Not sure this has been debated before but with Simon Elliot being dumped by Fulham...what is his future and any possibility of him signing for the Phoenix? Would we want him?
At 33 , plus coming off a bad injury I am not sure he will attract a lot of attention from EPL clubs. I suppose he might get some interest at Championship or Div 1 but it would be a long shot.
He's good enough still to play EPL if fully fit. Would add something to the Phoenix but our midfield is fairly overcrowded already. Can't see it happening personally.

Don't think we need himn to be honest. Mind you, I've probably been poisoned by the last "Released by Fulham after recovering from a bad injury" player we signed.
Maybe one of the newly promoted clubs, e.g. Hull, would be interested in him
Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Hull City Retirement Home is just about full I think!
Dean Windass
Nick Barmby
Jay Jay Okocha
And now they're talking about Campo!
Yeah unless we shed another midfielder I can't see it happening - possibly back to the MLS?

Local radio is reporting the Nix will announce the signing of a striker in the next few days. Tony P has said it's not Porter who has apparently yet to even talk to his club about his future. Tony has said the Nix will wait a while longer for the outcome of the Porter saga - I guess we can afford to do that if we have another good striker signed up.
The name being reported as the possible signing is Daniel McBreen - released by St Johnstone. The source isn't stated.
Here's the Wiki link for McBreen.
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

Here's some more McBreen stats.
In last 4 seasons has scored 24 goals in 52 starts - that's a pretty respectable ratio - particularly considering the level he was playing at. An Aussie to so he wouldn't use any of the 4 foreign player slots.

Its probably going to be McBreen....considering he is currently trialing at the club. Not a bad scoring record in Scotland so he could be useful. Saw him last Sunday in the |Phoenix preseason game. Hard to tell after just half a game but I must say I didn't notice him. He's quite big..1.85 and 80+kg so looks more like a holding target striker. Not sure if this fits in well as a style with Smeltz. All we can do is wait and watch.
The Porter saga is quite bizarre. You would think by now it would either yes or no!!!!
I mean if Hartepool want him and are legally able to keep him then its all over...YES? Well apparantly not yet! So again its wait and watch.

Got it now!
Well taken goal at a very high level. If it is McBreen coming then he could be more than useful. Considering how well Smeltz did last year coming form Conference level in the UK then McBreen could do OK in the A-League.

McBreen looks a big physical Centre forward type player. He should handle the physical nature of the A-League OK. He's probably more of a target man...a holding player without a lot of pace who holds up the ball and knocks in the crosses.
How well he fits in depends on the style of play that the Phoenix use. If Daniel, Bertos and Gao can pump in lots of accurate crosses then he could be useful. How him and Smeltz combine is a bit more of a question. They are kind of similar in styles....I kind of thought after last season that Smeltz would profit from a fast nippy frontman to play along side. Having two targetmen up front is a bit one dimensional though Smeltz may like having someone like McBreen beside him to take some of the heat. The problem with having two targetmen up front is there is always the temptation to play the long ball game....which is as exciting as bat shiite!!!!!!
I suspect he may be the no3 striker...sort of a longer term replacement for Coveny who must be in his last year. Tony P hinted that they had TWO strikers to sign...watch this space.

As I said elsewhere, he doesn't look as good as Brownlie. I reckon we'd be better gettiing Brownlie if we are seriously considering McBreen.

Sounds Like Neil Emblen would be better ...
LeiLei Gao beats the fullback, and crosses, Emblen leaps up like a salmon, chests it down, twists, lays it off to Smeltzy who buries it (this is a direct quote from a commentary of a Nix game if Embers is signed instead of McBreen)

Yeah I don't think Brownlie should've been released.

Did you forget to put on of these
after that statement. You must be kidding right. I watched Brownlie through the warm up games and alot at training during the season. I could see not reason why they signed him in the first place as he clearly wasnt up to standard. I would prefer Cov's over him any day.

I wasnt to impressed with McBreen on Sunday but watching him a little closer last night I didnt think he was all that bad. He made some good runs off the ball, created space for others, and got into good positions.
On saying that there must be better out there. I would think that Cov's and Costa would rate as better than him so I cant really see the point of signing him.

We were looking to sign Porter who wasn't coming cheap. Money isn't a problem.
McBreen is an ex-British league Australian player who's agent has got him trials with various clubs. A trial doesn't necessarily mean anyone will actually sign him.

The key inference being that having to trial with clubs indicates he needs to prove himself. The fact he remains unsigned therefore infers that thus far, he hasn't.

well if we have money and mcbreen is the best we can do - we are in trouble
Exactly. It's been said before - there isn't exactly an over abundance of quality strikers around that are unemployed. If they are good then they are generally working, unless you can snap them up just out of contract such as Porter.
