Do you have to have 23 players in the squad during the entire season or just at the start? i.e. what if one drops out? I suppose Paston is still counted anyway.

No. You need 20 at the start of the season, not sure about during the season. So we are sweet.

No seriously, Daniel can deliver a great ball. Almost as good and Lochy, but not quite.

Just a wee stat for you....if you count last season's Pre-Season Cup clash between these two sides, the Phoenix haven't conceded a goal against CCM in their last five meetings.

In stating this stat I'll invoke the Reverse Jinx!

Has the squad to fly out been announced yet?

I dreamed we won 2-1 even though one of our goals was disallowed. Gogo dream.

Daniel is a big loss for mine. I know he has been a bit off lately but Caceres is always crap when he starts and it will be the same again - especially against a coach who knows him inside out. Also means we have less impact coming off the bench late in the game.

Muscat as a holding midfielder sounds crazy..

Whats the story with Manny playing defensive midfield, surely if Hearfield keeps his place at RB Manny will have to be on the bench?  The Nix are lacking an impact player, maybe Diego might get a chance to step up, geez i hope they don't turn up in gosford stil in xmas mode, really looking forward to this 1 but must admit feeling a bit nervous, it would be bloody fantastic if we could finnish the year on a high, and hopefully we can all start the new year looking like and not like not much to ask for is it?

Yeah i thought the same. Why manny at DM? Surely if you want brown and lia to push forward, you could just do so with another player (who actually plays the position) there...its not like you have to have manny in DM for lia and brown to play a more forward role.

Will see how it works out i guess!

Allegedly

Exactly, which is why I'd reluctantly start Diego and drag him for Caceres later in the game

you'd have to put manny back at RB if he was able to start ie not stll suspended, daniel is a big loss as he always gets marked pretty heavily which creates space. No greenacre, so I'd expect costa to start, perhaps Hearfield can play in Daniels place if manny is back.

As reported on Radio Sport yesterday...

Hearfield is playing at right-back.

Manny is playing DM

Caceres in for Daniel

Costa out of the XI, leaving Ifill up top.

I'm glad Herbert is trying something different - same old same old hasn't been working.

Hearfield offers more than Manny going forward so I can see the sense in starting him at right back. I'm assuming Manny will play alongside Lia so Brown can push further forward - he's no more a natural AM than Manny is a natural DM but he can score which is what we need given we need to start winning games.

I also agree with Caceres ahead of Diego - Caceres will have a go and can beat players - I know he has been better off the bench - the challenge is for him to show the same off the bench form from the start.

I like the attacking mind set of the starting 11 - especially as the Mariners are weakened at the back with suspension and non availability due to international duty.

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

trouble is we know that one at the front doesn't work either, two up front has been working - our finishing hasn't. Even with a weakened defence CCM will be able to cover Ifill easily, cAceras is going to have to be aggressive on attack and allow Ifill some time otherwise we are sunk!

maybe this is what Ricki is looking at doing

                   Reddy
Hearfield Dura Mckain Lochy

               Manny Lia

Bertos         Brown      Caceres

                     Ifill

I'd almost be inclined to swap Ifill and Caceres.  that could be something different that might work!!

guys lets be honest. Daniel being out the team this week is good for us. He has been sh*t lately. He has no pace at all and can not head the ball to save himself (although he has been getting better this season)

Caceres has pace and backs himself to take on players. He uses both feet and has a powerful boot. He will also be on a "high" after his performance last week.

I am predicting a 1-0 win to us.

All i can say is WTF.  so now we have four backs and 3 DMs on the park. All well for lia and brown to get in scoring positions but neither can finish. would rather see hearfield up the park than watch lia peppering row F all night.caceres for daniel is lazy for lazy so no loss. ifill up front by himself yet again will be a disaster like every other time. The guy hates long hoofballs and never wins anything. Hes our best player, surely he should play where he wants. Id take a half lame greenacre up front right now. Not expecting a happy new year out of this bringbacksmeltz2009-12-30 11:00:06

Why not put Bertos in the middle up front, and let Ifill work his magic and feed the ball to him. Bertos has the speed needed, and forcing him to get in the middle just may be what we need to bring him back to the start of season form he showed

Yes he can. At least Daniel has learned how to track back and tackle. Caceres is allergic to it.

Still think Manny at DM is crazy talk.

Given the importance of this game  Caceres will hopefully show up for 90min. He helped in the last game when he came on. So he deserves to start. darkhorse2009-12-30 11:38:54

Has Ricki not learnt from when he tried to make Karl Dodd a DM. Troy has been great at right back but I think we should be playing players in their specialised postions.

Agreed. Thought that Hearfield would be put into midfield and Muscat at RB.

The line up isn't ideal but the reality, IMHO, is; Greenacre is out, Costa isn't up to starting, Daniel has been poor for ........ (fill in your own view), Diego has been AWOL the entire season,  Leo is far better out wide than through the middle, Brown, although he is a poor finisher does finish some, Caceres deserves a start and we need to win,.

I also suspect Manny has been asked to do a marking job - with Lia, McKain and Durante directing him he should be fine. Don't forget both Lia and Brown are a card away from a suspension so, in all probability, we will need someone to fill in at DM over the next few weeks anyway - your other option is Ferrante (I guess McKain could also be alsked to play DM although he is clearly unhappy playing there and is much better at CB).

Until Greeny returns it makes sense to me to push Brown forward.

I'm happy Herbert is trying something different.
