We missed the playoffs because we wern't good enough- Right across the park....

Our defense - based on an objective analysis of GA was plenty good enough.

Our defensive midfield was good enough - especially once McKain hit his straps.

Attacking midfield - not up to required standard - cue Diego and, hopefully, Fred - even if for another guest appearance.

GF was the problem.

Agree- but you'd think that the goals that we were expecting from Smeltz would be coming from a wider variety of sources now.

And you wouldn't sign Krishna or Corralles expecting them to be starting from the first game...

I think that even if we do sign both of the UK based strikers, we still need a striker or two in reserve as Costa aside there is no strikers at all in the team (and before you mention Draper), I have a feeling that he is going to be let go.

You miss the point - I don't think anyone is suggesting English players are automatically better but; which would you prefer as your starting strikers for next season;

A. Two players with a proven scoring record in English League 1.

B. Krisna and Corrales.

Think carefully - the season will depend on getting the "right" striking partnership - we missed the playoffs last year because we didn't score enough goals.

My vote is A with the better of Krisna or Corrales joining the squad if they show they are good enough in the trial.

I would prefer the first option but don't know if its gonna be avaliable

I think the Options are:

A. Two players who may be proven goalscorers in League 1 but obviously not in high enough demand over there, unless they are shunning other clubs for the Kiwi Lifestyle

B. Two proven Goalscorers in the NZFC and one at International level.

I'm hoping that these English guys will be proven goalscorers but still scoring them now. Don't know how easy we will attract the goalscorers. The nix management really need to play the Lifestyle card.

I had that feeling a few months ago too. Maybe Kwasnik too?

lack of goals contributed greatly to missing a playoff spot, however my gut feeling is that instead of playing brown and mckain as defensive midfielders we look at the option of a holding central midfielder, someone who is available for the pass and is confident of holding the ball prior to distribution...we lost of ball through the midfield last year

agreed,

I havent seen neither players play due to sky not broadcasting the games and lack of videos, as Im from timaru. however what i have heard both are pretty handy players. take a gamble ricky and tony. its wrth a go. siggy made the jump and he was my favourite player last season. they would be a hell of a lot cheaper. it doesnt mean they have to start every game but it gives supprt for a couple of english players and costa. having them plus some english imports and taken iin mind that costa's prefferd position is in the mid field I believe that it would'nt be a bad strike force.

I have to admit I am getting a slight feeling of doubt about those English strikers, even though all the evidence points the other way....

One of the Sundays quoted Tony mentioning 1 English striker. If not a misquote, a long way off the 3. Suspect we'll have our 1 English striker and the other 2 imports will be Krishna and Corrales. Add Costa and it might not be too bad, at least as good as previous seasons but not as good as many are hoping for obviously.

God I hope you are wrong - last season we were the second lowest scoring team in the league - by a long way.

Not delivering on 2 proven strikers would be just not good enough - if we can't recruit to the standard of Melbourne, Adelaide and, I hate to say it, Gold Coast we will be just making up numbers.

I sicerely hope this quote is wrong as already stated we were one of the poorest finishing teams last year and need to be better this year as I fear crowds will be below 6000 if we cannot score goals and certainly looking at other sides  we have to at least match them

I agree Whitby Boy.  There needs to be a quantum leap in the quality of the squad from last season - at least two proven, quality strikers (and in my view they won't come from the NZFC), another good attacking midfielder/playmaker, and a quality goalkeeper.  Also, if at all possible, we need to find a really good marquee player.  Otherwise the Phoenix simply aren't going to have the necessary entertainment factor (and the club is in the entertainment business) and aren't going to produce results, which will all mean crowd numbers are going to keep falling and we will quickly head the way of the Knights.  I don't feel confident that the Phoenix are doing enough to really turn things around to be a serious force in the A-League.  I hope I'm wrong and that Terry S, Tony P and Ricki pleasantly surprise us, however, Tony P now seems to be commenting on the likelihood of obtaining only one English striker and the Brazil scouting mission seems to have gone off the radar screen.  It would be disappointing if the Phoenix simply repeat the mistakes of the Kingz and the Knights and show the Australians that we're simply not up to that task of holding a place in a professional football league.

the Phoenix are light years ahead of the Knights organisationally.
There is still a massive emphasis on defenders. Fair enough. Forward play still seems to be an occasional practice. Oddly the Knights seemed better at set pieces and corners. The Phoenix are simply better technically and at position play.

I wasn't comparing the Knights and the Phoenix in terms of which side would win on the field Edward 1.  My point is that it would be disappointing if the Phoenix experience the same fate as the Knights, which, in my view, is a likelihood if we don't seriously improve the squad from last season.  Also, the A-League is a much improved competition on the previous Aussie leagues and the Aussie clubs are going to get better and better.  There's a big risk that the Phoenix won't keep up - in terms of crowd support or playing ability -  unless they really crank things up in terms of improving the quality of the playing squad.  And, being isolated in NZ, where football is less well supported, and not being allowed to field a youth team like the other clubs, means we have to put in even more effort to keep up with the other clubs.

I think you're right in that sense, amxfc.  Being good enough isn't good enough.  Constant development and improvement is now normal and we need to improve on each season.
The economists call it "strategic drift", like Aussie and New Zealand being roughly the same standard of living 30 years ago, but frankly we are not that similar any more.

Its the difference between personal bests and champions.
Personal bests give me a warm fuzzy but what we need are champions.

Attitude.
In the 1980s we never said Australia is bigger and is therefore better.
We were great at cricket, won the world cup rugby and fought our way to THE world cup.
So yeah, I like the attitude of champions and not second bests.
