the dark ages when Leeds were any good they always won playing ugly football.

I suppose the point is there have been times we have played lovely football and lost.

The reverse of your theory is also true, in that good teams sometimes have to play ugly to win

Yeah that all makes sense to me. Season 1 we played some lovely football and got pasted at times.

personally I think all the "sackl Ricki" agents need to rethink their position, sure he's made some odd calls but two away wins, 3rd on the table says someone is doing something right. If the criticisms land at Ricki's feet when we struggle then credit has to go his way too,.

Hearts form for the last 5 matches is staggering. I thought they have looked pretty good, maybe they tend to fade at the end of games, but really surprised they are the worst.
