Guess that raises the chances of Sanchez re-signing - and playing centrally next year

This announcement has sort of opened my eyes to the potential of many players retiring in the future

Daniel=32
SigmUnd=31
Lochhead = 30
Bertos=30
We are going to encounter more retirements in the future. Possibly Greeny & Paston before next year too

Actually that's not fair.
My guess of Pavlovic found dead in an alley was at least related to someone leaving the squad.
Everyone else thought were signing someone, so that makes me the best

Hmm, must keep Lochy out of retirement for All Whites and Nix. Paston is off contract right? I sort of expected for a while that he'll retire.
Be great timing for Moss to come back.
Brown leaving opens up options in midfield, Sanchez might actually be able to play centrally!
I look foward to the future and checking this thread in the offseason daily to find that nothing has changes for several months.

I am SO gutted. I will miss you Tim. You've been an inspiration, what a player.
You know how people say Haters gonna hate?
Well next season Haters gonna regret.
(Greenie/News/Smithy, that would be such a cool T-shirt idea. The slogan + a retro face of Brown =

I was thinking this while watching the game, players like Brown, Greenacre, Paston and Lochead all advancing in age and in Greenacres case right at the the end and what our team morale/cohesian/spirit will be like when those core players move on.
And here I find Brown goes before his time, he is not everyones cup of tea but gee I will miss him and him popping up scoring goals!

Brave decision... wonder if he has lost the enjoyment for the game a little bit?
Good luck to him and his studies. Thank you for your service to the club and NZ football through your campaigns.
.... however, I am excited by the prospect of seeing a new midfield for next season as i have not been a fan of this years version!!

well put.
I also 2nd 2nd best's motion of wee-mac.
Final thought, Browns absence and Pantellis return from injury should free Sanchez from playing wide to playing central, although the question to be asked is he tough enough?brumbys2012-03-27 09:15:35

ADELAIDE United's razor gang is preparing budget cuts but a player exodus should help ease its financial burden before October's A-League season kick-off.
It's understood Cassio, Serginho van Dijk, Zenon Caravella, Jon McKain and Dario Vidosic are considering seeking a way out before their contracts come to an end.

Would love van Dijk, but they want a fee for him. If McKain would be happy playing DM, I would take him to replace Smith. Vidosic wants to go back to the Roar by the sounds of it.

I'd take Cassio over Lochhead any day of the week. van Dijk would be quality too, imagine an Ifill/van Dijk combination up front

Cassio and van Dyk.....oh yes please. Both class players. I would imaging the Victory and others would be on to those two in a flash.

We can bitch and moan about getting rid of Pav, but fact of matter he is here for next year, unless someone else wants him or he agrees to a release. It is called a contract!
As for caqlling for Pantelis to be dropeed? WTF? At least give the guy a chance to get on the pitch.
Lochhead has his limitations going forward at times, and at times he is close to our best attacking option going forward. But he does give our back four an air of solidity. He is also locked in for next year, and in the absence of something better coming out of the woodwork will continue to command a regular place.
Not at all calling for Pantelis to be dropped (note I list him under "NOT SEEN ENOUGH TO FORM AN OPINION"- some of these could potentially be dropped if they have been found to not be good enough).
As for Lochhead "giving our back four an air of solidity" we're in deep trouble if that's the case and we can't find anyone better.
Lochhead was awful against Central Coast and hasn't been good enough this season in my opinion to merit a starting place.
He's very slow and error-prone and players go around him with ease.
On attack, he doesn't measure-up as a wing-back due to his high rate of innaccurate crosses.
Finding a better Aussie (even Kiwi) replacement would be ideal so as not to take up an import slot- but worth keeping Lochhead as a reserve player since he at least has experience.
Keep our four import slots for midfielders and strikers since we badly need more quality in those areas:
So keep Ifill and Sanchez
Would be reluctant to give a precious import slot to Smith, despite fact he's quite decent, although keep him if space allows or a defensive midfielder is needed.
Warner: total waste of an import slot on an average keeper- he must go.
Have a feeling Paston will stay (35 isn't old for a keeper, he's playing well, has been injury-free for some months and he'll want to be around for the next World Cup).
For a second keeper, should look at signing Mossy or Liam Reddy (impressed when last at the Nix) or a young Kiwi keeper (either Basalaj, Marinovic or Gleeson: although Marinovic and Gleeson may feel they're better-off where they are overseas in terms of career opportunities).
And they should recruit up to the maximum allowed squad of 23 players next season, bringing in some of the best from our age-group national sides such as Ian Hogg. (Fenton, Feneridis, Musa and Thomas looked decent from the u-23's recently too.)

We will have to agree to disagree on Lochhead i think. Sure he is not brilliant, but he is bloody reliable, and would be in the four or five left backs in the A League. Left backs are not falling out of trees anywhere that I have seen, Yes if we find someone better sign them up, but dont drop him on the half chance that someone may develop into a player as good.
While I would love to have Mossy or Reddy Back, it is a difficult as both are, in reality first choice keepers in the league, so you have the added problem of players of that nature not happy playing second fiddle. It would also add stress to the salary cap. Would much rather a younger good second keeper such as those you have mentioned come in.

Fox Sports commentators seemed to think Van Dijk more likely to go to Indonesia than another A-League club. He could earn more there potentially.

Last Friday's news from Sydney. Real or not ??
"Gold Coast United might well be a footnote in history by this time next week, but the players won't be. We understand skipper Michael Thwaite and keeper Glen Moss already have deals with other clubs, Adama Traore has confirmed his departure to Melbourne Victory. James Brown has signed for Newcastle Jets, Kristian Rees might head back to his home town of Adelaide, Chris Harold and Daniel Bowles have offers from Perth Glory, Gol Gol Mebrahtu is being courted by Wellington Phoenix, and Ben Halloran, Jerrad Tyson and Mitch Cooper could be staying closer to home."
