More like- if we lose I think Weta should give everyone who wants it a free Hobbit/Nix shirt to walk around in...I like the idea of a combined shirt. I don't like the idea of the players playing in it.

I can't wait to see this one off Hobbit shirt. I know some people are pretty annoyed about it but I think it'll look cool. Go Nix!

I don't actually care if it looks cool, or if it looks stupid.

I think that since it is a one off, and it is not going to be sold, then even if it looks stupid (say in many people's opinion) then we can just put up with it.

It's something that gets the club money, which is a good thing (admittedly, to a point). I want the club to be financially in a good place. This (presumably) helps. It's not impinging on my perception of the club brand or identity for anything other than a one off game, so bring it on I say.

Is it bringing the club money or is it just a promotion?

lol, Ernie has a great sense of humour, one that needs to be seen more. Duro going for the  Maroon and Green though? Funny clip that you should check out.

So these shirts will not be sold at all? Even after the release of the film? Maybe they have film spoilers on the inside of them. :P

Looking forward to it. Be mine and my partner's first Phoenix game outside of Wellington. We weren't originally planning to go but since we now have season tickets and I had enough airpoints to cover both us one way, plus we have parents to stay with for free there didn't seem to be any reason not to go!

My brother who lives in Auckland has decided to go away for the weekend with his other half though which is a shame as was hoping to get him along to his first Phoenix game too.

Thanks. Haha an away trip would be good but the finances may not stretch to as many as you go to! Have promised the other half that we will definitely go if the Phoenix make the final this season!

Latest press quote from Domey  "Eden Park is an expensive place from us to come to. Unless we get Aucklanders showing up and supporting us it will be questioned whether we come back or look at alternative venues"

LOL......Domey mate, love your work but please give this argument a rest. Never in the history of event marketing has anyone bought a ticket because the promoter has high venue expenses. People don't give a shiite..they go for multiple reasons that have nothing to with the promoters bottom line. Threatening customers is BAD MARKETING.  Imagine a restauranter saying "if people don't come and eat at my restaurant I will take it somewhere else. LOL

So where exactly is Domey going to take his team if Aucklanders don't come?????? I hear there are some paddocks on the Chatham islands that could be OK for a football match. Can see the press release now..."its cost us big time to come here....if Chatham islanders don't show up...blah blah blah..."

The problem with what Domey has just done is that he has shifted the media narrative to the crowd numbers. The Nix could blitz the Mariners next weekend but you watch.....the media will be fixated not on the Nix's performance.....the story will be "good Nix game but where were all the people????"

Football in NZ always does this....why? Crowd numbers, bottom line is back room stuff......just promote the football match FFS

Permalink Permalink

Good post Austin. Completely agree. Dome needs to give himself an uppercut and fudge up about crowds, especially in Auckland where it has never disappointed.

A smarter CEO would extol how the team is playing and all the positives. Instead, he cried wolf, yet again.

Grumpy old bastard alert

It is a valid argument, but it has been trotted out so many times now that it wears thin with the punters and diverts media attention as austin10 succinctly points out.

Is there any reason why the Tron has never been considered?

Did we not play there in 2010-ish against the Roar? i remember one of their players saying it was boring.

2010-ish was Ring of Dirt against Bling no?

Other than that it has been Dunners (pre-season and one in-season), ChCh and Orcland, and recently Napier.

Can't recall Tron (but then who can?).

Preseason one year. 1-1 with Roar. Think D-Mac got our goal.

Every place they have gone to so far (except Auckland) has had someone else underwrite the event. Therefore making it zero risk. Auckland probably doesn't need it because of the population size. I'd guess no one in Hamilton is willing to do it. They tried to get Hamilton to cover one of the games during the CWC but it was booked out for Super Rugby.

Quite possibly true!

I definitely recall some Orcland people commenting about how they needed a good showing otherwise the Nix (and possibly All Whites) wouldn't be back at least one of the matches up there (I think we played Adelaide).

I take all that....but he did also say all of this. Isn't that promoting the football match?

“Ernie has really got the team humming playing some really exciting football that is making many across the Tasman sit up and take note of the quiet revolution that it taking place over here.

“Nathan Burns has gone to the top of the golden boot race with eight goals, Roy Krishna is showing the potential that Ernie saw in him when we played him pre-season two years ago and Albert Riera is widely regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders in the A-League.

“Add into the mix Roly Bonevacia who some are now trumpeting as the best import in the A-League this season, Michael McGlinchey who regularly is included in A-League teams of the week and stalwarts in Moss, Durante and Sigmund and you’ve got a pretty potent line up.

“Over the last couple of weeks the number of phone calls from Australian media asking about what Ernie is doing over here has gone through the roof.

“The message they are reporting is that there is quiet revolution taking place over here and that the Phoenix are fast becoming the entertainers of the A-League – that’s a direct quote from a Sydney Morning Herald article.”

Adding to this the fact that the Phoenix have never lost at Eden Park, then there is a lot for Aucklanders to look forward to in the clash.

we'll see which of those two statements get the most media time. I'm guessing it'll be the more negative aspect about crowds. Should just stick to talking up the game.
