I don't understand why he has been resigned...
I'm all for NZ youth getting contracts, but here is a player who couldn't get a game all year, despite all our injuries and suspensions at the start, fails to get game time for the u23s bar for a couple short cameos behind NZFC players.
What has he done to warrant a two year contract... trained well?
If he has so much potential as Ricki says, then why was he never given a run?

He's only 19 remember. Don't think there are many other 19 yo in the oly squad.

Actually does raise an interest issue is whether he would be better as part of the finishing school. At least he'd get chance of game time, and still have a professional set up to train. Down side is he'd need to find a job.
Maybe he only started to show enough toward the end of the season, when we were making a finals run, so understandably wasn't given a run? Who knows.
Expect him to get some gametime next season.

Nah.Keep Pastie & Moss together
TBH I'd like to see Pasty move on.
I think it would be more beneficial for the AWs if they were both regular starters. We all know that Pasty will get injured sooner or later and from then on Glen will be number 1. Better off letting Pasty go and play NZFC or for another pro team and let Basalaj etc become the 2nd keeper.

With Gleeson in the MSL not sure who our top two are for GK.
Patson might be third now in the pecking order so sign an extension for two more years, work hard and retire a penalty saving world cup hero.

this, maybe do the same thing with Greenie and move him into coaching yoof.

From what I have heard from friends in Portland who watched Timbers Reserve team games, Gleeson isn't quite above Pasty in terms of ability though. He has bounds of potential, so in a couple of years when Pasty retires, I think he will be head and shoulders above Pastys level.

The trouble is how will he develop as a footballer without regular game time? We don't have a reserve side, he won't be able to do the Academy stuff with Team Wellington. So in reality he will only get to play the midweek friendlies.
Rickie did say last year that his approach with Cam will be year one...zippo, year two bench with occasional appearances, year three possible starts. the guy will have to have mega patience to get through that. In reality the Nix have a very conservative approach to playing youngsters.....if guys don't get playing time then how will we know if they have got the goods?
I kind of thought Cam might have been worth a run at RB this year....he might have had more to offer than playing left footed Tsats there.

Mitch Cooper could be a good signing for the phoenix especially that he is currently unattached. Also signing with the nix can help to convince him switch allegiance for the AW's as he lived for 5 years in NZ.

I have no problem with Cameron getting a two year contract. From what I saw of him in practice games he is a talented footballer. He was unfortunate not to get a run this year but he was well down the queue behind Brown, Lia and Smith for a midfield spot.

Reminds me of Marco when he was here. Ricki had played him a few times and it wasn't until Ricki was left with no choice but to play him that he finally got a decent run in the side and the rest is history. Now I'm not saying Cameron Lindsay is going to take the league by storm as Marco did but surely it woulnd't hurt to give him a run. Especially in the pre-season games at least. Surely can't be far behind the likes of Brown and Lia in passing and defensive ability.

Not true.
The first season he learnt and trained, then in the 2nd season as soon as he came back from a 1/3rd of a season injury he made the bench and had an impact. Nothing to do with him being the last choice.
Yeah marco's first year was also like an apprenticeship as such, where Ricki seemed to want him to put in the hard hours during that first year to prepare him for the following season.
Seems like he has wanted to do the same with Lindsay. I'm hoping he can be given that bench spot he deserves. He's looked good when I've seen him

Why not just sign Pele as marquee, and get Maradonna in on as injury cover mid season.

Mitch Cooper seems like one of those young kiwis EVERYONE on here has heard of but Ricki will ignore as if he never knew who it was.. reminds me of the millions of players Abris finds haha

I'd go out tomorrow and make Dan Keat and Michael Boxall good offers to come home. They're not on huge money over there and they're the type of aussie player that other A-League clubs are getting home. Maybe Henderson too but it does seem like his knee is wrecked unfortunately

I would agree with you - think Boxall could be a great pickup. Young, kiwi, and versatile (apparently).
Keat would also be a good pickup, but I feel like he's still got a lot to prove in the states- he's always had pretty big wraps and I'd stay there.

Boxall went into the expansion darft last year and his salary was published at $42,000. I presume that was US dollars, could have been canadian.

I have no problem Keat choosing to stay in the states. What I'm saying is that the club should be pursuing guys with their profile and getting them to make a decision. Talented, young, kiwis. If they choose to stay in the states and pursue a career there that's not a problem

VINCE LIA COMMITS HIMSELF TO THE PHOENIX
Vince Lias dream of playing for the All Whites could possibly be over, but that hasnt stopped him committing to the Wellington Phoenix for another two years.
A founder member of the Phoenix, Lia, confirmed today he had signed a two-year extension to his contract and is already looking forward to next season.
It was a pretty easy decision to be honest, Lia, 27, said.
With this group of players I feel there could be something special happening in the future.
Weve had a good season and feel we can do even better over the next couple (of seasons).
We have the nucleus of a strong squad and if we can just add a bit more quality and depth I honestly believe we can be a top two club.
As well as the playing side of things, the new ownership group has ensured there is stability off the field so there is no reason why quality players shouldnt want to come here.
I think this is going to be a very good football club.
After five years in Wellington Lia has applied to become a New Zealand citizen, hoping it would enable him to play for the All Whites.
That scenario is now in doubt with him having previously played for Australias under-20 and under-23 sides, but he hasnt given up all hope.
The main thing is to get a New Zealand passport and I havent heard how that is going lately, Lia said.
Fifa is on record as saying they will listen to each case individually so there is still a chance of it happening.
While that (playing for the All Whites) didnt come into it when I was making my decision, committing myself to New Zealand for another two years cant harm my cause.
If it happens then it is a bonus. The main thing is I am at the Phoenix for another two years and I am delighted about that.

Can't say I'm too excited about this. But I think he'll be a good squad player, assuming we actually do some business in the window this season.

Lia's re-signing; surprised - not in the least, disappointed - a bit, worried - very.
What I'm worried about is the prospect of another season of average football - our midfield last season, overall, played unattractive football and Lia was part of the problem - I don't see him being part of the solution. And before anyone jumps down my throat about us still getting to the play-offs playing unattractive football - yes results are very very important and that achievement was great BUT if the only thing that mattered was results no one would ever go to a game - we would all just check the score after the match.
I'm also worried about how good Herbert thinks Lia is - good enough to keep Smith out and consign Sanchez to the wing. What's the point of re-signing imports who are not considered good enough to displace Vince Lia ?
Maybe Lia would be a reasonable squad player if only that's how Herbert used him.
I love the irony of Lia talking about adding quality to the squad.
I live in hope we will sign some quality.................
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

Lia is OK. At his best last season he formed a pretty intense ball winning midfield with Muscat and Brown. He can pass the ball well at times, remember guys need to be making good runs as well. He can fill in at the back when needed as well. My only real concern is that Ricki seems to value him a little highly and possibly play him ahead of others when he shouldn't. But I'm OK with him in the squad.

i was more disappointed with 2 players starting in the midfield that dont like to pass short, no problem with either of them personally, just think only one of them should've been starting.
All season i would've preferred a starting midfield 2 of brown/smith or lia/smith. Ricki didn't want that, but now we could have it through necessity. Smith/Lia I am ok with, and Lia's ability to play a cross-field diagonal ball also seems to have helped us switch things quite well on occasion this season.
Every team needs an enforcer in the middle in the A-league, lia is ours, im happy to have him.
