Have just been idly scanning the ins & outs page on the A-League site. I see that Charlie Miller and Ahmad Elrich are both "released".
Now that would be a midfield duo to give hope to many of us middle-aged pie-eating fans.
(If only because we knew the RoF would have fresh stock each week)

btw a quick fact, if Jade North signs Andrew Durrante and him will be reunited from there Newcastle days were they won a Championship together...good luck charm perhaps?
Remember the Nut Puncher was in the same team...

That idiot Miller was in the Scottish press the other week saying he wants to go to an SPL team as he reckons he can still cut it there since the standard is the same as the A-League...strangely enough, no moves for him have been forthcoming!

SPL as in Singapore? there's tasty food there, that's for sure!

As in Scotland, where Charlie has obviously over indulged in the many treats on offer there...

Chris James and Jared Smith would be great. Should be able to get them on the cheap and they both have a huge point to prove. It's a risk but could work out positive for all parties concerned.
Why take a risk

They'd both be cheap. And have potential. I'm all for having as many New Zealanders in the team as possible, but they have to be good first. If they don't become starting material atleast we haven't paid top dollar for them like Mulligan.
Or we could actually focus on recruiting high quality professional footballers who will improve our squad instead of throwing bones out to guys who have failed elsewhere (in James' case, everywhere).
I just don't know when we became the "kiwi footballers living the dream foundation". We're a serious professional outfit who wants to win the comp, not going round giving guys chances because they have a kiwi passport.
I bang on about Chris James a lot but what frustrates me is the constant mantra of he has potential. The fact that none of the 6 or 7 clubs he has played or trialled for, or any of the thousands of scouts in Europe seems to have spotted it doesn't seem to matter. People see Fulham Reserves, England Youth and think must be great. James Derbyshire, who played and failed at Miramar, was in the Man U reserves. So was Ben Colett at the Knights. It isn't a high standard, 10% of UK academy graduats are still playing professional football 2 years later.
These guys would be cheap because they are rubbish. Yet without watching them play people want them signed. Have a bit of ambition for the club!
This thread is very frustrating

I will say one thing. In Collett's defence he could well have been an A-League star (in fact he could have been a Premier League star) but he'd been destroyed earlier in his career and later won a court case for damages against the tackler and Boro.
Not saying you are wrong conceptually though.

If you've ever been to the UK and played indoor footy for your work team on a Tuesday night in Finsbury Park then at some point you've definitely encountered some numpty on the opposition who everybody's in awe of because "he once had a trial with [insert random EPL team name here]".
The obvious question is "so why the f**k is he playing for our stationary supplier against us then?".
To which the obvious answer is they give out trials like candy in the UK. It's a numbers game - trial 1,000 nobodies and you might find one who can hack it. It's no big deal.

My picks
Aussie=Jade North
All White= Moss. Rickie said we might need 3 keepers or they could tell Crowther to stay where he is.
sth American=Viera.....or wildcard, unknown
Asian= ??????
Funny how the Ifill/Greenacre address book of contacts in the UK has yielded nothing. OR are we about to sign a South American/Asian/Australian playing in the Championship who are so good that like Ifill they will be signed on reputation.
Would be happy with Jade North and someone with pedigree playing at a good level in the UK .That just leaves the Asian player which is really dissapointing as they all have been crap so far.

There was actually an interesting article in the Daily Mail (yes I know - hear me out) that makes the same point about UK academies. All Premier League and Championship clubs are supposed to have academies (I think there are around 48 at the moment) and are required to have teams in U14, 16 and 18. That means at a minimum in each age group there are about 15 or 16 at every academy when in reality only mabye 6 or 8 have the talent to go on to play first team football.
Some will go on to professional football elsewhere but many actually have no chance but because of the regulations clubs are required to keep them on so they can field sides in each age group. There is a valid argument that if teams don't have enough talent in an age group they don't have to field a team in that age group - Arsene Wenger is big on this, the best players need to be playing and training with and against the best every day, not against 6 kids who they are far better than.
It's hard on the kids as well because they are the ones missing out on education, and growing up looking for a dream that they don't really have a chance at.
HN - agree to a point on Collett but there were eyebrows raised at that decision here because some people felt he didn't have it, he was very small. Whoever signed him though needs a bullet because that injury was well known.

If players in England are evaluated on that basis, no wonder they're struggling to regularly produce quality players.

Just nit picking but pretty sure James did very well in Finland until injury. Had a full season where he was a stand out.

Just going to put this one out there.
Stephen Appiah?
Unattached to a club at the moment. Has had injury problems in the last few seasons but was able to take part in the WC for Ghana. With the less games in the A League and longer off season he should cope with the work load and could be rejuvenated like Ifill. Would cover CB or CM for us, probably first choice in each position. Prefers to play a bit deep in midfield to be an attacking mid option for us. Still 29.

And we could sign him on a 21 year contract!

im surprised no one is talking much about fallon? Have i missed something?
Im not too up with the play on all this but his club just got relegated and it was pretty clear he was hoping to re-sign with someone else in the championship. His world cup wasnt flash and it seems no one has come calling...
he obviously loves playing in wellington and has a great relationship with ricki...
nz'er: tick
all white: tick
currently contracted to another club: tick
probable first eleven player: tick
he'd probably command decent wages relative to the a-league but you'd think plymouth could be keen to get his wages off their books now they're in league one?
anyhow, as stated above, im not completely up with the play so there might be something obvious i've overlooked... please inform me if that's the case...

He made comments about wanting to play/thinking he was good enough for the EPL so I think he might see us as too much of a step down. Still a possibility though

he certainly is an optimistic chap
to me it seems that he desperately wants to be loved by fans, in front of huge crowds. He got that at wellington, in front of the yellow fever, i think there's a chance if ricki is persistent and there's nothing else forth coming...

His ego is too big and I think his wife is English
It's tough - in one sense, Fallon rules for the goal he scored against Bahrain, on the other hand he seems like a bit of a cock and isn't that good

Yeah - and he seemed alright in SA when he stayed behind to give out training gear to kids etc. and was the last one on the plane.
I think it's just the God thing.

I think he has a strong belief in his ability and his potential, something you need to be a proffessional footballer. It just so happens that sometimes he doesn't engage his brain before he speaks and comes off somewhat arrogant.
