When does it stop being the start though?

Never Buffy!!

I believe last season I might have started referring to the 'worst season ever' rather than 'worst start to the season ever' at about Round 20 but the bottom line is this sub-thread-within-a-thread was started by me and is my intellectual property and I will do whatever I want with it and Dave Burgess can just ggf and no I'm not telling you who I am.

Maybe thats why Moss keeps hoofing the ball up to row Z height, so those in the corporate boxes get a better view.

And you started it after I said it was a similar start to a season about 3 years ago (which you were proven right

Still the worst start to the season ever, and the first time ever the Nix have been winless after seven games.

Oh well, at least we know Gareth is enjoying this new attacking style and it's bringing the fans flooding back to Westpac.

Also, this is the worst goal-scoring start to the season we've ever had - 6 goals from 7 games. Previous worst was 7 goals from 7 games.

12/13 - WDDLLLWD - 9pts - WLLDWLLLLDWLLDLWLWL - 27 pts (27 games)

13/14 - LDDLDLDL - 4pts

This is by far our worst start to the season ever. We could easily go the first ten games without a win here.

You can crack on all you like about how it's a transition year and Ernie can only do so much with the players he inherited blah blah blah but even Rick Herbert managed to coax a win or two out of this rabble.

Jesus wept, just win a fucking game already.

Cumulative points at Week 8 compared to previous seasons...

Permalink Permalink
over 12 years ago · edited over 12 years ago · History

Here's a cold, hard dose of reality...

In the previous three 27-game seasons it has required at least 32 points and an average of 34 points to make the play-offs (and in 11/12 it was actually 37 points).

So from where we are now we need another 30 points (from 19 games) in order have the average number of points required to make the play-offs in previous seasons.

Now the bad news. In the last 4 seasons (i.e. the only 4 seasons in the history of the A-League which have been at least 27 games) between Round 9 and Round 27 the most points we have ever collected is 32 (in 09/10). Add that to the number of points we have already (4) and we might just squeeze into the play-offs with 36 points. The average amount of points we have collected between Round 9 and Round 27 is 26. Add that to the points we already have and we'll have 30 points and won't make the play-offs.

What this means is that despite having had our worst start to a season ever for the rest of the season we will have to play at least as well as we ever have (if not better) just to make the play-offs. Can anybody see where that transformation is going to come from?

Another interesting thing about this graph is that at this time last season we were actually going OK, at least compared to previous Nix seasons. And by week 9 last season was actually our best ever start - 3 wins, 3 draws and 3 losses, 12 pts from the first 9 games.

The season really fell apart with a 4 game losing streak between Rounds 14 and 17, which we never recovered from.

Jeez, we were absolutely flying in 11/12 too. Just a couple of 2-game losing streaks in the last 10 games stopped us finishing much higher.

You want someone to twist the stats to say that everything is ticking along fine and there is nothing to worry about? 0 wins out of 8 games makes that pretty damn hard.

After 9 games...

07/08 - DLLWDWLLL - 8pts - LWLDDLWDWLLL - 20pts (21 games)

08/09 - DLLDLWDWL - 9pts - LWWWLDWLWLDL - 26pts (21 games)

09/10 - LWDLDDDDD - 9pts - DWLWDWLDLDWWWLLWWW - 40 pts (27 games)

10/11 - DWLLWDLWL - 11pts - DLLWLLWDLWLWDWLWLWWLW - 41 pts (30 games)

11/12 - DWLLLDDWL - 9pts - WWLWLWLWWWWLLWWDLL - 40 pts (27 games)

12/13 - WDDLLLWDW - 12pts - LLDWLLLLDWLLDLWLWL - 27 pts (27 games)

13/14 - LDDLDLDLL - 4pts

So we are now 9 pts outside the play-offs.

Not only that, we need another 30 pts from 18 games to reach a target of 34 pts (which is the average pts required to make the play-offs in a 27 game season). The most pts we have ever got from the last 18 games is 31, the average is 25.

Average pts per game so far this season = 0.44

Average pts per game required from now on = 1.67

So realistically looking at that, its not really likely.

I reckon the last one is likely. All we need to do is score more goals than the opposition in 6 of our games and score the same amount in 12 of them. How hard can it be?

Three for me, and two for them.

we only have to win about half of our remaining games. and some of them are going to be against the Heart and Sydney FC

I've bolded the games I think are winnable, and italicced the ones I think are drawable. If all goes to plan, we could end up with 12 wins and 3 draws.

31 points being from the golden 2009/10 season.

Very sobering to think that at the same stage last season we had 12 pts.

And if we don't beat Sydney at the weekend we will be at least 6pts off our next worse start to the season (11pts after 11 games, 07/08).
