Explain how a 'keeper fits into "possession-based attacking football".

Michael Theo is good at it. It helps the team maintain possession. Lots of modern 'keepers, Casillis, Valdes, Neuer, De Gea are excellent with the ball at their feet.

Also a couple of those players were contributing to a toxic team environment at the time.

Which in my opinion is the only reason you would consider releasing a player in the A league. We kind of did that with g*o

Individual people do not represent the opinion of everyone on these forums. People are allowed to have differing opinions, there's nothing 'funny' about that. One of my pet hates of this place is one person posting something, another person agreeing with them, and then all of a sudden some people assume that because two people agree, everyone on the forum agrees.

Agreed. I hate that.

Ok. Fair point.

Since you protested, I assume you would keep all of them then?

Not all. I wouldn't have a massive clear out either. I'm right in between.

If we could've got great ball players in the past I'm sure we would have been happy to have them. Sometimes the choice isn't as easy as everyone seems to think.

Fifteen Kiwi Feverettes marrying 15 ballplaying Brazilians would be a possible solution.

Sanchez and Bertos, Lochhead to stay Paston to stay, but to be backup for Moss (if another backup keeper can be found for cheap then let Paston go). Smith, Downey, Pantelis to go. Hogg I'm unsure on, depends how he goes for the rest of the season.

So we are much the same except Sanchez... guess we are in 'agreement' then...

I am constantly amazed how often people want to dump some one when there is no clear successor in place that has proven themselves at the appropriate level.

Agree. People want Lochhead out but never name a replacement (or a right footed player there). This is why the Hogg experiment will be interesting because if he cuts the mustard then Lochhead will be looking at a reduction in wages since he is out of contract in a few months. He should be very nervous...

Well it's come to a stage where even Leo is a better option

manny was decent there as well. not good for crossing, but the style we are leading to doesnt really require the fullbacks to have to be the best crossers of the ball

If we cut smith and sanchez (and totori), thats two(or three) import spots, sign a wide player with some flair, and a CM that can distibute thee ball.

How long has Totori been living in NZ? If he becomes a resident (like Daniel), worth resigning as a local impact player IMO

If you're really going to look at freeing up cap space and having an overhaul - I'd be looking at Manny/Leo at RB.  If Manny isn't happy playing there I'd actually look to release him.  He's had a shocker this season when asked to do something different to the basic role he's had previously and he's definitely on good money plus there would definitely be someone willing to take him on in Aus.

Paston - may retire but might also take reduced wages as he spends more time in his new profession. Hard to drop him if he is still the starting national team GK though.

Lochead - offer contract on reduced wages if Hogg looks the goods and is kept. Otherwise look to replace.

Bertos - keep, playing his best football for a while.

Sanchez - keep.

Smith - replace with a better import player.

Totori - also tend to think our imports should be starters, unless he does that - let go. Pity we couldn't get dispensation for having an Oceania import.

That's a good point. If the owners really want to talk tough they could say to Manny "you will play RB" and then release Bertos.

I think the other option to free some money is to talk tough with Stein and say to him now unless you show some dramatic improvement in the remaining games come next year you have two choices. 1: We cancel your contract with no payout by mutual consent and you can go back to Europe and find a team or 2: you will spend next year playing the odd mid week game for the Nix B side with no possibility of playing a first team game.

sorry what? he seems to me to be one of the few players that pose a genuine threat, and at least puts in the effort to work at his game. I'd be saddened to see him cast out before the likes of Totori or Smith even.

I wonder whether Manny will have ended up shooting himself in the foot by insisting on the switch to DM. After realising that Leo is actually a decent RB and with Manny having proven himself less than spectacular so far, Ricki and co. could end up deciding he is surplus to requirements. Might not happen but definite possibility imo.

Hold up. Stein? Best player in our last game, is that not improvement?. Probably our best player on the ball barring Ifill. Best touch and control too. I wouldn't be axing him.

I can't see how that could work. He's contracted for 2 years, he holds the cards at the moment. I also consider him too good to let go, we should be doing more to play to his strengths rather than casting him aside. You don't become a Belgian international just by walking down the street in Bruges.

Manny at LB? would be an improvement but unsure if his passing is good enough for either role in a 'Total Football' side.

Fuck this stupid game

Was covered in another thread. Spent about 5 years (probably slightly more) in NZ but hasn't been 5 continuous years between stints in the US and the Solomons.
