I hope Jeffers is not on the wish list (very doubtful prospect for the target-man role anyway). He's injury prone, stroppy and has a history of getting sent off or carded for being a prick and his goals have dried up. I'd rather see one of our home-grown lads given a run alongside Greenacre to be honest.

Jeffers has had so many clubs that he'd bring supporters of almost every club in English football.

Francis Jeffers is a git.  One of the few Arsenal players I've disliked (along with Keown, Parlour, and Aliadiere who I eventually warmed to).

A quick Google search shows the source of this rumour as being: http://www.football-rumours.co.uk/

Doesn't look particularly reliable, so no reason to panic yet!

I had a look at that sight  and they also said Mark Viduka was going to Queensland Roar on a free transfer

Yeah right

Having him would mean Costa might get game time. Jeffers would be either suspended, injured or falling out with someone

Would love to know who the second striker was that they were targeting. Guess we will never know.
Signing a second striker is absolute highest priority now....there is no way we can go into this season with only Greenie as our sole striker. he will score for us but a second striker of equal if not better pedigree is a must.
I wonder if Tony P had a plan C and D. They originally went to the UK with 2 guys lined up....did they have a third or fourth choice?
Time will tell.

How could you have disliked keown and parlour??? Loved those guys to bits! Ray was especially awesome for us when paddy was injured in 03/04. Dont reckon we would've completed the unbeaten prem without the guy. He was immense. Captained the side and bossed that midfield when we beat inter 5-1 at the san siro that year too.

Both legendary gunners, loved them.

Aliadiere however... didn't do f*ck all for us when given the opportunity yet somehow managed to score two stunners against us in the last 2 years...

PS better add a bit to the topic... jeffers is a muppet, hope he never touches our shores.

just reading one of the articles on the front page it said

"the search continues for another two strikers. One of those is likely to be either Roy Krishna or Luis Corrales, the NZFC players who will basically go head-to-head in a week-long trial next month, the other will come from overseas, ideally in the target-man mould of player."

just wondering if people would be satisfied with one of them making the step up; whos most likey etc.

if Krishna can improve during his month with the Nix and show he has the goods/potential I think it would be a good move to offer him a contract

Keown was a blundering gump who looked like a Brontosaurus who managed to snatch a draw from the jaws of victory against Bolton (ended 2-2) when we desperately needed the three points.  And Ray Parlour was just a plain old derald.  Although I must say I laughed when I saw him being interviewed whilst playing golf and he had the highest laugh you'll ever hear.

Ray Parlour was a saint. He's definitely a highlight on some of me gooner dvds, an absolute laugh, as is lee dixon. Those two cracked me up, a right pair of larrikins.

And as i said before, the romford pele was legendary despite being rather old in 03/04. Not to mention a few seasons before that... 11-12 year arsenal career was it?

PS agreed that krishna wouldn't be a bad option to take for the nix, got some talent that boy - im still on topic... just?

Get more on: aleague | wellington | phoenix
WELLINGTON Phoenix have not finished their hunt for goal-power but fans should not expect a big-name marquee forward to roll into town.

The New Zealanders added Tranmere Rovers striker Chris Greenacre to their ranks on a two-year deal yesterday and the club is now anxious for a target man to assist him.

However, that doesn't mean the club will break the bank in order to land such a player. Phoenix CEO Tony Pignata told the Dominion Post: "It won't be a marquee signing, it's imperative we can get someone who can sit inside the salary cap.

"The European season finishes soon so that opens up an opportunity, but we just want to take our time and make sure we get the right person."

Another forward from the English leagues is a possibility. Both Pignata and Ricki Herbert have already shown they have studied what is on offer at that level having landed Greenacre and tried (and failed) to land Gold Coast United-bound Joel Porter 12 months ago.

Shane Smeltz was also recruited from English football, having performed for the likes of AFC Wimbledon and Halifax Town before being signed by Phoenix.

Whilst financial realities (salary cap and budget) probably preclude signing a marquee striker anyway it doesn't worry me at all that the 2nd striker will need to fit within the cap - I'm sure Tony has left sufficient "cap room" to get the calibre of striker we need. With a 2nd striker of  League 1 calibre, but not necessarily from League 1, I think we will have a very nicely balanced side.

I'm also reasonably comfortable with Tony and Ricki taking their time to get a quality player that will be a good fit with the team culture but signing a 2nd striker needs to be priorities 1, 2, 3 and 4 - which I'm sure it is.

I agree, I think that is one of the reasons why we only have 17 players on our books and have not yet renewed Plodder's contract. They are using the money for players we desperately need first, and if there is some spare change after, they will make us of it on the rest of the squad.

So, do you guys think we are after our 'plan B' now, with Corrales and/or Krishna being plan C?
Someone got it right with Greenacre..so who's going to be our next striker?

I'd personally like to see another striker who isn't from the English league. Maybe a south American as planned originally? Just get scared that we are moving back to the knights / kingz by signing English has beens. I'm very happy that we've got greenie though, just not too sure if I want two strikers from league 1.

Krishna and corrales are actually a good idea for me because I'm sure they will be relatively cheap to pay and I think they could end up being at a league standard. I'm glad we are getting all the big signings now and trying to get it in the cap
But why not offer marquee status to a striker if the right one came about?this makes me wonder if tp has got someone in mind? Perhaps more of the hopeful fred dreams but what if there is something else we havn't caught onto yet? I hope so

Why is there an assumption that players from Sth America aren't "has beens"?  Those leagues are well picked over...it's so pointless saying we should select players from certain countries.  What we are looking for is a certain type of player, nationality is meaningless, what matters is ability.

From the SMH...
Brisbane Roar striker Sergio van Dijk has been linked to a move to Indonesia following the club's recent financial woes, with reigning champions Sriwijaya FC and perennial challengers Pelita Jaya believed to be interested in his services.

Dutch-born van Dijk has Indonesian heritage, and has previously expressed interest in playing for the Indonesian national team. Indonesian citizenship laws make that scenario unlikely, although it's believed van Dijk will get a chance to impress national coach Benny Dollo if, as expected, he is called up to play for the Indonesian All-Stars against Manchester United in Jakarta on July 20. The All-Stars team, curiously, will be picked by an SMS poll among the fans.

Meanwhile, Indonesian international T.A. Musafry might be heading in the opposite direction, with Wellington Phoenix considering a bid for the Persiba Balikpapan striker.

Can't find a thing about our man T.A Musafry.  But if van dyk is available he would fit the "target man" role nicely, he's a good player.

TA stands for Talaohu Abdul. He's 27, has been with Persiba since 2006 and has scored 20 goals in 56 games with them. He has two caps with the Indonesian national team.

Well, not much of that Wiki article was in English - but I'm guessing "Tinngi" means height, and 165cm (5'5") seems a little short for a target man.

Still 20 goals in 56 games and two international caps does hint at quality - and good on the club for looking at players in Indonesia.
