WELLINGTON Phoenix boss Ricki Herbert will watch his team from the stands in the pre-season friendly with Brisbane Roar to let his assistants to take the reins.

First thing that popped into my head when I read that was that Herbert was training up his assistants to take over from him when he takes over at some no-hope club in Europe.

I hope I'm very much wrong and suspect I will be, but that's just what immediately came into mind.

At least we'll have Ricki for another year - whatever happens, he's done a lot for us.

Interesting quote from Ricki today in the Herald,

"Asked whether he enjoyed the dual Wellington Phoenix/All Whites coaching roles, Herbert said he was happy to do both but with some reservations.

"Hopefully I can stay [and continue in both jobs], but I'm only human," he said in an obvious reference to having to consider what may be more lucrative offers from elsewhere.

"There has been no real pressure from Terry but I have to concede that my head is not buried in the team [Phoenix] at the moment. We have agreed to get through the weekend and then make a call."

The club must also move quickly to sign three players by August 1 or face sanctions from the FFA.

"After the weekend when we can say whether I am staying or going that will be a priority. We have been given a list of players who are available and it is a case of going through that and coming up with those we want. It is unlikely any will come from New Zealand."

!. Is he going ?? from the Nix, or from his All Whites job?? Is Terry putting the pressure on him to just run the Nix

2. And if the new players wont come from NZ, why trial Lovemore, and who else is there apart from Magno, are we going to pick someone sight unseen??

Can think of a few more questions but that is enough

Whole article here

Kind of crap - I would prefer he stay with the nix than keep coaching the All Whites to be honest. The All Whites will have barely any games for 2 years..

By the sounds of that interview he's almost out the door already. I thought he'd at least stay for this year..valeo2010-07-10 18:00:43

Herbert obviously has to consider his options - fair enough - he has to think of his future and what is best for his family. He also owes Terry big time and strikes me as the sort of guy who will do the right thing by Terry. He clearly would also like to take the All Whites to the next WC.

My reading between the lines is; if he can continue to coach both the All Whites and the Nix then that is what he would prefer to do as long as the $s are reasonable compared to any other offers he may have.

Whatever he decides he needs to make the call soon - to be fair to Terry, the Nix players and the supporters.

Dura on radio after game today saying words to the effect that 3 or 4 "big" signings to be made soon.

That's consistent with Herbert's comments and sounds promising.

If he only manages the All Whites and not the Nix then he'd be unemployed for much of the year. edit: just read the article which mentions the role could be expanded to include high performance and therefore be full time.

It would be understandable after the World Cup if it took some time to get back into the swing of club things. Hope he doesn't make any rushed decisions.

Ricki needs to make a decision NOW. It is not fair on the players or the fans having all this uncertainty so close to the start of the season. And, waiting until now to do this when the season finished several months ago is not on IMO.

Yeah fair enough...although I think it's feasible that he was on the radar of some clubs by just getting NZ to the WC, and the Phoenix to the finals.

I'll change "not fair" to saying it's not ideal preperation for the new season, whether it's anyone's fault or not.

And that is a big $ deal overseas. I'd be very sad to see him go, but realistically, his kids are in their last year of secondary school, and its probably fair to say he is not a Wellingtonian at heart. He's had a great run of success for the Phoenix and the All Whites, but i fear the sticking point will not just be what NZF can afford, but also what the Phoenix can afford.

Just as long as it's not GCU, all the best Ricki.

PS: PLEASE STAY

Not necessarily - coaches in some markets have the job life expectancy of a gnat - win the league or you're gone.

A deal to coach the All Whites through to the next WC combined with an extension on his Nix contract may be equally or more attractive - the trade off may be $s for job security and the enticement of another WC.

Whatever his decision in fairness to all concerned he needs to make it sooner rather than later.

On the front page of the dom today, it says ricki is expected to confirm today he will continue with all whites & phoenix. Not on stuff as yet.

In short, it says there is a Press conference today with Ricki, NZF boss & Phoenix Boss all present, and while they have all been keeping mum, it is expected there will be new deals all round.

Stoked about that entirely.

'Losing' Ricki would be a true concern for the sport itself in New Zealand as no one else appears to have the raw passion that he does..

very humble guy by the looks of it. a 19 year old with a history. Wish him well in his career, whether in NZ or abroad and if he's good enough, maybe we'll see him in an AW's shirt in a few years. At the end of the day, NZ is a true melting pot, so why not!
